The term #DimeADozen came from the mid 1800s when things like eggs were often sold as a dozen for a dime. This was a favorite book & movie of mine growing up as this family tried to do everything economically & efficiently, both financially & in processes.

I remember loving this when we read it in 8th grade, but now it feels so foreign and antiquated to me. I'm assuming we had a bit of help when we read it, as everything pertains to life in the early 20th century but I'm not really enjoying it too much. 🤷♀️

I loved Cheaper by the Dozen when I read it as a kid- we did not have a dozen but we had 10 including my parents.
I am grateful for all of my family- my sibs, my husband & son, my nieces & nephews, my cats. ❤️❤️

pickThis is an old favorite of mine that I hadn't revisited in several years. A memoir of sorts, two of Frank Gilbreth's 12 children tell about their childhood. Gilbreth is a fascinating man, self-educated, brilliant, boisterous, challenging. His wife, Lillian, was a PhD who didn't allow a dozen pregnancies to stop her from partnering with her husband throughout his career, and carrying on with his work when he died.

Until we get down to the Peretti books they are all pretty short, so I am actually cautiously optimistic that I can get through a lot of these this week!! so-soIt was ok. Very quick read. Their father was a lot stricter than I imagined but then again I don‘t read a lot of stuff set so far in past. Maybe that was normal for the times.

Day 3 of #tarottakeover Today for the Empress card, I chose Cheaper by the Dozen. It is about a family that really did have 12 children, and is written by two of them. I have to admit I haven't read the whole book, but I have seen the original movie that tells the story of this family and they had many adventures!

My other favorite part of this book was what a time capsule it was! The kids get whooping cough, photo taking was a huge and loud production, and not only are there flappers but also "sheiks" and Joe College was somehow a thing. Most shocking to me was the discussion of women's underwear and the actual hairstyle in these photos! It was discussed as an option for women who didn't have the short flapper bob.
so-soA friend who studies efficiency recommended this book, and the thoughts on how to efficiently run a factory or a family were my favorite parts. The dad initially seemed like an awful tyrant but I'd somewhat warmed to him & enjoyed the last chapter. As a warning, everything about race in this book, which takes place about 100 years ago, is a best cringeworthy & more often very offensive 😓😬😠😮
I don‘t quite know why it was so tricky to find books on my shelves with #Cars on the cover. 🤔 (I‘ve always had a fondness for this vintage cover, though).

I read this book ages ago while growing up-as one of eight, it resonated with me.
I thought of doing Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley for today, but used it for another challenge recently. So I‘ll go with a childhood favorite - I remember loving this book. Wonder how it holds up? #day12 #novemberbythenumbers

This family was the inspiration for the films Cheaper By The Dozen😊😍
I always forget how long ago the events of CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN took place, until I reach a passage like this (side note: I worship Lillian Gilbreth more with every reading).

As the oldest of six children, I can certainly relate to the craziness of life in the Gilbreth household. I don't think there is another book that has made me laugh out loud like this one. There are so many hilarious moments...like the time the lady from Planned Parenthood showed up...or how Mr. Gilbreth names the pet birds "Shut Up" and "You Heard Me". Classic!!! #augustphotochallenge #funnybooks @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
