Survivors Club: The True Story of a Very Young Prisoner of Auschwitz
Survivors Club: The True Story of a Very Young Prisoner of Auschwitz | Michael Bornstein, Debbie Bornstein Holinstat
5 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
In 1945, in a now-famous piece of World War II archival footage, four-year-old Michael Bornstein was filmed by Soviet soldiers as he was carried out of Auschwitz in his grandmother's arms. Survivors Club tells the unforgettable story of how a father's courageous wit, a mother's fierce love, and one perfectly timed illness saved his life, and how others in his family from Zarki, Poland, dodged death at the hands of the Nazis time and again with incredible deftness. Working from his own recollections as well as extensive interviews with relatives and survivors who knew the family, Michael relates his inspirational Holocaust survival story with the help of his daughter, Debbie Bornstein Holinstat. Shocking, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting, this narrative nonfiction offers an indelible depiction of what happened to one Polish village in the wake of the German invasion in 1939.

I forgot to post this and deleted the picture. Anywho, I've mostly steered away from Holocaust related books because I feel like I know enough. I got this as an ARC years ago, though, and decided to finally read it. I had to remind myself that a lot of it was anecdotal as the author was a very young child during the war, which speaks to how engaging the writing is. Definitely worth checking out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: What a powerful account of the Holocaust. Michael Bornstein was the youngest person to walk out of Auschwitz alive. My heart breaks knowing the the very last of these survivors are alive. Geared towards young adult, this is a story that will be burned into my mind. #YoungAdult #Memoir #NF #Holocaust #TwoAuthors #NeverForget

Started this one late last night and from the start I couldn't put it down. I finished it today.
Every time I read a Holocaust story I am amazed at it all. Amazed at the level of hate from one human being to another, the amount of pain and loss one can endure and survive. I simply cannot wrap my brain around how such atrocities were allowed and carried through.

Definitely not a cheery story, but a very interesting and important one. The author is the young boy in the bottom right of the cover photo who survived Auschwitz as a four year old. He is finally telling his story with the help of his daughter.

Not sure I am going to make it all the way through this traumatic yet inspiring read. It's important that these stories are heard. The writing is dispassionate yet powerful. #holocaustmemorialday #reminder
