so-soIt was a fun light YA, but the characters didn‘t feel fully developed as they acted pretty inconsistently. It was a little all over the place. Luckily I was in the right mindset for it and didn‘t need something too heavy so it was an okay read for now. Read for #sundaybuddyread

pickThis was a beautifully told story of Rachel, a runaway slave on the search for her children that were taken from her. A fascinating look at the different ways of survival. I started reading a hard copy and it was slow go, but when I switched to audiobook, this story really came alive. I think reading this in my own voice did this story a disservice but hearing “Rachel‘s” voice vastly improved it. Read for #literarycrew
so-soIt seems fitting that I finished this in the middle of the night. It was interesting but also a bit mediocre. Not sure if I‘m interested enough to read the second one. I liked the lore as it wasn‘t anything I was familiar with, plus I wanted to see what happened. But quite a bit angsty for me. #bookspin for September
pickI really enjoyed this historical fiction novel about Varian Fry and his time in France during WWII rescuing Jewish artists and refugees. An amazing story, beautifully told. I did the audiobook version and the narration was wonderful. I do wish I read it as I feel I missed some details, but still was thoroughly engaged. Read for #sundaybuddyread
August was easy because I only read one book. I probably wouldn‘t have picked it if I had finished one of the other books I was working on but still 4 more months I‘m the year. And makes for easy choices moving further in the bracket. I love how different the two brackets I have are turning out. Upper left was a tough decision for Lincoln Highway shadow more staying power for me. @Catsandbooks Thanks for the bracket!
August was a bit of bust reading wise, but it was because I started a new position at work that has turned my brain to mush and haven‘t really been able to muster the energy to read at night. Maybe I‘ll get the swing of things in September and get back at it. We‘ll see!
pickI had to put this one aside to finish some buddy reads, but finished this in a fury once I picked it back up. Just loved this and the end and some of the notions presented at the end were thing I needed to hear/read at this moment. Funny how life works sometimes. Strong feminist themes with a lovely sense of humor. Highly recommend. Finished Poolside 😎
pickSt James delivers again with this one. A series of murders happen on a spooky stretch of road in the woods of Michigan. Our lead couple get caught up in the investigation and have secrets of their own. Top tier St James! Read for #sundaybuddyread

pickA phenomenal read. A nonfiction story that reads like fiction. You come to love these women that were put through such horrors and completely disregarded by the company that caused them. I was in awe of their resilience and determination to fight.
pickWhat a wonderful read! The Trojan war and the aftermath as told by the women who lived through it. Expertly crafted and quite clever. I agree with another review that I saw that the Penelope parts were my favorite. Read for #literarycrew
pickA coming of age story of Aria, a high school graduate going to stay with her artist grandmother in the San Francisco area after an unfortunate incident with a boy dismantles her original plans. We learn a lot about who Aria is and where she comes from and in all this she learns about various kinds of love and herself. #sundaybuddyread

pickThis ended up being quite good. Unfortunately I kept finding myself comparing it to her first one, but this one is still good on its own. A look at a second generation Palestinian American woman and her struggle with mental health. It was interesting seeing the immense cultural impact that added to her struggle. It‘s a quiet study and because of that turns quite beautiful with our mc‘s revelations.
panI don‘t know much about Dorothy Parker and it‘s a shame this was my first introduction. Frankly, even if they were fictional characters I don‘t know that I would have cared for this one still. It was a struggle to finish and really dealt with trigger topics such as sexual assault, abortion, and suicide quite poorly. Finished to continue the discussion with #sundaybuddyread which (as usual) was the best thing to come of this.
pickAn epic story about 4 boys making a fresh start for themselves. Alternating perspectives mostly from 3 of the boys. Shows the complexity of human behavior and you truly get invested in each of the characters. While it could have been shorter; I enjoyed the perspectives of the ancillary characters. It‘s just under 600 pages but is a surprisingly quick read.
This week‘s section of #sundaybuddyread was INTENSE! Pretty graphic triggers but I‘m sure will make for quite the discussion. I‘m still wrapping my head around it 🤐

panThis was the oldest book on my tbr and it didn‘t really deliver for me. Told through alternating perspectives of Paul and a police investigator, Amanda, but then also through Paul‘s past. A crime committed by his former friends when he was a teenager is being copied. Amanda wants to find the who, Paul is finding out the why. An interesting enough premise for me to want to know what happened, but the style made it hard for me to get through.
pickThe beauty of this book is in its simplicity. From its beautiful cover to our titular character. A short read that follows the life of Zorrie. It is beautifully written and is incredibly efficient. I highly recommend! Delightful read for #sundaybuddyread and overlaps as my #doublespin!
pickAnother fun read! I didn‘t go into this one with high expectations as wasn‘t a huge fan of People We Meet on Vacation, but this one is exponentially better! The characters are much more complex and loved their development and tension. Also, fun to finish on a cold, snowy, April day.
pickBoy, did I love this book! I am a sucker for handwriting in books anyway (probably stems from The Babysitter Club days of my youth). I have a habit where at some point I read the last sentence of a story, (a morbid habit) and this one was a bit of a spoiler but the journey getting there was so fun that I didn‘t care. The tension between our two main characters was lovely and ended up being a great payoff. #bookspin for April

so-soThis was a pretty quick and fun read but surprised that it was a finalist in 2020 for BOTM. Some of the twists were pretty outlandish and it really felt like a mediocre thriller. I feel like some of this could be solved by ordering some of the chapters, but I‘m not an author so 🤷🏼♀️
Hi Litsy Friends, I‘ve been a little behind one things. But there‘s a good reason, I swear! Tuesday was at the gym and had a cardiac arrest. They had an aed and called emergency services. I was rushed to the hospital, in icu a few days, got an defibrillator installed, and back home yesterday. Not looking for sympathy, just incredibly grateful to be alive, and if people happen to recognize my absence wanted to give some info. Happy Reading!
panMorally ambiguous look at grief and revenge. I should have bailed but the concept was interesting enough to keep me going. Our protagonist is grieving from the death of her daughter. Even worse, the perpetrator of the crime was never convicted. She finds solace in a group on the dark web but quickly gets in over her head in an effort to bring her daughter‘s killer to justice. Wasn‘t a fan of the mc and her choices making it hard to enjoy.
It‘s funny, my book this month is tagged and I‘ll definitely read it or listen to it again when the next book in the series comes out, but my January book, Homegoing, will probably stick with me longer and would recommend to more people.
