It may seem a little far fetched, but this period drama/historical novel with time travel, magic stones, love and (a bit) gore really won me over!

So glad I persevered after the slump in the middle!

mellissimo Good to hear. I'm somewhere close to the middle of the book myself and I'm having a hard time trying to convince me to go on. Good to know that it will get better again :) 6y

It is nearly the end of January, and my first book of 2019 is complete.

The writing was beautiful, but I never felt personally invested in the characters and the story didn‘t seem to go anywhere. The way the author covers racial injustice, isolation of the characters, and the depiction of music is stunning. However this isn‘t a book I would choose to come back to in the future.

Tamra I didn‘t connect either and so bailed. 6y

A nice, quiet novel. I didn‘t love every character or every plot point but overall I liked the setting and how it focused on one event. #firstbookof2019

Loved this book. It was along the same lines of The Little Prince- which I also love. I really liked all of the interesting twists and turns in the shepherd‘s life. #firstbookof2019

#FirstBookOf2019 is done!🎉 What a fantastic book. Erik Larson is a master storyteller, without using glossy pictures or diagrams, he takes what could‘ve been dry facts and turned it into one of the most interesting & enthralling reads I‘ve had the pleasure of coming across in awhile.🚢Highly recommended 5⭐️ Can‘t wait to get my copy of his The Devil In The White City.

Mdargusch I loved this book too! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds Devil in the White City is brilliant, worth a wait/ effort! 😊 6y

Over meh book. Loved learning about Australia but this book is now 20 years old so a bit out of date. At least it‘s now off my TBR shelf! 🇦🇺 #reading #firstbookof2019 #tbr #ilovelearning

AileenRR I love Simon (ha!) SO MUCH! The book and movie were my fall 2018 obsessions. I don‘t love the voice of the book narrator though. Much prefer the voice of movie Simon. What do you think? 6y
