The Majesties: A Novel | Tiffany Tsao

Can this butterfly count as cozy fire orange?

I really liked this book! It's all flashback, so it was hard to feel motivated at times, but the family intrigue kept me going. I loved the details about Indonesian culture and history.

I heard this compared to We Have Always Lived in the Castle though, and I feel that was misleading. Yes, the poisoning is similar, you learn about it first thing, but the feel and circumstances are so different!

CatLass007 Wow. It‘s been so long since I read #WeHaveAlwaysLivedInTheCastle. I remember nothing about it including a poisoning. 4y

This is the first Shirley Jackson book I‘ve ever read & I really enjoyed it! It‘s short, but very creepy & captivating. I needed to know what exactly happened to this family & who was responsible for it. Definitely makes you think. #shirleyjackson #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #creepy

Wow, what a book. Although I already figured who the murderer of the Blackwood family was, I was quite surprised how the story ended. 😱
And I just realized, there‘s a movie too. 🤗

Same procedure as every Friday. A decent coffee (hard to find in Egypt), breakfast and a good read. I found this novel in my kindle library, can‘t remember why I bought it, but it‘s pretty good so far - still couldn‘t figure out who poisened the family, Caroline or Mary Katherine...

Finished this one today. I listened to “The Haunting Of Hill House” a few months back and I will say they do feel similar. But also it was the exact same narrator who wasn‘t particularly my favorite but I recognized her voice immediately. I hated Charles. But I enjoyed the story. And the movie will be on Netflix tomorrow which I intend to watch.

A sense of dread haunted this novel. From beginning to end, the narrative surrounding Merricat, Constance, and Uncle Julian is saturated with a haunting of the past, of deeds that can't be taken back, of dead family. Charles, who changes the entire tone of the novel with his focus on money, power, and masculinity, barges into of their lives to disastrous effect. These characters‘ development is gradual and powerful for its patience in revelation.

Spent most of the day inside reading because of the smoke outside. Looking forward to getting out of the house tonight for a food and wine event.

I‘ve recently discovered #ShirleyJackson and am amazed by her work. I want to find more female authors writing #horror #supernatural #gothic reads! 🖤

#California #femaleauthor #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle 🏰

Jee_HookedOnBookz Wow I've never seen this cover before! Love it! 6y
gradcat Sorry about all the fires out there...the smoke must be awful—take care outside! 6y
jmofo Shirley Jackson was an amazing writer! I read this tagged book because Hand won a Shirley Jackson award and the cover caught my eye at the library. She writes in different genres. This is the only book I‘ve read by her but I liked the variety of the stories and how contemporary they felt. 6y
BooknerdsLife Read this book last year & love it so much that I read her Haunting of Hill House too. Brilliant writing!!! What a cool cover! 😍 Never seen it before! I'm so sorry about the fire there, keep safe 🙏💕 6y

LittleMummyMe @BooknerdsLife I really like it. I don't normally read this genre but I thought I'd read it for Halloween lol. I'm only up to chapter 3 ATM. So I'm not too far in, I find the writing style great. 👍🏼 6y

BooknerdsLife @LittleMummyMe haha same! I don't read horror story often too, but at least once a year for Halloween 😃😄 Is this your first Jackson book? Read #WeHaveAlwaysLivedinTheCastle last year & absolutely loved it but totally forgot I was planning to read this for this year's Halloween. 🙈😆#TooManyBooksTooLittleTime (Bookworms problem right?) Hope this is just as good & not too late to start... Have anyone watched the series now on Netflix with the same title? Does anyone know if its based on the book? 🤔

GatheringBooks currently in episode 2 of the netflix series - read the book only a few months back: two very diff animals. its clearly adapted from jackson‘s novel, a few names were retained, but plot and storyline are entirely different. both are equally good though. 6y
BooknerdsLife @GatheringBooks Oh thank you! That's good to know. I wanted to watch the series but was afraid it would spoil the book for me. Now I can enjoy them both separately 😀👍 6y
