This book reminded me of all the beautiful and heartbreaking stories my Palestinian friend Laila told me in college.

Anaële is a Belgian volunteer worker in Palestine for 9 months. Her sister, Delphine, who was in Belgium, illustrated their correspondence for this epistolary graphic memoir.

(Anecdote: Laila is now a cookbook author and was on Bourdain‘s Parts Unknown Palestine episode. Link below ⬇️)

Librarybelle Another graphic novel I may have to try. 😁 4y

Help Littens! This is the reading list for my son‘s summer class (he‘s 14). He has to choose one...I‘ve only read #All the Light We Cannot See and liked it but I‘m thinking he may not love it. What do you recommend from this list? He loves history but typically reads fantasy. He‘s a strong reader so no worry there. I‘ve been wanting to read #Night so debated that one and reading it together. Also considering #Persepolis. Any other votes? Thanks!

Bradleygirl HMMM - i'm not the best to ask since i haven't read them all, but. I can *highly* recommend Maus, as something both easy to read (a graphic novel/comic) and entirely immersive, about the Holocaust. Like. I wouldn't honestly give it to a 14-year-old (it was in my freshman college class) but, it's very very good. Also a true story, which may have some weight. 4y
LibrarianRyan I would probably suggest Code Name Verity as my #1 choice and then Orphan monster spy as my second. Both graphic novels are excellent but may be a bit of a bore to a 14 year old. I love Maus and the story it tells, but it's a son telling you they story of his father while also dealing with his father aging. 4y
wordslinger42 Both Maus and Night are extremely good (though, I have to admit, seem a bit much for that age. I didn't read either until I was in college). I'm not familiar with the others, so I can't help with those! 4y

vlwelser None of these really scream 14yo boy. Maybe Night or Maus would be my suggestions. 4y
Bookgirl @Bradleygirl @wordslinger42 @vlwelser It‘s an advanced English course he placed into. I can see they are starting them off hardcore in terms of topics as I‘m pretty sure these are all books about war. Thanks for the insights! 4y
Bookgirl @LibrarianRyan Thanks, that‘s one I‘m not familiar with so I‘ll check it out! 4y
TEArificbooks I loved All the Light You Cannot See. As it is about a blind kid his age he may like it. Guernsy is excellent about how a group of people formed a book club to help them get through the war while their island was occupied by Germans. It is written all in letters from the characters to each other which makes it a quick read. And it is a movie on Netflix. 4y
TEArificbooks Salt to the Sea is a fantastic YA novel about 3 kids in Germany during WW2. They are fleeing the country as soon as it is clear Germany lost. And it ends with the worse maritime disaster in history - worse than the Titanic. You don‘t here about it in history class because it was the Germans boats. There is lots of suspense as they flee. He may like it. 4y
Bookgirl @mdm139 awesome, thanks for the tips! 4y
Bookgirl Interesting...Ophelia is apparently the tale of her in Hamlet from her perspective. It seems out of place here 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
Bookzombie I second @LibrarianRyan on Code Name Verity. I haven‘t read Salt to the Sea yet, but I read another by that author and suspect Salt would be a good choice too. 4y

A collaborative travel memoir in #comics format, composed of letters between two Belgian sisters, one of whom stays home in Liege while the other volunteers for 10 months in Palestine in 2008. If you‘re looking for something lighter in tone than Joe Sacco‘s work, try this. #translation #graphicnovel #nonfiction

My neighbourhood is a little particular; it‘s near Rachel‘s tomb. The Israelis decided to annex the tomb and build a military base out of it. A wall surrounds the tomb and Palestinians aren‘t allowed inside. So, there‘s a house near me with walls on three of its sides.

Anaële Hermans traveled from her home in Belgium to Palestine to volunteer with an aid organization. During that time she exchanged letters with her sister Delphine back home. Green Almonds brings these letters to life as a graphic novel.

I definitely recommend it, especially for people who like memoir, travel writing, and social justice issues.

Overall Verdict : Go for it.
It's an amazing travelogue between two sisters. I found the concept really interesting. Its a must read. It leaves one sentient about Palestine in a remarkable way. There are some issues in places. I felt some broken links are their and somethings are omitted to keep the focus on what's going on in Palestine. Overall, it is great. The moment I started reading it, I could not put it down.

This travelogue is set up as letters between Anaële, a volunteer in an aid program in Palestine, and her sister Delphine in Belgium. I enjoyed Delphine's artwork, but I wish the narrative was Anaële's alone. Delphine's postcards are clunky, out of place, and interrupt the flow. They're sometimes shockingly dismissive of the intense things Anaële shares. This is worth reading just to view Palestine through Anaële's caring, thoughtful eyes.

I found the Persepolis movie at the library and have been meaning to read the book for years. So I finally dusted off my unread copy and it was as good as everyone says! She expresses so much with so little embellishment. It was an artistic inspiration.

Tonight I'm hoping to watch the movie.

TricksyTails How is Mr. Ziggy doing today? 7y
SkeletonKey @TricksyTails - He's a bit slow and tentative but otherwise nearly back to normal and healing well :) Getting way too accustomed to heated fancy food three times a day though 😂 He'll be mad when that stops. 7y
SkeletonKey @TricksyTails - Thanks for asking!! 7y
