I reread this book over break and remembered why I loved it so much. In Jonas's life, there's a perfect idea of a society. As the book progresses, his view on society changes drastically. This spin on the tale of Sleeping Beauty puts Maleficent as the main character. 👍🏻 I love this because it gives insight to the villain, whom kids never really focus on when reading. This picture book won the Caldecott award! Marjorie Priceman does an amazing illustration of the components of an orchestra and a diverse group of instruments. Along the way, children learn vocabulary from solo, all the way up to chamber. I was impressed by the illustrations! In the sixth grade, all Beth can think about is Phillip Hall, an athletic, hard working boy who won't give her the time of day! Over the course of the book, Beth starts to develop a close friendship with Phillip, who works on a farm and plays guitar. This was an awesome coming of age fiction book! This is one of my favorite children's fiction books! Being a music ed major, this book provides tons of opportunities to incorporate instruments into the story. I've done a lesson where kids play drums and shakers on certain parts of the book. Even read aloud as a story, it's great for Halloween!
