How to Survive a Summer
How to Survive a Summer | Nick White
25 posts | 15 read | 39 to read
A debut novel centering around a gay conversion camp in Mississippi, and a man's reckoning with the trauma he faced there as a teen.
Camp Levi nestled in the Mississippi countryside is designed to "cure" young teenage boys of their budding homosexuality. Will Dillard, a Midwestern graduate student, spent a summer at the camp as a teenager, and has since tried to erase that experience from his mind. But when a fellow student alerts him that a slasher movie based on the camp is being released, he is forced to confront his troubled history and possible culpability in the death of a fellow camper.
As past and present are woven together, Will recounts his "rehabilitation," eventually returning to the abandoned campgrounds to solve the mysteries of that pivotal summer, and to reclaim his story from those who have stolen it. With a masterful confluence of sensibility and place, How to Survive a Summerintroduces an exciting new literary voice."

Well this is a interesting story 🤔
It also opened a wound i had sealed away along time a go when my mother found out she had a gay daughter. I liked learning about his story and how honest he was about it.

Will Dillard is sent to a summer camp to “cure” his homosexuality. After spending years blocking out those memories he is suddenly forced to confront his past when a fellow camper makes a slasher film based loosely on their time at the camp. I loved this quirky debut novel and am excited that I got to meet Nick White (who was so funny btw!) at the Ohioana Book Festival and will definitely read more from him 😄

emilyhaldi @Cinfhen this is a hard one to recommend bc it does have its faults- meandering storylines, a twinge of incredulity, etc. but I thought the writing was well done and the story certainly unique! I would suggest #borrownotbuy 😁 6y

So far I'm really enjoying this book I picked up at the Ohioana Book Festival in April! The author was super friendly and fun in person, as evidenced by the promotional drink recipe for his book of short stories 🍹

LeahBergen I thought this one sounded really good. I can‘t wait to hear if you like it (and if you try the cocktail 😆). 6y

Very disappointing. I‘m not sure if it‘s because the author was a first-time novelist or because he was trying to do too much, but the story was all over the place. The characters were not appealing, and in spite of the compelling subject, it was a slog. Finally—and this is going to seem incredibly silly—the main character‘s tendency to get or to be put into situations where his hygiene is compromised was really gross. ⭐️⭐️

emilyhaldi Oh man, what a bummer! I picked this up at the Ohioana Book Festival a couple weeks ago and met the author- he was so charming and funny!!! I really was hoping this would be good 😬 7y

After a exploitative slasher movie comes out based on that summer William Dillard went to a “pray the gay away” camp, years later, William will have to reconcile who he became with who his reverend father, who sent him to that camp, wanted him to be. #FierceFeb #PapaDontPreach

William "Rooster" Dillard just found out that the new movie, Proud Flesh, an exploitation slasher film, is loosely based off events that happened in his youth. When Will was 15, his father, a pastor, sent him to an aversion, "pray the gay away," summer camp. Tragedy strikes during that summer with long reaching consequences. The prose ain't pretty, but it's a good story, dark and worthy of being read. It's a pick!!!

Mehso-so

Probably more like between so-so and pick, honestly. I love what this book is doing and the premise (a young man recounts his time as a teenager at a religious camp designed to "cure" homosexuality and the abuse and tragedy he and other campers endured there) is compelling, but I thought the whole thing didn't *quite* achieve the fullness and sharpness I would have liked. Very glad I read it, and I do recommend.

Reggie I see why you gave it a so-so. The prose ain't that pretty but the story, the tale, was worth it. 7y

A powerful and compelling story about one man's nightmare at a teen conversion camp and how it shapes the rest of his life and he realizes, was shaped by his heritage. I really enjoyed this!

5 boys go to a "homosexual rehabilitation" camp. 4 come home.
Ten years later, Will Dillard's life looks somewhat normal, until a horror movie which twists that summer becomes a cult classic and he goes in search of his past.
Literary and hard to read at points, but good. Full review here: https://rachelmans.wordpress.com/2017/05/25/survive-a-summer/

This was a difficult read. I didn't care for Will as a character, until the end. But the rational part of me knows that we all react to trauma differently, and all of our experiences as queer folk are different. In the end, the truth felt small compared to the build up of secrets and memories, but I was, if not pleased, then at least mostly satisfied. This is a relevant queer story about an underrepresented part of the community.

Bibliogeekery Good review! Thx! #queerbooks 8y

Okay, here we go! So far everything we know is told through the lens of an adult looking back at trauma; everything has been filtered through that lens. I have a feeling this next chapter is going to be brutal.

rachelm ack! How did you get this book, lucky? 8y

I've noticed this dichotomy before; in terms of the struggle, I'm still so young. I came out in the early-mid 90's, and even just a few years makes such a difference. By the time I was a junior in college in 97-98, first years we're coming to campus having been out and active in queer communities for years already. But even my own experiences pale compared to my partner, who came out in the feminist movement of the '70's.

Kerouacthedog When We Rise was such an insightful narrative for me.. For that reason. I knew so little, and had forgotten so much. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree so much! Change seems so slow and the drag forever and then suddenly it's like a light switch snapping over. There's still lots left to fight, and people who still believe in craziness like conversion therapy. But I'm old enough to remember when Ellen first said she was gay as a character on TV and was ostracized...to now have a talk show that's gone on for years where she regularly talks about her real life spouse without any... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... huge media or viewership blowback. It's such a great time and tough time too, if the women's movement of the 70's shows us anything, those anti-segments don't go away or drop off, they tend to reorganize and come back from a different angle later, and just like women's rights, the kids that grew up after the fight aren't quit as vigilant when the rollbacks/retrenching happens... because they feel equal already and have their whole lives. 8y
