Question of the Day: What underhyped book should more people read? #QotD

As a side note, I've been doing these daily questions for almost a month straight. Let me know if you enjoy them and want me to keep doing them.⁣

Don't forget to tag me in your replies!

BookishMarginalia You go, girl! I don‘t have one particular book, but in general, I think #picturebook nonfiction should be more widely read — it‘s a great way to build background knowledge, not just for kids. 3y
kathytrithardt Picture books are great, @BookishMarginalia 😊 3y

Okay, so this is my new #currentlyreading for today's #augustphotochallenge #augustofpages. Looking forward to this quick glimpse into Auri's life, a unique character from his Kingkiller Chronicles.

I may also plug this author as my #underhypedbooks for yesterday. All should read Rothfuss. I'm not even a fan of fantasy, and I love him and Scott Lynch, author of the Gentleman Bastards Series. Both stellar reads!

@TheSpinecrackersBookClub

Chessa Agree 100% about Rothfuss and Lynch! Soooo good. 8y
StellaDz @Chessa 👍👍 I eagerly await all of their novels! They are amazing and beautiful! 8y
Merethebookgal Yes, Rothfuss and Lynch are 💯 8y
StellaDz @Merethebookgal they are def faves! 8y

#underhypedbooks. Yes, it's a hilarious coming of age, but the writing. Lubar plays around with literary devices and dances with wordplay. Under hyped? If you haven't read it, then, yes it was. What are you waiting for? This one makes you laugh while tugging at your heart. I wanted to stalk David after reading this, I loved it so much. 😳. But I didn't! (But I wanted to.) 😉 {I couldn't blur anything out cuz it's all good.} 😀

Laalaleighh This looks interesting! Stacking 📚 8y
CyranoseDeBergerac Sounds spectacular! That's quite the start. 😆 8y

#underhypedbooks Probably my favorite book about the AT or trail hiking in general. Davis takes on the feminine version of Odysseus as she hikes the trail alone with very minimal help. Definitely an inspirational book and frequently goes on sale on Kindle. Cool fact: on a later hike, she sets the women's speed record on the AT. 👏🏻👏🏻 #Augustphotochallenge #augustofpages

Amputateddad I just started Braving it , you might like this book also 8y
Amputateddad It's by James Campbell 8y
Megabooks @Amputateddad It's on my TBR! 😃 8y
Amputateddad Wild by Cheryl Strayed is another good book 8y

Poison Study | Maria V. Snyder

Pickpick

One of my favorite #underhypedbooks is the YA fantasy. I'm not generally a YA reader, but I loved the audiobook version. Yelena has a choice: either die or become the taster for the King. Her process of learning poisons and the ways she utilizes the knowledge are fascinating.

I've been meaning to read the rest of the series too!

#augustphotochallenge

Dragon Second that. Love this book 8y
Chessa This was a really fun book! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Dragon @Chessa I want to read the others in the series, and I'm not sad to say I have to reread this one first. 8y

Chessa I liked the others, but this was my fave by far. 8y
Bookworm54 @Chessa The others were great, but poison study is definitely my fave too. I am super excited about the new trilogy though as it was nice to go back to the original characters after the glass trilogy! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Chessa @Bookworm54 I already own three of them, so I'm sure I'll read all of them. I think I have another of hers as well. 8y
Bookworm54 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Great! She has a healer series which is on a similar line to the study series, and then a sci-fi duology. Those were very different, but I really enjoyed them :) 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Bookworm54 I've got the first of the healer series! 8y
Dragon Thanks @Bookworm54 and @BarbaraTheBibliophage I will have to check those two series out 8y

I struggled with this one - apparently I tend towards the hyped, LOL. And another case of the book thief, caught in action. Toddlers. The worst. #underhypedbooks #day26 #augustphotochallenge

The Jade Peony | Wayson Choy
post image

A writer I like very very much who I would consider to be underhyped is Wayson Choy, a gay Chinese Canadian novelist and memoirist, now pushing 80, whose books have never gotten the attention they so richly deserve--especially outside of Canada. I would suggest starting with The Jade Peony (a tender, meditative, coming-of-age novel set in WWII-era Vancouver) and going from there.

BookishFeminist Great choice! I need to read her stuff. 8y
Lindy I second that! Choy's writing reflects his huge heart. 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I hope you enjoy HIS writing :-) 8y

DreesReads I just requested it from the library! I've been letting my queue run down (intentionally) and after a couple of disappointing reads I need something random to me. 8y
shawnmooney @AudreyMorris Sweet! I hope it's a book-slump-ending read for ya! 8y
Dragon Wayson Choy gave a great talk at the Chinatown Lioness banquet . He was so interesting and charming 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney OMG sorry! I promise that was a typo. 😳 I've seen you post a book of his before and knew this. Good lord, maybe I need to start switching it up a little more and read more male writers again! LOL 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist Ha ha - no worries, and certainly no offense taken. Old queen that he is, Wayson Choy would probably cackle at the pronoun switch! 8y
LeahBergen Omg! I was going to choose The Jade Peony today, too! I've read all of these and love him. I've been to a few readings of his and he signs with beautiful calligraphic flowers and such. ❤️ 8y
Bibliogeekery Love Wayson Choy! 8y
Sue Thank you - added to my TBR! 8y

The Blue Castle | L. M. Montgomery
post image
Pickpick

One of my favorite #underhypedbooks is this lesser-known L.M. Montgomery (pictured with her under-hyped Emily series- Anne gets all the glory!). I love this book so much. "Old maid" Valancy (I think she's 29 ?) gets a terminal diagnosis and it inspires her to go out and LIVE. She starts saying all those things she's always wanted to say and finally breaks away from her overbearing family's stifling expectations. ???#augustphotochallenge #day26

Eyelit I almost chose this as well! The book I did chose shares a few similarities with Blue Castle. 8y
Eyelit *choose 8y
BarbaraJean @Eyelit 👍 I love your choice as well! Possession was so good. It was so convincingly written that I remember looking up the two poets because it seemed like they *must* 8y

BarbaraJean Accidental send and no edit button... Must have been actual Victorian writers, was where I was going with that! 8y
Eyelit It was Lolly Willowes that I chose for the underhyped book 😃 8y
BarbaraJean @Eyelit Ha! I guess I was looking at your #funfridayphoto! Too many photo challenges. 😊 I wondered what the connection with Blue Castle was... annnnd, it wasn't there because I was looking at the wrong post. 😜 I'll have to check out Lolly Willowes! 8y

I read The Accursed Kings in Hungarian a long time ago. It is mindblowing - the intrigue, the action, the incredible research. It is fascinating that the 100 years war was ultimately the result of a Queen's infidelity... When I came to the US, I found they were not even translated! Now they are - George R.R.Martin endorsed the series as "the original Game of Thrones".

He is wrong. It is better.

coffeenebula Oooooh! Looks intriguing. ⚔📚👑 8y
Gezemice @tanya42 Highly recommend it if you like historical fiction or intrigue. 8y

Gezemice @LauraBrook That's awesome! Enjoy it! 8y
BookishFeminist So true! I read the first one in its original French and I need to get ahold of the others. SO GOOD. 8y
kammartinez Martin derived so much of his inspiration for characters and plot points in A Song of Ice and Fire from the events of the 100 Years' War. If you squint sideways at the Lannisters and Tyrells long enough, for instance, you begin to see certain parallels to important historical figures during that particular period in history ;D. 8y
LeahBergen On my shelf! 8y
Gezemice @kammartinez I was thinking he also used the war of the roses. Lancaster=Lannister; York=Stark. Tyrells: rose... Both wars had so much dynastic intrigue and feud, I can definitely see the inspiration. Although neither had dragons. ;) 8y
Gezemice @BookishFeminist Oh I am now jealous that you can read French. I wish! :) But now they are available here, that's the good thing. 8y
The_Literary_Jedi I have been looking for these for a couple of years, even requested my library to buy them but haven't been able to find new editions! Once I have funds, these are certainly on my to buy list 8y
Gezemice @The_Literary_Jedi Amazon has them. Good luck! 8y

Because poetry is rarely hyped at all, I present two lovely Canadian poets, Lorna Crozier and Kathleen Wall. (And my chameleon puppy, Sansa, doing her best impression of a pillow with eyes.) #NationalDogDay #augustphotochallenge #underhypedbooks @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
