The Wives: A Memoir | Simone Gorrindo

Pickpick

“There were just a few weeks left of the deployment. The wives were frustrated and wrung out, and the air had become charged with these emotions.”

Memoir of being an army wife-great writing, authentic characters, unputdownable! Setting is Fort Benning in Georgia in mid 2000s.

I‘m a huge fan of Roach‘s, but I admit that the subject matter is why it was the last one of hers on my TBR… it‘s my least favorite of hers for sure. The humor that I usually chuckle along with falls flat & disrespectfully here. Plus, the research here feels redundant across her other books— from bird strikes & other animal testing like in Fuzz, cadaver handling in Stiff, fabrics & extreme temperatures in Packing for Mars & smells & poo in Gulp!

BkClubCare I have never read her books but probably have ALL on my tbr because of the high praise but the ONE (and now, I can‘t recall which) didn‘t sit well and I have yet to commit! Should I just try her very first? 2d
TorieStorieS @BkClubCare I started with Stiff, and it‘s probably tied for my favorite with Gulp! I read Stiff, but listened to Gulp. Neither are for the squeamish (or for enjoying while eating!)… 2d

More like DES-Didn't Even Start. 4 pages in and nope, not for me.

AmandaBlaze Initially read this as Logan's Run, which is supposed to be a sci-fi classic. 2d
TheBookgeekFrau @AmandaBlaze 😂 When I came across it at the library book sale I thought I scored big time with finding Logan's Run! I'm sure the title is some kind of homage. 2d

Read 2 of the 5 novellas in Lineage. Tamar's story was quite good and compelling, but Rahab's story was hella repetitive, and she kind of reminded me of Lydia from Welcome to Plathville #iykyk However, learning how the Israelites brought down the wall of Jericho was quite interesting.
So time for a break. Moving on to this month's #Bookspin

Sitting on a cruise ship, sobbing. Thank God I finished this on our balcony instead of a public space, I would look like a mess. 5⭐️

Reggie lol, glad you‘re having a good time? 2w

I spent 38 years as a Dept of Army civilian. Military wives were part of neighborhoods, my work environment, my friends, (my mother-in-law). I wasn‘t expecting this book to be insightful for me but it was. The whole enlisted vs officer‘s wife thing - boy, I get it. The kids thing - I get it. But my experiences were never with a community of special ops soldiers and their spouses - what they endure is a unique fraternity/sorority of emotion.

TheBookgeekFrau I recognize that gate! My infantryman daughter emerged with her blue cord 6 years ago ☺️ What a ride it's been! 2w
marleed @TheBookgeekFrau Hey congrats to your daughter! It seemed this book was calling for a Fort Benning gate in the background! 2w
TheBookgeekFrau @marleed Thank you💕 Also, thanks for the memories your background brought up. As crazy a time it was, it was also fun (at least for me and my husband, I'm sure my daughter would beg to differ 😆) 2w

Vietnam was truly a helicopter war - this is an account of a highly decorated chopper pilot, Ron Alexander, and his experiences rescuing injured soldiers from the hostile battlefield in his Huey. I was not fond of the audiobook‘s narrator. It happens
