I really enjoyed this re-imagining of the real-life tale of Dr Crippen. (And it is a re-imagining as Boyne puts forward a different theory to the generally accepted one)

You can tell it‘s an early Boyne as it doesn‘t have the emotional heft of his later books (ie I didn‘t spend the majority of time crying my eyes out!) but it‘s a really great piece of historical fiction.

Thank you for gifting it to me @jenniferw88 😘

Finally finished my #AuthorAMonth book! Not my favorite John Boyne, but I enjoyed his fictionalization of the murder and subsequent escape attempt. I read Thunderstruck a few years ago, and I think that‘s about enough of the Crippens for me. 😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

erzascarletbookgasm I enjoyed the humour 😊 3y

This is a fictionalised account of a real murder; and with John Boyne‘s skilful storytelling, it‘s superb. He brought so much empathy, humour, and excitement to the story. I was gripped by the tension, and found this utterly entertaining. Fans of John Boyne, do not miss this.

July 1910: A gruesome discovery by Chief Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard - a body in the cellar buried under the flagstones is Cora Crippen, former music-hall singer and wife of Dr. Hawley Crippen. No one would have thought the quiet, unassuming Dr. Crippen capable of murder, yet the doctor and his mistress have disappeared from London, and now a full-scale hunt for them has begun.

EadieB Mr. John Robinson, accompanied by his teenage son, Edmund, has just set off on its two-week voyage to North America. Crippen reimagines the amazing escape attempt of one of history's most notorious killers and marks the outstanding American debut of one of Ireland's best young novelists. 3y
EadieB It is an entertaining read about a real-life murder with lots of twists. John Boyne is a master storyteller and his characters are always unique and interesting. I first heard about this murder while reading Eric Larson's Thunderstruck novel and wanted to read more about the murder. If you love books based on true historical accounts then you will love this book. 3y
Andrew65 Can‘t wait to get to this one. Great review. 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Finally got to finish this today-so good! I love when a historical fiction take on a real crime can still leave me surprised. Plus I got to have my first chai eggnog of the season!

This book is so good, and right before I had to go into work I got to a major plot point but had to stop! I can‘t wait until I can read it again and maybe finish it tonight.

Reviewsbylola Oooh this sounds amazing. Sometimes that situation is the best and worst—at least you have something to look forward to! 6y

This is hard challenge for #24in48 because I had to pick one shelf (of many) from one bookcase (of many) and because it clearly shows how unorganized my shelving system is. I am not a librarian, y‘all.

So I just picked the top shelf of the case nearest me... this case has some keepers that I have already read (like The Gone-Away World, which is first) and many more that are still TBR (like Crippen, which is last).

vivastory I REALLY need to read some Harkaway. I even have the same velvet edition. 6y

Mehso-so

Based on an actual case, Dr. Crippen was believed to have murdered his wife and then fled with his mistress abroad a passenger ship 🚢 bound for North America. When the police find his wife‘s dismembered remains, they race to catch him.

I loved This House is Haunted and The Heart‘s Invisible Furies, but I was not pulled into this story despite the interesting premise. I will still read more by the author, however.

CoffeeCatsBooks Oops, so-so rating, not a bail. 7y
