pickIt's a toss up which book, this one or The Outsiders, is the first work of YA. This one was written when Daly was still in college and published in 1942. Although I found it slow moving, I also found it full of wistful nostalgia. Anyone who has ever fallen in love as a teen will likely recognize themselves in Angie. The themes are universal.
Finally arrived from the UK, Seventeenth Summer is considered by some to be the first example of YA fiction, although I think it‘s really The Outsiders. I thought I really needed a copy for my classroom library, so I am glad it finally got here.
so-soThis was a hard one for me...
Pros: It doesn‘t seem like it was written in the 40‘s, & the descriptions could be really vivid. It‘s a significant book, as it‘s considered one of the earliest “teen” books.
Cons: I had a hard time relating to the narrator, who hardly spoke throughout the book. I expected angst, but not sections where the boy love interest is talking to her but we rarely see her replies. Just odd.

I read this for my YA Lit class. Considered a classic of sorts for YA Lit, it was originally published in the 1940s. It‘s about a young love that blossoms in the summer. Very chaste, very sweet, very innocent. The edition I read had a slight update, but for the most part, 1940s ideals shine through the book. #OurLastSummer #ABBAinAugust
