Julie Kagawa meets Scythe in this captivating and evocative journey into Death's domain as one soul collector seeks her place in the underworld of 1890s Japan. Death is her destiny. Half British Reaper, half Japanese Shinigami, Ren Scarborough yearns for the acceptance she has never found among the Reapers who raised her. When the Shinigami powers she can no longer hide force her to flee for her life, Ren and her younger brother - the only being on earth to care for her - travel to Japan and the dark underworld of Yomi, where Ren hopes to claim her place among the Shinigami and finally belong. But the Goddess of Death is no more welcoming than the Reapers who raised her, and Ren finds herself set on an impossible task - find and kill three yokai demons, and maybe, just maybe, she can earn a place in Death's service. With only her brother and an untrustworthy new ally by her side, Ren will learn how far she'll go to win the acceptance she craves, and whether the cost of belonging is worth any sacrifice.

It seems fitting that I finished this in the middle of the night. It was interesting but also a bit mediocre. Not sure if I‘m interested enough to read the second one. I liked the lore as it wasn‘t anything I was familiar with, plus I wanted to see what happened. But quite a bit angsty for me. #bookspin for September

Once my bookshelf organizing was finished I contemplated what in the world did I want to read for the #rushathon. Oh, it‘s going somewhere! Inspired by a Friends episode I chose to read the last #botm book and the first #aardvark book I bought.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh that was a satisfying ending. And I'm here only for the IN YOUR FACE moment. Ahhhh. Just for that I'm giving it a 3.5. I went from disliking the MC to not liking her at all LOL but I am curious about what exactly happened. It is a #duology so only a few more hours to go #fantasy #historical #japan #myths #shinigami

I'm slowly getting to the end and idk, I don't dislike it but I also am not feeling it. The only thing I'm feeling is a great dislike for the MC. I get it, she was bullied for centuries but also, why is she treating the one person on her side so cruelly while mooning for a suspicious guy...I have beef 😤😤 and hope that something happens so I can shout TOLD U SO 💀

I have ten books downloaded and am potentially, slowly, getting through them 😂 I picked up the keeper of the night bc i got the sequel on Netgalley, it's about soul reapers so yeah, maybe I'm imaging bleach in my head 😂 it's... alright so far, not much has happened but the bullying is rather graphic 😔

I love when an author is able to take me into a world that is completely foreign and paint it with such clear strokes that I feel like I've been there before. The soul of this story is about someone who desperately wants to figure out who she is and dreams that making it to her goal will finally bring her happiness. And once you get there, is it what you thought it would be? So relatable, despite the fantasy setting.

I always love morally grey characters and Ren definitely was one. I also loved her relationship with her brother, and could understand why Ren wanted to protect him.

I really love darker stories and this had the atmosphere that I love so much. This was refreshingly different and even a bit magical.

This was a story that didn't drag and still had a good worldbuilding. Some twists were predictable but there were some surprises as well.

I enjoyed this morally gray character and her journey with death. I learned about some new Japanesse mythology and interested enough to read book 2, especially with the ending

I did not particularly enjoy this book. The premise is interesting and should have been more compelling, but for me the book was too dry and boring from beginning to end. I finished it, but I‘m not too excited about another book in this duology. A lot of readers enjoyed it, but I found it a difficult read.

🎧📚 1st surprise of the year & it‘s book one. Read on 1/1/22.

Ren is half British Reaper & half Japanese Shinigami. She‘s been collecting souls for hundreds of years in London & she‘s running away with her younger brother to see if life is better for a halfling in Japan. It broke my heart a little. I liked the characters.

Generally not a book I‘d love but I did. #BOTM

This one started out slow but very quickly couldn‘t put it down! Quick read, gory and awesome folklore. My first time learning about Shinigami and all the different types of Yokai, now I‘m obsessed and want to learn more!!👹
Super happy the author is writing a sequel #BOTM

Not super thrilled with this month‘s selections (yet again), but decided on this one. #BOTM

Patchshank I chose the same one. I don't usually like YA, but it was definitely seemed to be the most interesting. 3y

I loved TKON. I loved the concept of creatures of Death collecting souls for a living, and having different cultures while they're at it. I've always wanted to read a story like this. This book had an interesting main character whom I could immediately get behind even before the first chapter was over.

If you like Japanese mythology, and love yōkai anime/manga, I highly recommend that you pick up this book.

⭐: 4.5

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.

Some books I'm pretty excited to read over the next few months. ✨😃

Heard some good things about The Atlas Six (first book in a series), and The Sword of Kaigen (a standalone). Vespertine, and The Keeper of Night will be released next month; The Excalibur Curse, in December.

Ohhh, this YA fantasy is deliciously dark, just as you might expect in a story about a young girl—part Reaper, part Shinigami—trying to earn her place in Death‘s ranks. At its core, it‘s a story about belonging, about finding your people when everyone around you says “You‘re not one of us,” & about the family you make. It‘s a story about just how far someone will go to feel a part of something & what they give up in the process. On sale 10/12/21.

I mean, no, no way did I pick my next book because the cover is so cool I couldn‘t look away when I saw it as I was going through my TBR stacks looking for my next read…I would nev—ok, yeah, I totally did. The good news is that three chapters in and so far, so good. It‘s very entertaining. Hopefully that continues.
