Two boys, Pietro the city boy from Milan and Bruno a country boy, become lifelong friends in the mountains of #Italy. Pietro has a complicated relationship with his father, and as adults Bruno develops a much better relationship with Pietro‘s father, creating an unusual but ultimately a stronger bond between Pietro and Bruno following the father‘s death, even when Pietro moves away to #Nepal. A slow, contemplative book in the shadow of the ⬇️

My kind of book; a family epic. A rags to riches tale set in Sicily during Napoleon's time and the following revolution. I loved the imagery of the surrounding sea and town and the determination of the men in the family and the stubbornness of the women in their anger and love.

My only regret is that I realized halfway through the book that the Bourbons and the Neapolitans were the same people.

+ I enjoyed reading the family scenes
+ Description of Venice was fabulous
+ I liked Commissario Brunetti and his interactions with the other characters (his children, suspects, his boss)

- I vehemently disliked the public prejudice of lgbtq. It implies a mother, identified as lesbian, could lose custody of her children
- (TW) child abuse
- Translation at times was confusing.

I love Italian cuisine. Especially pasta. My favourite is spaghetti. I eat them all the time, not only in winter. These are with tomatoes and ricotta.
