Will Dillard is sent to a summer camp to “cure” his homosexuality. After spending years blocking out those memories he is suddenly forced to confront his past when a fellow camper makes a slasher film based loosely on their time at the camp. I loved this quirky debut novel and am excited that I got to meet Nick White (who was so funny btw!) at the Ohioana Book Festival and will definitely read more from him 😄

A story of #ourlastsummer before WW1
Loved wallowing in this gentle tale set in Rye (near where I‘m from). On the brink of war, the town grapples with social change (by 1918 women in UK gain the right to vote). Loved the wry dialogue and feisty female MC. It‘s a time of bike rides, seaside picnics, a formality of manners and sherry before dinner, all captured so beautifully, you can almost smell the summer blossoms and fresh sea air.

For Lyle and Erik Menéndez, #ourlastsummer in 1989 culminated in the brutal killing of their parents, Jose and Kitty. I admittedly knew little about the case before reading this book, but I‘m saddened now that I‘ve finished it. The empathy I feel for the Menéndez brothers is heightened by the injustice in this case.

Murder is murder, but the horrific abuse the brothers suffered at the hands of their parents is certainly mitigating. #abbainaugust

I read this for my YA Lit class. Considered a classic of sorts for YA Lit, it was originally published in the 1940s. It‘s about a young love that blossoms in the summer. Very chaste, very sweet, very innocent. The edition I read had a slight update, but for the most part, 1940s ideals shine through the book. #OurLastSummer #ABBAinAugust
