The Lewis Man
The Lewis Man: The Lewis Trilogy | Peter May
48 posts | 59 read | 24 to read
Marilyn Stasio in The New York Times raved: "Peter May is a writer I'd follow to the ends of the earth." Among the many honors received, The Blackhouse, the first novel in May's acclaimed Lewis trilogy, won the Barry and Crime Thriller Hound awards. In The Lewis Man, the second book of the trilogy, Fin Macleod has returned to the Isle of Lewis, the storm-tossed, wind-scoured outer Hebridean island where he was born and raised. Having left behind his adult life in Edinburgh--including his wife and his career in the police force--the former Detective Inspector is intent on repairing past relationships and restoring his parents' derelict cottage. His plans are interrupted when an unidentified corpse is recovered from a Lewis peat bog. The only clue to its identity is a DNA match to a local farmer, the now-senile Tormod Macdonald--the father of Fin's childhood sweetheart, Marsaili--a man who has claimed throughout his life to be an only child, practically an orphan. Reluctantly drawn into the investigation, Fin uncovers deep family secrets even as he draws closer to the killer who wishes to keep them hidden. Already an international bestseller and winner of numerous awards, including France's Prix des Lecteurs du Telegramme, The Lewis Man has the lyrical verve of Ian Rankin and the gutsy risk-taking of Benjamin Black. As fascinating and forbidding as the Hebridean landscape, the book (according to The Times) "throbs with past and present passions, jealousies, suspicions and regrets; the emotional secrets of the bleak island are even deeper than its peat bog."

#TheLewisMan #PeterMay #August2024 #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024

The best features of this book were Peter May's beautiful writing and his description which made you feel like you were right there on the island witnessing everything that was happening. Also, I found the island and the people very interesting. It was a brilliant story with just enough mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. read 1/5/15

EadieB I have re-read The Lewis Man by Peter May from 1/5/15 and found out that I have forgotten most of what I read 9-1/2 years ago. It was all about Marsali's father and his dementia. I'm glad I re-read it and will now re-read The Chessmen. I'm getting ready to read book 4 when it will be published in September and I will be better prepared since I have re-read these 3 books. 8/9/24 4mo

2nd book in the Lewis trilogy and loving it. Have the 3rd on my night stand, will pick up the 1st tomorrow from the library. Love books that take place in other countries especially Ireland, and Scotland. This trilogy takes place in the Outer Herbrides of which I am interested in reading about.

Finished, picked up The Black House from library today and looking forward starting it. Too bad there are only 3 books in the Lewis series.

The 2nd in this trilogy is again set in the Outer Herbrides Islands of the coast of Scotland. Fin MacLeod has returned from Edinburgh, where he has left his police life behind. A body is found in a bog on Lewis during turf cutting and found to be related to a local elderly man suffering from dementia. Only that man was believed to have no family. Thus sets off this well-crafted, atmospheric mystery. It has a strong sense of place in the Hebridean islands of Scotland. I really enjoyed it.

squirrelbrain It‘s part of a trilogy isn‘t it? (Hubby loves Peter May books) 1y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Yes, it‘s actually book 2 and I haven‘t read book 1 but didn‘t feel like I was missing anything. I tend to prefer women writers, but his crafting is good enough that I would read more from him. And he made me feel like I was there, which I loved. 1y

The second in the Isle of Lewis trilogy. These books are so good. Excellent story telling and descriptions of the setting. In this follow up to The Blackhouse, Fin comes back to Lewis intending to fix up his parents‘ old home and repair relationships. He gets embroiled in a murder mystery when a body is found in the bog. The only person who may know what may have happened is suffering from advanced dementia. Fantastic read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 /5 ❤️📚

Fin returns to his home as he tries to decide his life after his failed job and marriage. A bog body is found, but it's only 50 years old not 2000 years. As Fin tries to help Marsaili's father, who has severe dementia, all isn't as it seems. Great story

Finished my #tartannoir today for #booked2020. This is the second book in a mystery series set in Scotland. Very atmospheric and dark. There were definitely some twists in here that I didn‘t see coming but the ending felt a little lackluster.

Cinfhen Disappointing that the ending wasn‘t satisfying 🙁at least you checked off the prompt 5y
Reviewsbylola It wasn‘t bad, just not really a wow factor. @Cinfhen 5y
Cinfhen It‘s funny how we‘ve become programmed for the WOW factor in thrillers. Damn, I just read a book ( thriller) and that was my complaint....no big surprise ending but now I can‘t recall what book it was 🤪 5y
See All 9 Comments
Reviewsbylola Haha haha I know!! I want to be totally shocked, which is really hard to do if I‘m honest because usually if you‘re paying attention it starts to all come together and you can see where everything is leading and on the flip side, if the perp comes out of thin air, that‘s not a great scenario either. I think that‘s why I‘ve strayed a lot from thrillers recently. @Cinfhen 5y
Susanita Without spoiling, I think I can say that there's more to that ending in the last book in the series. :) 5y

Today has been a terrible day, but I‘ll spare you the details. At least I had a good audiobook. This is the second in a trilogy and I liked it even better than the first. An excellent mystery rooted in the past that is slowly, delicately, and masterfully unraveled. I also loved listening to the narrator‘s accent. It makes even dark subjects easy on the ears. 4 1/2 stars.

Graciouswarriorprincess I am sorry! Sending hugs! 5y

I started The Little Drummer Girl on audio earlier in the week. I realized that I prefer reading Le Carre to myself, as his style requires more focus than I can give to an audiobook. So, I switched to The Lewis Man. I enjoyed Black House earlier this year. I‘m about a third of the way through already and switching was definitely the right choice. ☺️

Although this is part of the Fin McLeod series, he's not really the main character. Instead it's an old man who doesn't recognize his own daughter but can vividly remember many of the details of his rather crappy childhood: clandestine adventures that often led to disaster, a nasty headmaster, a harrowing #voyage to the lower Hebrides...

Luckily, our voyage there was more tranquil, albeit a little gloomy. #letstraveljuly

brit91 Beautiful picture! 5y
Susanita @brit91 Thank you! The scenery through this passage was stunning, and my little point and shoot barely does it justice. The ship's photographer even took a break from trying to sell cheesy portraits to the passengers, and he grabbed his camera and ran out to the deck to take many pictures. 5y

Second book in this series. Finn has quit the police force and returned to live on Lewis and is drawn into a mystery involving his former love Marsaili, whose father in the throes of dementia is identified as a close relative of a murder victim. The issue being that he is an only child of dead parents. Again not so much a mystery as a brilliant look at human nature and what we keep hidden from those we love. This series keeps getting better.

Guys. This series is so good. This story is partly told through the memories of one of the main characters, who has severe dementia, which just added to the haunting nature of the story. This series takes place on the Isle of Lewis, off the coast of Scotland- the way the location is described just sets up this story perfectly. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

With this book, Peter May is officially cemented as my new favourite author. Categorized as a mystery, The Lewis Man is so much more. It truly shows that it's not necessarily the story, but the delivery that is important. The mystery is secondary. Primarily, May focuses on family, the choices we make, and the difficulty in looking to our past and facing those choices. Amazing author and trilogy. Can't wait to get the last one!
