We Are Not Like Them | Christine Pride

Mehso-so

Two friends, one black one white, explore the complexities of their friendship and social injustice after a black boy was killed by the police. Written by a black and a white author I was very interested in how they would tackle these subjects. The result fell short to me, to be honest. The book checked off all the points of a “how not to be racist” list but it lacked depth and authenticity. Their friendship felt a bit unreal and immature. ⬇️

BarbaraBB Yet I enjoyed reading the different perspectives and Kevin‘s letter in the end. Thanks for sending me this book Cindy 💕 1y
squirrelbrain I gave this a pick but I agree that there were some issues with it. 1y

Cinfhen I think I gave it a pick too @squirrelbrain but I think you‘re right, B. This book lacked some depth. Glad you picked it up, though. GD, remember when I was able to send you books no problem 😉 1y
Tamra Shoot, the premise is a good one to explore! I wish it had worked better. 1y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Those were the days 😉 but I still have hope for the current one 🤞🏽🤞🏽 1y
Librarybelle That‘s a shame! 1y

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls | Elena Favilli, Francesca Cavallo

Pickpick

I 💜 that there are books like this for my daughter! (Her LEGO set features 2 women in the book!)

Filled with daring women (not all of whom I like or agreed with, but they are/were still extraordinary and powerful in their own right...ahem Margaret Thatcher), I like the diversity, both of profession and culture. There are pirates, dancers, athletes, scientists, politicians, activists, and more!

TrishB We‘ll just ahem....cough past Thatcher..... 6y

Simona Just yesterday, I bought this book for my friend's ten-year daughter, and with it you can buy a fruit tea with the name-Tea for rebel girls. I hope that she will like my gift🤞 6y

Spending some time doing what I love before getting ready for work. ☺️ I got my free Starbucks drink this morning and I‘m tearing through this book for #LMPBC. It‘s a Reese‘s book club pick and I couldn‘t put it down last night. #ibelieveinathingcalledlove (although apparently Amber doesn‘t. 😂😂 If you‘ve read the book, you get what I‘m saying.) #getmovin

Cinfhen I‘m surprised you‘re loving this one! Glad to hear it‘s good...another library request 😉 7y
Reviewsbylola I‘m actually surprised too. Thrillers have not been my thing lately. It‘s so compulsively readable though. @Cinfhen 7y
Cinfhen Reese can usually pick them! It‘ll work for #pop18 #celebritybookclub 7y

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society | Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer

Dear @LeeRHarry ,
Thank you for gifting me with this charming gem of a book. It‘s got just about everything; history, romance, intrigue, war, friendship and oodles of warmth. Now I know why it‘s so loved. Just sad that Mary Ann Shaffer wasn‘t alive to see it published. I love what her niece wrote in the afterward “We are transformed - magically- into the literary society each time we pass a book along...” So true❣️❣️❣️
Thanks again,
Cindy

Bronte_Chintz I loved this book! 7y

Centique I‘m so glad you like it too 👍 7y
Cinfhen It seems like it would be a magical place @Mdargusch 😀it‘s a sweet read with some really heavy WWII undertones that I think you‘d appreciate @Wanderingwithwords and @DebinHawaii YOU could bake Potato Peel Pie!!!!! I did really enjoy this one @Centique 7y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Does it involve making crust? I don't make crust.😆 7y
Cinfhen Actually @DebinHawaii they used the potato peels as the crust because it was wartime and there was no flour or eggs!!! So I was hoping u would improvise and create your own dish😜😉😘😘 7y
KarenUK Isn‘t it great... it was a book club read for me a few years ago... Loved it! 💕 7y

Needed something a bit more light hearted after the last few books I've read so I'm attempting to have more than one book on the go at a time. Starting this today for the Popsugar prompt 'A book by two authors'.

Survivors Club: The True Story of a Very Young Prisoner of Auschwitz | Michael Bornstein, Debbie Bornstein Holinstat

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: What a powerful account of the Holocaust. Michael Bornstein was the youngest person to walk out of Auschwitz alive. My heart breaks knowing the the very last of these survivors are alive. Geared towards young adult, this is a story that will be burned into my mind. #YoungAdult #Memoir #NF #Holocaust #TwoAuthors #NeverForget

Started a new audio book this morning. I think this fits the #nordicnoir prompt for the #PopSugar reading challenge. It would also fit for #twoauthors but I have something else planned for that one. #Pop18 #popsugar2018 #PopSugarReadingChallenge

ferskner I love this series! 7y
MissAimz_55 I just added this to my list for Nordic noir! 7y
Valink @ferskner - I didn‘t realize this was part of a series! 7y
Valink @MissAimz_55 - there are quite a few characters that get introduced early on & I found that a bit confusing, but I think I have everyone straight now. I‘m enjoying it so far! 7y
ferskner Yes! I think there are only four, so it's not too overwhelming. 7y

More thought provoking and eerie than horrifying, I really liked the Twilight Zone feel of this novella. Stephen King always surprises me with the quality of his books (although don't ask me to ever attempt The Stand again. Ugh.) #pop18 #twoauthors
