This book is a fictional account of the lives of Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife Fanny, told from her perspective. I‘ve tried unsuccessfully to read Treasure Island, and really don‘t have any great desire to read his books. Even so, this book was fascinating! It explored his very sickly life and his very independent wife who quite literally saved him by taking to the high seas despite her awful sea sickness. And it‘s a story of Fanny‘s own ⬇️

Texreader traumatic life experiences and frightening health scare. Ultimately, moving again and again to find a place where RLS will not just survive but thrive, they build a home in #Samoa. This was a well-written and very interesting novel that I highly recommend even for those who are not RLS fans. #readingOceania #litsyAtoZ #letterU 2mo

Big News! I finished this book, which means I completed the #LitsyAtoZ challenge!! I‘ve read books that start with every letter of the alphabet this year for the seventh year in a row! This book was for #Samoa #ReadingOceania, a challenge I finished much earlier this year but for which I still have more books I found and want to read. Review to come.

When Louis tried to stop a man from beating his dog, Louis‘s response to the man justifying himself was priceless: “He‘s not your dog. He‘s God‘s dog.“

This is the low end of the pick scale for me. I liked it better than his book about China, a place he actively seemed to hate. Headhunters is different than his usual travel books, however; here Troost is following Robert Louis Stevenson‘s trip through the South Seas while also dealing with his own alcoholism, so this book is less fun than some of his others.

This one was a little more serious than Troost‘s other books. Having faced his alcoholism and completed rehab Troost takes on another adventure- this time following the steps of Robert Louis Stevenson in Oceania. I actually appreciated his introspection and enjoyed this one more than Sex Lives of Cannibals. (He seems to pick his titles at random. They have nothing to do with the books.) #ReadingOceania24 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Great review! I‘ve yet to read this one by him. Some day! 6mo

The opening quote of the tagged book

The book is a fictional take on Stevenson and Fannie and their crazy travels. I‘m looking forward to it!

CoffeeNBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It's... interesting. I'm not sure if I really like it, but I'm sticking with it. The premise is interesting, but I feel like the storyline keeps derailing. 10mo

This is not a fun book like all of the author‘s books from Oceania—you will learn he‘s sadly and desperately recovering from alcoholism, which isn‘t much of a surprise if you read his prior books. So trigger warning. He takes a solo trip to follow Robert Louis Stevenson‘s travels to his final resting place in #Samoa, with stops in #Kiribati and islands in #Micronesia. Having listened to his other books, this is a sharp departure from his ⬇️

Texreader fun-loving days in Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Fiji. But it‘s still him doing half-witted things like a very short swim with sharks. His candor and insight are appreciated. It‘s a well-written book. By the way, if you haven‘t guessed by now, the titles of his books are only very remotely related to the substance of his books, here even less so. I hope his recovery continues. #readingOceania @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB (edited) 10mo
Librarybelle Good to know about this one! 10mo
5feet.of.fury I always loved the 1st chapter, “Good luck seeks no antecedent, but bad luck demands an inquest.” “Bad things happen to me on large land masses” I agree with you on the tone, it‘s 1 I‘ve hardly revisited because of the intensity of the self reflection vs the wild adventure of the 1st 2. 10mo
