I didn‘t LOVE this, mostly because classical lit isn‘t my thing, but the audio was pretty enjoyable. I really appreciated Wilson‘s thorough introduction and translator‘s note as it gave me a way to ground myself and have things to look for in this SUPER long poem. Glad I read it, but probably wouldn‘t pick it up again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
+21 for #teamreadnosedreindeer and my last book for #readharder20 the first year I finished the challenge!!

The Woman Warrior: China Men | Maxine Hong Kingston
Pickpick

What a clever way to write one's memoirs. Kingston wrapped Chinese traditions, superstitions, and legends around her childhood. She starts by telling the story of Mu Lan and how her mother becomes a woman warrior herself by becoming a doctor educated by Eastern and Western medicine. By the end, she is confused about what is true and what is a story and decides to visit China to gain deeper knowledge. I will definitely read more by Kingston.

This book has so much...
*A neurodiverse character who identifies as a genderqueer
*A doctor who identifies as transgender
*A generational ship that is divided by race and each race has certain jobs/shifts
*Dictator who plays god - leads topdeckers into dehumanizing and degrading the bottom deckers
*A rebellion

And it was BRILLIANT!

"All she wished for was perfunctory respect paid to the fact that she was, indeed, alive."

What an incredible piece of literature. This will probably be in my top 5 of 2020. A story of a hard-working family who gets knocked down over and over. But they have hope. And, they have pride. I'm exhausted with all the feelings.

Butterfinger You and I are kindred spirits. I am doing #NWC, #ReadHarder20 #Booked2020 #ChildrensClassicRead2020 #ReadingEurope2020 #classicschallenge2020 #PopSugar20 #mandmchallenge2020 #ReadwithMrBook USReads and CenturyReads

My favorite thing to do is find several prompts of different challenges for each challenge.

bibliobliss @Butterfinger We DO have some challenges in common!! Glad to "meet" you in the NWC group. It's always great to check off boxes for several challenges. Good luck and check in with me as often as you like!! 5y

bibliobliss @MissAimz_55 Exactly 😉 5y
Geenie How do you sign up for these or find them? 5y
bibliobliss @Yoshi-and-a-book All the challenges here are floating around on Litsy. They all have their own hashtags and can be located in the search function via hashtag. You don't have to sign up for most of these, you just find one you'd like to try and join in. Find the original post, take a screenshot and post on your profile. The only ones I "signed up" for are the #LitsyAtoZ and #NWC #NovelWatchingCrew (which I also found on Litsy and joined the group) 5y
Geenie Thanks so much! @Readage the challenges are so cool 😎 5y

First third was her autobiography. She wrote so exquisitely about her life on a Sioux reservation and her life in an Eastern school.

Second third were essays that Zitkala-Sa wrote to Congress on the deplorable conditions of the American people. She continued her white education to fight the white man. Admirable!! Heroic!!

Stories of the people were included in the finale. They reminded me of Kipling's Just So Stories+Jack Tales of Appalachia

I love the characters. I love all the love interests. I love the fighting. My favorite character in this world (Magnus Bane 🤩😍) was not in the action much due to the warlocks becoming sick from the blight. I need another book that is only focused on Magnus, Alex, and their family. Please and thank you Ms. Clare.

I feel as if I walked into my Nanny's kitchen and she turns and grabs me and says, "Tammy Lynn, I shore have missed you. Sit down so I can feed you" while George or Pete is digging into the flesh of my shins because he's missed me too.

My Nanny died 2 months ago. I was afraid it would be too painful to read. It wasn't. It was calming and soothing as being in Nanny's kitchen used to be. Thank you Nanny for Montgomery and Alcott and your love.
