Pushing Up Daisies
Pushing Up Daisies: An Agatha Raisin Mystery | M. C. Beaton
15 posts | 21 read | 6 to read
When Agatha Raisin left behind her PR business in London, she fulfilled her dream of settling in the cozy British Cotswolds where she began a successful private detective agency. Unfortunately, the village she lives in is about to get a little less cozy. Lord Bellington, a wealthy land developer, wants to turn the community garden into a housing estate. When Agatha and her friend Sir Charles Fraith attempt to convince Lord Bellington to abandon his plans he scoffs: Do you think I give a damn about those pesky villagers? So when Agatha finds his obituary in the newspaper two weeks later, its no surprise that some in town are feeling celebratory. The villagers are relieved to learn that Bellingtons son and heir, Damian, has no interest in continuing his fathers development plans. But the police are definitely interested in himas suspect number one. His fathers death, it seems, was no accident. But when Damian hires Agatha to find the real killer, she finds no shortage of suspects. The good news is that a handsome retired detective named Gerald has recently moved to town. Too bad he was seen kissing another newcomer. But when she is also found murdered, Gerald is eager to help Agatha with the case. Agatha, Gerald, and her team of detectives must untangle a web of contempt in order to uncover a killers identity. M.C. Beaton's Pushing Up Daisies continues the tradition in this beloved mystery series.

Agatha Raisin has a few murders to solve, a possible new love interest, and constant conflicting thoughts about a longtime friend. This one is a low pick - I stayed for the characters, who are like friends at this point, but it was definitely more about her life and that of her detectives versus the mystery. Still, a worthy listen for longtime series readers.

Book 27 in the Agatha Raisin series is a wrap! I believe there‘s only one more left for me to read that was officially written by M.C. Beaton. I‘m sad about that but still glad she chose someone to continue writing Agatha‘s stories. Once I finally get caught up, I‘m looking forward to the show.

I enjoyed this one like all the others. As always, I‘d highly recommend this series via #audiobook — and they are all available on Audible Plus! 4⭐️

I felt quite sad reading this title because i knew there was only a few more of this collection to go before i finished it. ☹️
My spirits were lifted though when i found out another Agata Raisin murder mystery is to be released this year, 2019! 😁

This was another brilliant read! A highly recommended author by my books! ☺

I finally entered the realm of cozy mysteries, and the experience was... odd. Beaton's narrative spills out with nary a care for scene transitions, and with little attempt made to show instead of tell and none at all to avoid head hopping. It took me over 50 pages to decide I was more charmed than irritated.

That charm ensured I enjoyed the book overall, despite its oddities. I'll certainly read another Agatha Raisin novel.

xicanti Question time: can any of you cozy-lovers tell me if this sort of writing is standard for the genre or if Beaton's just quirky? 7y
quietjenn I do think Beaton is a little quirky. I was not a fan at all when I first started her books, but she's totally grown on me. I do think watching the series, which I really like, helped, although I think diehards probably hate the adaptations. 7y
xicanti @quietjenn I hadn't heard of the TV series until I borrowed this book from the library, but I'm gonna look for it once I've read a couple more of the novels. 7y

Andrew65 @xicanti I've read most of the books in the series and do enjoy them. Light entertaining reads. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I... I do not know what this Superman book is... I love Tim Sale! I love Darwyn Cooke! Never heard of this! Maaaaaybe going to just buy it right now? 7y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'd never heard of it either (which isn't too surprising, given my DC illiteracy), but as soon as I saw Darwyn Cooke's name I HAD to borrow it. 7y

Received some Amazon Kindle credit in the Apple ebook settlement so I bought myself 3 cozy ebook mysteries. ❤️😁

Libby1 I really enjoyed a Miranda James book I got from the library once, @AllenStClair . I can‘t remember the name of it at the moment! 7y
AllenTStClair @Libby1 Hopefully I love this one! 7y
azulaco I did the same- not cozy mysteries, but my Amazon settlement money was spent almost immediately on three new Kindle books. Gotta love free money for books! 7y

KathyWheeler I like the Miranda James mysteries. My Amazon credit was 76 cents. So not much to buy with that. 7y
AllenTStClair @KathyWheeler I was lucky to get just under $25. Definitely not mad about that. 😂 7y
KathyWheeler @AllenStClair I wouldn‘t be mad about that either. My first ereader was a Nook, and during the phase of the antitrust payments last year, I got $250 from Barnes & Noble! 7y
AllenTStClair @KathyWheeler That is definitely nothing to be mad about! 😆 A little “free” shopping is great, right? 7y
KathyWheeler @AllenStClair I know! I had tons of fun spending it too. 😄 7y

When a book mentions a place I've been in real life. Extra points if it's a small village with a Faulty tower's like hotel

Mehso-so

This book is a hot mess. Took me awhile to readjust to Beaton's writing style but I do love Agatha and her bunch of misfit detectives- even if there are a few jarring notes - that pulled me out of the narrative. I read this series with my Nana (who has always shared and encouraged my love of cozy crime) and it's nice knowing that there is a yearly instalment of Mrs Raisin's misadventures look forward to.

SusanInTiburon I have a love-hate relationship with this series. Love the characters, but the plots barely make sense to me. Fun once in a while. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @SusanInTiburon, the character to plot ratio was high in the book... could have done with a few less (I'm definitely reading for my favourite characters rather than the plot) 8y
