Headhunters on My Doorstep
Headhunters on My Doorstep: A True Treasure Island Ghost Story | J. Maarten Troost
15 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Follow in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson with J. Maarten Troost, the bestselling author of The Sex Lives of Cannibals. Readers and critics alike adore J. Maarten Troost for his signature wry and witty take on the adventure memoir. Headhunters on My Doorstep chronicles Troosts return to the South Pacific after his struggle with alcoholism left him numb to life. Deciding to retrace the path once traveled by the author of Treasure Island, Troost follows Robert Louis Stevenson to the Marquesas, the Tuamotus, Tahiti, Kiribati, and Samoa, tumbling from one comic misadventure to another. Headhunters on My Doorstep is a funny yet poignant account of one mans journey to find himself that will captivate travel writing aficionados, Robert Louis Stevenson fans, and anyone who has ever lost his way.

The ending felt very unsatisfying. The whole book I felt like the ending was going to involve divorce, but the ending didn‘t even involve a proper ending or closure. This book is funny in the way of a Troost book, but it had a much darker tone because, ultimately, this is his addiction and recovery memoir. It‘s actually heartbreaking in some ways, and it‘s hard to put my finger on exactly why.

GingerAntics I honestly wish there was one more Troost book after this one (this is the last he published), just to have that happy, goofy, inquisitive feeling of the first two books in this trilogy, and to know how things turned out. #JMaartenTroost #HeadhunstersOnMyDoorstep #addiction #recovery #alcoholism #audiobook 2w
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury yes, very different tone to the first two. I have mixed feelings here. The ending was almost just “well, the deadline is in five minutes and I have to attach it to the email first.” Did that happen in his little one bedroom or efficiency apartment or at home with his wife and children? Who knows? We may never know. I really hope it‘s the latter. 2w

5feet.of.fury @GingerAntics yeah he seems to have fallen off the map entirely after this (&there was@supposed to be another book) The opening of this book is amazing. His wife was such a trooper too (hiking on remote islands heavily pregnant, etc) so you just know he was putting her through it. 2w
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury I love how she said if he ever drank again she‘d make him a eunuch. 🤣😂🤣 that makes me think she probably didn‘t divorce him… but then he ran away from home. I don‘t know. Last updated bio I saw say he lived with his wife and 2 sons in California. 2w
Bookwormjillk I wish there was another book too. I enjoyed these. 2w

I‘m not sure if this is funny or tragic. He‘s returned to Kiribati without his wife and children (apparently they have 2 sons now), having seemingly run away from home after going to rehab for alcoholism (at least he‘s not drinking), and he‘s waxing poetic about how things are just how they were when they left. It‘s funny in its way, but it‘s also heartbreaking. I seriously feel like this is a harbinger of divorce ahead.

GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury how am I not surprised he‘s an alcoholic? I‘m really hoping this doesn‘t end in him getting divorced. (edited) 2w
Texreader Once you read one you have to keep going right? 😁 2w
GingerAntics @Texreader seriously! Yes! I even want to read the one on China. 2w
GingerAntics @Texreader I‘m just hoping he‘s not divorced by the end of this book… that shouldn‘t exist because they cancelled his contract for it?! 2w

This is the low end of the pick scale for me. I liked it better than his book about China, a place he actively seemed to hate. Headhunters is different than his usual travel books, however; here Troost is following Robert Louis Stevenson‘s trip through the South Seas while also dealing with his own alcoholism, so this book is less fun than some of his others.

This one was a little more serious than Troost‘s other books. Having faced his alcoholism and completed rehab Troost takes on another adventure- this time following the steps of Robert Louis Stevenson in Oceania. I actually appreciated his introspection and enjoyed this one more than Sex Lives of Cannibals. (He seems to pick his titles at random. They have nothing to do with the books.) #ReadingOceania24 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Great review! I‘ve yet to read this one by him. Some day! 11mo

This is not a fun book like all of the author‘s books from Oceania—you will learn he‘s sadly and desperately recovering from alcoholism, which isn‘t much of a surprise if you read his prior books. So trigger warning. He takes a solo trip to follow Robert Louis Stevenson‘s travels to his final resting place in #Samoa, with stops in #Kiribati and islands in #Micronesia. Having listened to his other books, this is a sharp departure from his ⬇️

Texreader fun-loving days in Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Fiji. But it‘s still him doing half-witted things like a very short swim with sharks. His candor and insight are appreciated. It‘s a well-written book. By the way, if you haven‘t guessed by now, the titles of his books are only very remotely related to the substance of his books, here even less so. I hope his recovery continues. #readingOceania @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB (edited) 1y
Librarybelle Good to know about this one! 1y
5feet.of.fury I always loved the 1st chapter, “Good luck seeks no antecedent, but bad luck demands an inquest.” “Bad things happen to me on large land masses” I agree with you on the tone, it‘s 1 I‘ve hardly revisited because of the intensity of the self reflection vs the wild adventure of the 1st 2. 1y

The author is touring islands in Micronesia in this book. At the museum yesterday I took photos of some of the artwork from Micronesia including this “Carved Male Figure,” from early 20th century

I visited the Oceania gallery at the San Antonio Museum of Art, so be prepared for a few interruptions for pictures of artifacts from the regions I‘m reading about. #readingOceania @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle
