When Louis tried to stop a man from beating his dog, Louis‘s response to the man justifying himself was priceless: “He‘s not your dog. He‘s God‘s dog.“

Pickpick

This is the low end of the pick scale for me. I liked it better than his book about China, a place he actively seemed to hate. Headhunters is different than his usual travel books, however; here Troost is following Robert Louis Stevenson‘s trip through the South Seas while also dealing with his own alcoholism, so this book is less fun than some of his others.

This one was a little more serious than Troost‘s other books. Having faced his alcoholism and completed rehab Troost takes on another adventure- this time following the steps of Robert Louis Stevenson in Oceania. I actually appreciated his introspection and enjoyed this one more than Sex Lives of Cannibals. (He seems to pick his titles at random. They have nothing to do with the books.) #ReadingOceania24 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Great review! I‘ve yet to read this one by him. Some day! 4mo

V?: Stories by Women of the Moana | Lani Wendt Young, Sisilia Eteuati

Pickpick

This is a collection of over 50 short stories and poems, by women from various #readingoceania24 countries, including #newzealand, #fiji, #tonga, #papuanewguinea and, the one I‘m going for, #samoa.

Thank you so much for sending this to me Holly @Hooked_on_books - I really enjoyed it and also felt like I‘d learned a lot about the different cultures. I did prefer the more ‘modern‘ storytelling rather than the fables but there was a great mix.

Librarybelle Great photo! 4mo
Hooked_on_books Oh wonderful! I‘m glad it worked out. The store I found the books in is terrific for Hawaiiana (and apparently Oceania), so I‘m completely delighted! 4mo

#motivationalmonday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) crafting this weekend with girlfriends ❤️🩷💙
2) my little love
3) I love cats and bees (an animal?) but I think I‘d either want to be a songbird or a clumsy panda (because I have “clumsy” down already)
4) tagged

The opening quote of the tagged book

The book is a fictional take on Stevenson and Fannie and their crazy travels. I‘m looking forward to it!

I read this one for #ReadingOceania2024 for #Samoa. This is a coming of age love story and it's both lyrical and challenging to read and understand. Still, you will get so much culture and understanding of the people through their language. #bookspin @librarybelle @BarbaraBB @thearomaofbooks

This book follows the life of Tauilopepe in his Samoan village as he strives to build a great plantation. We see the lives of his son and grandson as well. It‘s terrific and gives an interesting look at Samoan village life. The end is searing.

(That‘s a banyan tree in the background of my pic. 😬)

julesG Samoan life sounds interesting, because it is so far away. I once had the pleasure of spending a few days with people from Oceania and I learned so much about the different islands and their cultures. Banyan trees remind me of Bali. Some of the old ones had red checked sashes wound around them. 7mo
Hooked_on_books @julesG The Oceania reading challenge has been fascinating because the cultures in the region are truly interconnected despite the islands being so far flung. It‘s cool, because it feels like each book builds on the others. I live not far from Hilo in Hawaii, where I took this picture, and there‘s a street there called Banyan Drive, lined with the trees. They are beautiful. 7mo
Librarybelle That is so awesome capturing the banyan tree in the picture! 7mo
