The artist Vanessa Bell is Virginia Woolf‘s sister. This is a companion catalogue to an exhibition running at MK Gallery (Milton Keynes, UK). The first time I saw Vanessa Bell‘s art I was struck by her style and how her art is painting, crafts and interior decorating. I love how this catalogue shows this. I would have liked more depth in the writing but the images of Bell‘s art make up for it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

pickA charming story written in a simple, straightforward style. Mrs Harris is a likeable character, who has a lovely adventure in Paris, where she forms friendships with the people she encounters. I immediately watched the film, which has some subtle changes and a different ending. Both book and film put a smile on my face.

I've been missing Proust in the morning, so decided to return to Woolf. I read the first two volumes of her diary a few years ago, so starting with Volume 3. There was immediate comfort to be back in her prose.
so-soThis novel is a meticulously researched account of the life of Leonard and Virginia Woolf‘s pet marmoset, Mitz. I think I would‘ve enjoyed it more if I cared about the Bloomsbury Group or was fascinated by the Woolfs. Nunez does have a nice way of incorporating animals into her books, but this still lacked the charm and unique storytelling that made me love her later books. This is much more straightforward historical fiction. #roll100
pickBoth of these stories were delightful! The first, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, is one of the lightest and most simply enjoyable books from the #1001books list that I‘ve come across in a while. Mrs. Harris is a continually determined and optimistic person. I also watched the movie, which was enjoyable, but of course, needlessly changed some details.

I‘m in the middle of two long reads (Cloud Atlas & Amadis of Gaul), but I took a break for some shorter books. Yesterday I listened to Jennifer Chan is Not Alone as my last completed book of 2023, and today I listened to Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris as my first book of 2024. Tomorrow it‘s back to the long reads.

For #autumnplease today I‘ve interpreted autumn in my town as the area of London that my workplace and the university I study at are both in - as it‘s where I spend most of my waking hours! I get to eat lunch in this beautiful Bloomsbury square in my favourite season right near two of my all time favourite bookshops so I am very lucky!
