Goblin Emperor
Goblin Emperor | Katherine Addison
The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir.Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favor with the naive new emperor, and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages, and the specter of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor. All the while, he is alone, and trying to find even a single friend . . . and hoping for the possibility of romance, yet also vigilant against the unseen enemies that threaten him, lest he lose his throne or his life. Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor is an exciting fantasy novel, set against the pageantry and color of a fascinating, unique world, is a memorable debut for a great new talent."

This took WAY longer to finish than I initially planned. This book has been such a fun ride, it's true I was very hesitant at first about liking this but I ended up loving it through and through. The court intrigue was immaculate and Maia was such a likable protagonist that although not educated in the nuanced details of court he wasn't completely clueless and didn't let his courtiers influence his decision-making.

Doppoetry The big reveal felt a bit flat, in the grand scheme of things. Some in-world racism felt like it stunted the general vibe and setting. I would also have liked to learn more about general worldbuilding, and not just court life. (Maybe more of that in later books?) overall I had a lot of fun being immersed in this book and am looking forward to the other ones in the series. 5mo

4 ⭐This book is a soft DNF. On a day when I couldn‘t find an audiobook that fit this one did. This is an extremely long audiobook over 20 hours, and I did listen to approximately three. This story is about the offspring of a king, who has no chance of ever sitting on the throne and has been in isolation on the outskirts of the kingdom. They receive news that their father and all the older brothers have died which means they are now the monarch.

LibrarianRyan All of that was very interesting and kept my attention. However, in listening to this audiobook the number of times they repeat the word “serenity” is annoying. I gather that this is a greeting both in welcoming and in leaving kind of like aloha, but it‘s just odd. I can‘t tell if this is a mistake, or purposeful. It is done so often it could almost become a drinking game. I was at the stage of the story when the main character is told they must 7mo
LibrarianRyan take a wife to keep their nephews and younger siblings from killing them to take over the throne, that I stopped the audiobook and never went back. I was thoroughly enjoying this book, that I will probably read it in print because the story was good, but the narration was annoying. 7mo

First #auldlangspine title finished from @Karisimo ‘s list & I loved it.

Maia is thrown into court life when he is crowned emperor after the unexpected death of his father & half-brothers. Having grown up in exile with only an abusive caretaker, he knows nothing of life at court or how to rule. I very much enjoyed watching him find his way, create friends & learn to deal with bullies & enemies. This one felt cozy-adjacent to me.

4.5 ⭐️

Karisimo So glad you enjoyed it- i like that description “cozy adjacent”! 10mo

Started my first #auldlangspine read this afternoon. 84 pages in already and I can tell this is going to be a good one!

Maia‘s youthful naïveté is so far endearing as he is thrown into court politics and formality. I‘m very curious to see how he handles it, the friends he continues to make and where it all goes.

So far, it reminds me a little of The Queen of the Tearling which I loved.

@Karisimo your picks are off to a great start!

I liked this. Maia is a precious angel of a character that is easy to love. Though this is a high fantasy, it is also in essence a mystery. Once you get used to the language, it was very fun to follow the clues along with his growing collection of alliances. I do recommend the audiobook, it is well done and helps a great deal telling characters apart. 4⭐️

I really liked this fantasy about a half elf half goblin who unexpectedly finds he has inherited his father‘s throne, making him emperor. It‘s unexpected because he‘s the 4th son, but his father and 3 older brothers all die in the same air ship crash.

Heavy in politics and court intrigue, I‘ve heard this called cozy but I don‘t think I‘d call it that, as there are some heavy scenes. I thought the MC was complex. 👍

It makes me really, really happy that my local bookstore always keeps Katherine Addison in stock. It makes me less happy to see that mass market paperbacks now cost $14.99, while trade paperbacks are $26.99. 😔

This book was amazing! The author manages to make political intrigue interesting by really focusing on the dry politics of decision making. I‘ve never read a book like this one.
Maia becomes emperor under tragic circumstances, but as he navigates the complex politics of his role, he starts to see positive changes he can make and works to improve life for people around him while dodging attempts on his life and crown.

Loved this one! Maia was so likable, naive yet wise. As someone else said- it‘s rare to find a fantasy without an epic quest/battle/action. This story was limited to court intrigue and politics, but wasn‘t boring at all! Props to the author for accomplishing that! Also thanks to @BarbaraJean and @monalyisha because this was loosely an #AuldLangSpine pic. BarbaraJean recommended The Grief of Stones so I went back to the beginning for this one!

Don‘t go into this book expecting bountiful action and epic battles. There is some court intrigue but ultimately it is a riveting but gentle book, with an awkward, flawed, and completely likeable half-goblin fourth son who so happens to find himself now Emperor. A coming of age epic fantasy.

It‘s been a while since I read any high fantasy, and I forgot how engrossing it could be when well done. This one has stellar world building, an intricate plot, and a very sympathetic MC in Maia, who manages the maze of his life with pluck and grace. One of those books that you look for a sequel for, and are dispatched you don‘t find one…

shanaqui I love the Goblin Emperor! I've not listened to the audio, but it's the kind of book that flies by for me. If you have access to the physical copy you might want to keep it to hand, though, for the glossary/Dramatis personae; there's a lot of playing around with language, making names and titles potentially confusing! 3y

I listened to this audiobook & winced, often. There were many odd names & lineages & associations & positions held & dates that at times, I just zoned out & said to myself “I guess this (named action) happened because of some weird named guy, I hope I don't need to remember who they are later on“. & remember I did not. I'm enacting Pearl's Rule of 50. 50 minutes of audiobook instead of 50 pages but you get the gist. This is a DNF for me

I feel really disconnected from everyone and everything right now -- here, Pillowfort, Dreamwidth, Twitter; just about everywhere I hang out. Part of it is that I'm playing a ton of Final Fantasy XIV, and I have a community there that I'm hanging out with. But part of it is that I'm not reading much fiction and bouncing off everything. Maybe rereading this favourite will help!

How are all of you doing? First comment is a little update of my own.

shanaqui Personally: this year I got diagnosed with PTSD after years of being told it was GAD. I had a reprocessing therapy (EMDR) which resulted in some of the worst flashbacks I've ever had... but helped a lot in the longer run.

I'm studying again, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Still waiting for my exam results from the first year... but did well so far.

I still work for Beeminder and Postcrossing, but I'm leaving Habitica!

This was unexpected for a fantasy. The entire 450 page plot is about the nitty-gritty of governance. The titular character spends all their time...going to meetings. Hearing proposals. Making compromises. Reading petitions. As a lover of political stories, I was intrigued & invested, especially when it was paired with really lovely, intricate world-building. But I sometimes wished there was a more active plot, & a little bit more romance. ★★★☆☆.
