I‘m surprised I didn‘t read this one in school. I hadn‘t even heard of it until my husband mentioned it. Short, but good.
Finished March 1, 2025.
I debated between giving this book a pick or a so-so. It is an extremely quick read and I did enjoy the end and how it brought everything together. I also enjoyed the setting of a wintry, 19th century Iceland. I was a bit confused by all the characters but the end wrapped it up nicely and the pieces all fall into place. I'm glad I read this book but just feel a little underwhelmed by it. Probably won't stick with me, but it was worth the read.
I listened to this a few months ago and hadn‘t got around to a review.
I had seen the original 1932 film and so knew the “twist” already. Still, I was unprepared for 1.) how short it is & 2.) how well written it is. Possibly one of the best stories from a technical stand point I have ever read. If I recall correctly, though, the ending is where Connell‘s technicality falters, suffering from a rushed and clunky conclusion.
It starts off with young Eric finally getting his hunting license. He's excited about getting to shoot when his parents get sent overseas to fight for their country. Eric is forced to move across the country to live with his grandparents who Eric dislikes. while his grandma was at church and grandpa was out working, a dog came across their yard covered in porcupine quills. Eric takes care of the dog but his grandpa wants her out of the house. 1/2
I could just hear Little Ann and Old Dan howling in the book.
Of course, I did my own howling at the end.
