I found my way to this book via a post by the #shesaid group. I have to say, what a wonderful choice! I am so in love with this book already, and it is exactly what I needed right now. It even ties into How to Think Like a Woman with a wonderful discussion of Mary Wollstonecraft‘s horrific death.

@TheBookHippie @ravenlee @JaclynW @RavenLovelyReads @AlaSkaat @Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll @bnp turns out Mary Wollstonecraft died because the doctor attending her birth didn‘t wash his hands before shoving his hand inside of her to remove her amniotic sack. 🙄 He probably couldn‘t be bothered to wait for her to expel it naturally.
3mo
GingerAntics He probably wanted to hurry back to the autopsy he‘d abandoned to attend the birth. 🙄 I just don‘t see how that wasn‘t even gross. I can‘t imagine touching blood and NOT washing my hands. I mean, gross. @TheBookHippie (edited) 3mo
AlaSkaat Just recently found out I am pregnant. This creeps me out !! Unbelievable. 3mo

AlaSkaat Far behind reading the book, but I‘m here just in the background lurking 😂 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat right? Like, gross bro! Don‘t touch me, let alone my new born, without washing your hands and putting on gloves. Just, no! Luckily, you are alive today and gloves + sterilising surfaces and hands will be a thing! So, some good news. 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat well, you have a great reason! 🧡🧡🧡 3mo
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics Yeah, but just the thought of it! Horrifying. The fact it wouldn‘t occur to someone to wash their hands before going INSIDE someone is just crazy. Now or then!! 3mo
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics For sure! And soon use it as the excuse to just sit and read books instead! 😂🙏 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat right? I don‘t like having things on my hands, even lotion. So I just can‘t imagine having blood and god knows what on your hands and just touching other people and just everything. EW!!!! 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! 3mo
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics oh yeah, for sure. It seems common knowledge to have good hygiene, it‘s really hard to understand how people back in the day just knew absolutely nothing about it and it amounted to so many deaths before they figured it out 3mo
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics What‘s the next book that‘s on your guys list? Have you guys chose anything? 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat right? They literally locked up the first doctor that even showed PROOF that washing hands saved mothers and babies. They were hell bent that washing was evil… even with actual proof. 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat not sure. Maybe Determined. Our group could have a wonderful discussion of free will and if it‘s real or imagined. 3mo
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics Lol. People believed in a man in the sky with no proof, but then a woman cures her mother with a green plant from her garden and she‘s a witch!! 😂 I feel this mentality didn‘t really get lost, it just moved onto different things nowadays 😅 3mo
AlaSkaat Oh, free will sounds interesting! It always baffled me the idea it could be either way and which one is better!! 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat that‘s so true. Now women tend to be written off as “new age crazies” when they find things to help themselves or the women in their lives that aren‘t modern medicine. 3mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat I feel like free will is one of those things that we often take for granted, it‘s so much a part of our lives, politics, everything. To even entertain the idea that it‘s all made up is mind bending. I feel like there is a combination of real and not real to it. 3mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics still happens today. I‘ve lost two teen moms this way. 3mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie from doctor‘s not cleaning their hands?! 3mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Yup. The only way it would happen. Especially the one case. Strep A in bloodstream from cut or tear in delivery… I watched the doctor and she had no glove on, I questioned her… and she was irate. So sad. (edited) 3mo
kspenmoll I just saw this- seems like a must read for me! No glove?!!! OMG !!! This decade! @TheBookHippie (edited) 3mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie she was irate?! If I was that mother I would tell her to put a glove on or I would sue her if she touched me again. Gross 3mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics the mother was 14. 3mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll young pregnant girls have zero value. Especially if they are not white. 3mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that is truly disgusting… never mind it‘s basically malpractice at this point. 3mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics welcome to my screaming into the VOID. I did 28 years volunteer doula for teens. Now I just give advice and direction to the current doulas when asked. 3mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh my god, I cannot imagine being the doula in that situation and being like “don‘t get an attitude with me. I will help this kid file a malpractice suit on you.” Abortion bans are all about the kids, but once they‘re born this country does not give a shit about them. 3mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics abortion bans are about control. I was well known for my mouth, most of the time I could protect them but the treatment they received was just wrong on so many levels. 3mo

Got 1/3 of the way through on my 2nd attempt. I'm just not following her arguments. Probably my fault.

Excited to start my day with this novel about Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter, Mary Shelley. #TBR #historicalfiction #cofffeeandbooks
I have read & studied both women‘s works and am fascinated with their courage to publish their ideas that were way beyond the thinking of the times they lived in. Both actively read today. #20in4 #readathon

Suet624 I love all the colors! So joyful. 13mo

Not for me. Disappointing as I really wanted to like this book. Truly. It was just too ambitious a task. Writing a novel from the POV of two incredibly accomplished and renowned writers, Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley, you must emulate their style and voice. That‘s where this book fails for me. It‘s not convincing. The language is remarkably ordinary. Thornton quotes MW and MWS often but it just highlights the inadequacy of the writing.

SamAnne Uh, unstacked! 2y
Cuilin @SamAnne I honestly was frustrated when reading it. Luckily I borrowed it on Libby! 2y

A novel about Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Godwin/Shelley. I‘ve always been fascinated by these two and the lives they led. And with Shelley too- the painting above (funeral of Shelley)has had me completely mesmerised since I saw it on a school trip aged 9. I go and look at it often still it‘s amazing in ‘real life‘.
These 2 feminists really broke society‘s rules and often paid the price.

squirrelbrain This is on the @camplitsy long list, nominated by @jenniferw88 2y
TrishB @squirrelbrain I just had to read now! You know how it is 😁 2y

TrishB @Cathythoughts @Suet624 it‘s amazing in its full glory! 2y
TrishB @LeahBergen they blow my mind every time I read about them ♥️ 2y
CarolynM I‘ve not seen that painting before -I‘d always pictured Shelley‘s pyre a lot higher than that 🤔😆 Book sounds good. Stacked 2y
TrishB @CarolynM picture in Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and yes agreed- I think it‘s artistic licence and so you can see all the detail! 2y
Bookwomble @CarolynM @TrishB I went to the Walker a couple of months ago and likewise thought there'd be a good deal of Shelly left after that pyre burned out. More of a barbeque, really! 🥓 2y

Pickpick

Okay, I just panned a book for 2023 perspectives baked into 1863 characters. Interesting this was my next read because everything in the writing worked. These Mary‘s were bad ass! Mary Shelly is a gift to the literary world, and the mother she never knew - Mary Wollstonecraft was even more ahead of her time. Even with both timelines told in first person narrative, I believed the words and thoughts described this IRL mother-daughter pair.

dabbe I always had my students read an excerpt from Wollstonecraft before we read FRANKENSTEIN. The girl students LOVED her and considered her the first literary woman #badasss, which is just what I wanted before seeing a TEENAGER write what many consider the first science fiction novel! Sigh. If I could just teach and not have to deal with ANYTHING else, I'd still be in the classroom. Who wouldn't? 🤣💚🤗 2y
marleed @dabbe oh How I wish teacher‘s who just want to teach could just teach! 2y
dabbe @marleed Almost 2 years of retirement and I STILL have nightmares over some parents, ridiculous meetings and too much testing, and about not getting my grades in on time! 🤣 2y
marleed @dabbe I‘m glad you were able to retire. Teaching deserves so much more respect and pay than it gets. 2y
