Erik is preparing for his first-ever hunting trip when he learns that his parents are being deployed to Iraq. A few days later, Erik is shipped off to North Dakota to live with Big Darrell and Oma, grandparents he barely knows. When Erik rescues a dog that's been stuck by a porcupine, Big Darrell says Erik can't keep him. But Erik has already named her Quill and can't bear to give her up. He decides to run away, taking the dog and a shotgun, certain that they can make it on their own out on the prairie. In this story of adventure and survival, Erik learns about the challenges and satisfactions of living off the land, the power of family secrets, and the pain of losing what you love.

It starts off with young Eric finally getting his hunting license. He's excited about getting to shoot when his parents get sent overseas to fight for their country. Eric is forced to move across the country to live with his grandparents who Eric dislikes. while his grandma was at church and grandpa was out working, a dog came across their yard covered in porcupine quills. Eric takes care of the dog but his grandpa wants her out of the house. 1/2

Regan.Weenk While his grandparents are out again, he heads out to the prairies with his dog to “live like the pioneers.“ This five-day adventure was full of learning experiences, but eventually, he heads home and is reunited with his grandparents, who are a lot more welcoming than before. This book is hard to picture in your head. The setting is just an old house and lots of flat prairie land, and it's a slower, thoughtful story. 2w

I'm about half way through the book and its a very interesting book. It starts with a lot happening really quick. The book is a 1st person perspective from the main character, Eric. it starts off with Eric getting his hunters license to shoot birds. hes super excited about it, he is about to go hunting that weekend when his parents are called to go over seas to fight for their country. He has to go live with his grandparents. Go to comments.vvvv

When Eric gets up the next morning his Grandpa (Big Darrel) already left and his Oma is leaving for church. while he\'s home alone a dog wanders into their yard covered in porcupine quills. After they call the vet Eric tries to convince Big Darrel to let them keep it because they know the owners going to kill the dog for running out again. So Eric and the dog escape into the wild 1mo

When Erik‘s parents are called to Iraq he must leave his home in upstate New York for his grandparents‘ home in North Dakota. Erik hardly remembers his grandparents, and in his unhappiness he soon decides to run away taking a rifle and a hunting dog with him.

How long can Erik survive on his own, and what will his family do without him?

Dogearedcopy We did #OBOB for four years! In our school district, the competition is fierce (two days of intramural competitions to determine school‘s representative team!) I‘m sad though that at the high school level there‘s little interest or support 😔 7y

Feeling the need to show some dog love on litsy tonight! Reading Wild Life at the request and recommendation of my 11 year old son. Can't wait for our bookclub "date" to discuss. I stayed up too late last night getting in to his book and I'm thinking I'll be finishing it tonight. I'm loving imagining my son reading this.
