If you‘re on the fence about possibly wanting to homeschool and not sure if it‘s for you, this is a good read.

One of the better homeschool books I‘ve read (and I read a lot of them!), though it‘s short on specifics. It‘s philosophy-heavy rather than prescriptive, and while it includes summaries of the main schools of thought (including one I‘ve never heard of) it‘s aimed more at what all homeschool families can embrace together - nature, play, story, creativity, and relationships, for instance. I‘m considering buying my own copy and subscribing. Maybe.

Alfoster Sounds good! Both my daughters homeschool…I‘ll ck it out! 3y
ravenlee @Alfoster The author has been running an online community for several years, apparently - they‘re on Facebook (which I found) and Instagram (which I don‘t do). Seems to be a surprisingly robust movement! 3y
Alfoster In a nutshell, what‘s the movement about? 3y

ravenlee @Alfoster basically, it‘s about getting outside as much as possible (some Charlotte Mason inspiration) and giving kids the freedom to have a real childhood. She‘s very supportive and inclusive of the differences in individual homeschools and focuses on how we can all try to let our kids be kids as much as possible and embrace the freedom to adapt everything to what‘s best for the children. 3y
Alfoster Thanks for that! I think our girls do that a lot as they have plenty of outdoor space and encourage “play” all the time. Appreciate you taking the time to tell me!👊❤️ 3y
ravenlee @Alfoster glad to share! I‘ve read so many of these books that are preachy or too narrowly focused, so it‘s nice to find one that felt good to read. 3y
Alfoster Absolutely agree! I taught high school English for almost 40 years and didn‘t know if homeschool would be good for the kids (as I‘d had many who were undisciplined and not willing to meet deadlines). But seems like there‘s so much good stuff out there and grandkids are way beyond where some of my kids were (well, figure 43 in my class and 4 in homeschool)! I help out now that I‘m retired and love it! 3y
ravenlee @Alfoster I found the web page for the Wild + Free homeschool community https://www.bewildandfree.org/ A lot of it is marketing their stuff, magazines or retreats or whatnot, but still some worthwhile reads. 3y
Alfoster Thanks!!!👊 3y
Alfoster Older daughter said she‘s on this website all the time and it‘s good stuff!🥰 3y

We finished reading chapter 6 of @neildegrassetyson's ASTROPHYSICS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN A HURRY today, and we weren't going to skip an opportunity to make "The Universe as Hot Cocoa"! ☕? 68% dark energy (hot cocoa), 27% dark matter (whipped cream), and 5% regular matter (cinnamon).

Things are in transition with our cooperative school, so I‘ve been doing a lot of hard thinking and brainstorming for next year. This book is just the encouragement I needed, plus the photos are gorgeous. I highly recommend this for any parent contemplating or even in the midst of #homeschooling or #unschooling.

saresmoore Shout out to @Suet624 who gave me these amazing socks that I‘m pretty sure will last forever! ♥️ 5y
Suet624 I‘m fairly certain they came with a lifetime guarantee. Seriously. 💕💕 5y
Lindy @Suet624 @saresmoore Are they made by Darn Tough? They will replace for free. I‘ve got a couple of pairs that seem like they‘ll never wear out, but I know a cross-country skier who has traded in his worn socks. Icebreaker also has no-questions-asked replacement on any of their socks that wear out. 5y
Suet624 @Lindy yes. They are darn tough socks. They are based on Vermont and expanding into bigger facilities. They are such yummy socks. 5y

The Birchbark House | Louise Erdrich
post image

C and I have been reading THE BIRCHBARK HOUSE by Louise Erdrich together. She's 10, but I think there's something special about read-alouds at any age. I first heard about this book from Dr. Debbie Reese, and honestly, I feel cheated that it was never introduced to me as a kid. The language is so beautifully descriptive, the story is rich and sweet and even humorous at times. It's perfect. ❤ #nativeauthors #historicalfiction #kidlit #unschooling

emtobiasz I just read this one with my homeschool kids book club, and I was expecting mixed reactions, especially with some of the tougher scenes toward the end. Nope— they universally loved it. 5y
lovelybookshelf @emtobiasz awwww I love that! 5y

I'm humbly showing the six books I read in September😌I'm a slow reader but someday....I will read more books per month....someday😉

Tamra Quality over quantity! Life is busy too, I can only fit in so much. 5y
Gissy @Tamra True! Sometimes I can only read a couple of minutes before I go to sleep. But I enjoy what I read, quality reading as you said!😃 5y
Cpg That would be a feat for me!!! I read 2 in the last week or so and that was unusual! 5y

Gissy @Cpg We are normal readers I guess☺️Every time I see persons reading over 10 per month, I say to myself that they are supernatural readers😂amazing! But my problem is not that I am a slow reader, my problem is that I accumulate books like a fast reader😳stacks, piles of beautiful, lovely books!📚📚📚❤️❤️❤️❤️😌 5y
Chrissyreadit That is great!!!! 5y
LeahBergen Happy Birthday!!! 📚😘📚😘 5y
Cpg @Gissy I am a “book collector” then! 😆😆😆 I am always on the holds lists for all the libraries in my county! I think if I could devote hours each day I would be an “avid reader”! ***But for now I‘ve got many “things” going on- with grandchildren and young adult children! Lots of joy though❣️ 5y

“Unschooling is simply living, and allowing your children to live, without the specter of conventional schooling and school-like thinking. It is the act of fusing living and learning, of seeing them as one and the same. There is no one way to be an unschooler, no singular path of facilitating self-directed education. There is you, your children, your family, your community—your life.”
