5 Stars • Two words told me this was the book for me. #Romanov #JohnBoyne

"The House of Special Purpose" by John Boyne is a historical novel that intertwines the personal story of protagonist Georgy Jachmenev with the tumultuous backdrop of the Russian Revolution. Set in the early 20th century, the narrative follows Georgy, a young peasant boy who inadvertently saves the life of the Tsar's uncle ⬇️

suvata and is subsequently appointed as a companion to the Tsarevich Alexei. The story unfolds through flashbacks, juxtaposing Georgy's life as an elderly man in 1981 with his experiences during the fall of the Romanov dynasty. It explores themes of love, tragedy, and the impact of historical events on individual lives. 4mo

I have read most all of John Boyne‘s novels. In fact, he is probably my second favorite contemporary author. I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this one, but it is, by far, my absolute favorite. I wish everyone would read this book.
⬇️

suvata It is September 1919, and twenty-one-year-old Tristan Sadler takes a train from London to Norwich to deliver a package of letters to the sister of Will Bancroft, the man he fought alongside during the Great War.

But in 1917, Will laid down his guns on the battlefield and declared himself a conscientious objector, an act which has brought shame and dishonour on the Bancroft family. ⬇️

suvata The Absolutist is a masterful, unforgettable tale of passion, jealousy, heroism, and betrayal set in one of the most gruesome trenches of France during World War I.

Please don‘t support this author, don‘t read this book in class, don‘t buy it for your children. The Auschwitz Memorial Museum on Twitter has heavily criticized it.

“The UCL study concluded that the book‘s use in schools helped to foster “an inaccurate perception of German ignorance of the Holocaust.”

JenlovesJT47 I hated this book but liked the movie. I can‘t remember how old the main boy character is supposed to be but in the book he had the mentality of a 2-year-old and it just really bothered me. 3y
thewallflower0707 @JenlovesJT47 The worst thing for me as a German is, that Bruno should be completely indoctrinated into hating Jewish people. It also spreads the lie that the normal population didn‘t know about the camp and what was going on. This book helps Holocaust denial. 3y
JenlovesJT47 @thewallflower0707 that makes a lot of sense. Would have made the story better if Bruno was indoctrinated but became friends with him anyway. It‘s been ages since I‘ve seen the movie and the whole thing is just so sad. I‘ve read so many WWII books. Do you have any recommendations for good WWII historical fiction? 3y

thewallflower0707 @JenlovesJT47 I really recommend testimonials of survivors: Night by Eli Wiesel, If this is a man by Primo Levi, The Twins of Auschwitz by Eva M Kor. The Light in Hidden Places is for younger readers and based on a real story. For a better view into German minds at that time, try Remote Sympathy and The Book Thief. 3y
thewallflower0707 @JenLovesTJ47 More Stories about survivors but not written as non-fiction, try: The Boy who followed his father into Auschwitz, The Klara Witzel Story, The Sisters of Auschwitz, The Brothers of Auschwitz. For Non-Fiction: The Choice by Edith Eger (a magnificent author), The Light of Days (about Jewish resistance), The Nine Hundred. 3y
JenlovesJT47 Thank you! Adding them all to my list 🤗 3y
JenlovesJT47 The only one I‘ve read of these is The Book Thief and it‘s really good. Thank you again! Gonna start with the twins book. 3y

#Crippen #JohnBoyne #OutstandingOctober #BookSpinBingo

July 1910: A gruesome discovery by Chief Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard - a body in the cellar buried under the flagstones is Cora Crippen, former music-hall singer and wife of Dr. Hawley Crippen. No one would have thought the quiet, unassuming Dr. Crippen capable of murder, yet the doctor and his mistress have disappeared from London, and now a full-scale hunt for them has begun.

EadieB Mr. John Robinson, accompanied by his teenage son, Edmund, has just set off on its two-week voyage to North America. Crippen reimagines the amazing escape attempt of one of history's most notorious killers and marks the outstanding American debut of one of Ireland's best young novelists. 3y
EadieB It is an entertaining read about a real-life murder with lots of twists. John Boyne is a master storyteller and his characters are always unique and interesting. I first heard about this murder while reading Eric Larson's Thunderstruck novel and wanted to read more about the murder. If you love books based on true historical accounts then you will love this book. 3y
Andrew65 Can‘t wait to get to this one. Great review. 3y
