The Hunger Games | Suzanne Collins
post image

District 12 is not an ideal home to most. Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute to take part in the hunger games, where only one shall survive. But there's a slight twist that one survivor is not the case... this link provides activities for students https://www.google.com/amp/s/historytech.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/8-hunger-games...

DrSpalding I have read the series and thoroughly enjoyed them along with the movies. This is more appropriate for middle school children but as we discussed in class, some intermediate elementary kids have read these books. 8y

I had to add in a thirteenth book because when I was able to reread this story, I had so many connections come from when I was younger. I think I will always be a fan of the series Lemony Snicket produced. Love. ❣️

DrSpalding Have you watched any of the Netflix series? 8y
katelynn_lawson @DrSpalding no... I'm too afraid to be disappointed 😨 8y

"My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons" After reading this in class, I had to go read it, or should I say sing it, to someone. I chose my 12 year old brother. He was not impressed, but I did catch him singing it later on. This video shares a similar tune as to the one we used in class. https://youtu.be/dkQ4d_fff3

DrSpalding Ha! The songs are very catchy whether you are a child, a tween, or an adult! We love Pete! 8y
JarecS Pete the Cat is a favorite for my nephew. He absolutely loved these books and he hates reading 8y

Meet the Bobs and Tweets | Pepper Springfield
post image

Thanks to a certain professor, I now have in my possession this quirky little story. The drawings reminded me very much of something Doctor Seuss would have created. Oh what a day in the life of a Bob would entail... I think I side more with the Tweets. My kind of clean. Scholastic offers some more fun books similar to this here on their site- https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/meet-the-bobs-and-tweets-by-pepper-spr...

In the traditional literature story, the three little pigs take on a more modern day look. There's still three pigs, there's still a bad wolf, and there is still a house that makes it out alive. Readers can create these characters before or after the story to make reading the story more fun. Steps located here: http://www.firstpalette.com/Craft_themes/Animals/paperplateanimals/paperplateani...

DrSpalding Perfect resource for storytelling! So fun! 8y
JarecS A more modern Three Little Pigs catches my attention. Might have to pick this one up 8y

In this science fiction novel, young Harry returns for another year at Hogwarts. With whispers crawling through the walls, and people going missing, Harry takes it upon himself to go and get to the bottom of things. This photo is from a website readers are able to share their book art and have it featured for all to see http://star-crossedxx.deviantart.com/art/Harry-Potter-and-the-Chamber-of-Secrets...

DrSpalding I truly enjoyed the entire Harry Potter series and movies. The idea of sharing book art is wonderful! Thanks for sharing. 8y
CaraM The Harry Potter Series is the best! I really like the new books that came out with the vivid illustrations! 8y

Dolphins | Sylvia M. James
post image
Mehso-so

This sweet non-fiction book shares information about dolphins in their natural habitat and my favorite place, the water. From their diet, to their sleeping patterns, Sylvia James covers it all. This link takes you to Pinterest to see a cute interactive plate that displays a dolphin "jumping" over waves. http://pin.it/ViccPEe

DrSpalding We had some of these books as guided reading material in my school. Children enjoy nonfiction very much! 8y
CaraM I used to love books on marine life growing up. We need more of these in our schools. 8y

The little boy I read this to (featured in the background) could not stop talking about "Washington crossing the Delaware" because that's what his daddy told him the picture on their fridge was of. We looked up an interactive map of the world and played a game here-- http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm

DrSpalding This makes me proud. Excellent job sharing this with a child. Incorporating geography and history is wonderful. 8y
JRQuintanilla Can never go wrong with a book about George Washington. I don't think I've ever seen a child dislike anything about him. Awesome post! 8y
CaraM History is one of my favorite subjects. When getting into the revolutionary war, this would be perfect to bring out. 8y

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image
Pickpick

This part animal fantasy, and part realistic fiction novel shares so many sweet moments. Taken from the silver back gorillas point of view, Applegate leads us on a fun adventure from a highway exit mall, to a great wide open. On this fun website, teachers and students can see other works relating to the book and different interpretations of the story. http://weloveivan.com

The Cat in the Hat | Dr. Seuss

Pickpick

Dr. Seuss's 'The Cat in the Hat' is such an exciting story to read. The fiction life that Seuss provides for the little ones is so silly that they can't help but follow along. Check out Ms. Lawson's Kindergarten class at Woodlands Elementary in Longwood, Florida with their blue hair representing the Things in this story! LOVE THEM! ❤️ #ReadAcrossAmericaDay #UCFLAE3414SP17

DrSpalding Ms. Lawson, this amazing! #readacrossamerica 8y

Mlegg I love this idea! Those little hats are so cute and I'm sure the kids LOVED wearing them as they read the story. A great way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday!☺ 8y

Willow Brook Farm | Katherine D. Christ
post image

"I will never forget Willow Brook Farm. I'll be back again next spring". I loved this historical fiction book. It gave a real insight to life on a farm in the late 40's, early 50's.
Katherine Christ has her own award, check it out! https://www.kutztown.edu/academics/colleges-and-departments/education/department...

DrSpalding Don't forget our hashtag or the genre.🙂 8y
Mlegg I love that this book takes the reader back in time. In this day in age it is so important to always remember where we came from and what we learned during that time!☺ 8y

Wonder | R. J. Palacio
post image

I admire all the truths that Palacio gives into growing up a bit different than others. In this realistic fiction story, August Pullman is a boy who your heart can't help but love while flipping through every page. The medical condition noted in this story is so rare that fewer than 20,000 people in the United States are reported each year. To learn more about TCS, click the link https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/treacher-collins-syndrome

DrSpalding Thanks for adding the stats related to this rare disease. Such a WONDER-ful read! 8y
Mlegg I also read Wonder in the second group for this book and I loved it! Such a great book for students to be exposed to. It teaches that every person is different in their own way and that we should always "choose kind". 8y
HeyMsBowen After hearing so many amazing things about this, I really need to go read it!!! :) Thanks for posting! 8y
