The Menendez Murders
The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menendez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation | Robert Rand
4 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Discover the definitive book on the Menendez caseand the source material for NBCs Law and Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders. A successful entertainment executive making $2 million a year. His former beauty queen wife. Their two sons on the fast track to success. Until tragedy struck. Married for twenty-six years, Jos and Kitty Menedez appeared to be a happy couple and proud parents. Twenty-one-year-old Lyle Menendez was enrolled at Princeton where he was a star on the tennis team. Eighteen-year-old Erik Menendez had just graduated from Beverly Hills High and was about to start college at UCLA. The Menendezes appeared to be living the American dream. But it was all a faade. The Menendez saga has captivated and fascinated people since 1989. The killing of Jos and Kitty Menendez on a quiet Sunday evening in Beverly Hills didnt make the cover of People magazine until the arrest of their sons seven months after the murders, and the case developed an intense cult following. When the first Menendez trial began in July 1993, the public was convinced that Lyle and Erikthe boys, as they would become knownwere a pair of greedy rich kids who had killed loving, devoted parents. But the real story remained buried beneath years of dark secrets. Until now. Journalist Robert Rand, who originally reported on the case for the Miami Herald and Playboy, has followed the Menendez murders from the beginning and has continued investigating and interviewing important sources for 28 years. Rand is the only reporter who covered the original investigation as well as both trials. With unprecedented access to the Menendez family and its history, including interviews with both brothers before and after their arrest, Rand has uncovered extraordinary details that certainly would have changed the fate of the brothers first-degree murder conviction and sentencing to life without parole. In The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Inside Story of an American Tragedy, Rand shares these intimate, never-before-revealed findings for the first time, including a deeply disturbing history of child abuse and sexual molestation in the Menendez family going back generations, and the shocking admission O.J. Simpson made to one of the Menendez brothers when they were inmates at the LA County Mens Jail.

I'm too exhausted from lack of sleep to focus on reading my physical books, so audiobook it is! Decided to do a disturbing one.

For Lyle and Erik Menéndez, #ourlastsummer in 1989 culminated in the brutal killing of their parents, Jose and Kitty. I admittedly knew little about the case before reading this book, but I‘m saddened now that I‘ve finished it. The empathy I feel for the Menéndez brothers is heightened by the injustice in this case.

Murder is murder, but the horrific abuse the brothers suffered at the hands of their parents is certainly mitigating. #abbainaugust

Cinfhen Everything I know about this case is curtesy of People Magazine. I remember it was really disturbing 💔 6y
KatieanneF I agree with you- it doesn‘t excuse their crime, but it certainly explains it. This case was brutal from every angle. 6y
Mdargusch I have forgotten so much about this case. 6y

Bostonmomx2 I don‘t know/remember much but is the abuse they claim to have suffered indisputable and proven other than by their claims? 6y
KT1432 I'm adding this one. I've been wanting to learn more about this case, and the abuse aspect reminds me of a true crime novel I read about Jason Bautista killing his mentally ill abusive mother. It made me think a little differently because I went into it disgusted by the crime, but after finishing definitely had empathy for him. 6y
Reviewsbylola That‘s the crux of the issue. The first trial was a hung jury because a lot of them believe that the abuse occurred. The extended Menéndez family also believed the abuse allegations and were supportive of the brothers. New letters surfaced last year written to a cousin by Erik before the murders that also substantiated the abuse. The author of this book, who has been on the case since the day after the murders, also believes the allegations. 6y
Reviewsbylola ⬆️ But then again, obviously the author‘s believes certainly sway the tone of the book. The second trial had a lot less of the family‘s history admitted into court. Many of the jurors have since said that they would not have convicted the brothers of 1st degree murder had they heard the early history that the first juries heard. @Bostonmomx2 6y
Reviewsbylola Exactly @lele1432 I keep telling myself murder is wrong, but if anyone deserves it, it‘s José and Kitty Menéndez. ??‍♀️ 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve just read the synopsis, disturbing.. 6y
emilyhaldi I just went down a google rabbit hole 😅 6y
Reviewsbylola I highly recommend the Getting Off podcast (I believe the Menéndez case starts at episode 86). I‘m listening to it now and it‘s excellent. @emilyhaldi 6y
