Batman: The Penguin | John Ostrander, Bill Finger, Doug Moench, Alan Grant

Did anyone else watch the Penguin on HBO? As much as I'm ready for a more light-hearted take on the Dark Knight, Matt Reeves' Batman universe is very compelling. The Penguin had an amazing cast, and they told a great mob story set in Gotham. I'm excited to see how the story continues.

TieDyeDude BTW, I just love Colin Farrell's whole thing in this moment. There are beautiful interviews he's done about his son, he is open about his struggles with addiction and mental health, and he said he watched Pixar movies to get out of the dark headspace from this show. And he is always mesmerizing to watch on screen. 2d
StellaDz Sadly haven‘t watched the show, but Farrell truly stole the show in the movie. An amazing rendition of the Penguin! 2d
Jess I stopped after two episodes because I didn‘t want to be in that head space but will go back to it because the acting was fantastic. Watching Rivals on Hulu and it is more my speed right now (rich people behaving badly with comedy and David Tennent ❤️). 2d

Amiable I watched the entire series! I‘m not a comics reader/viewer so I had no idea about any of the backstories. I was just engrossed in Colin Farrell‘s and Cristin Milioti‘s incredible performances. They each deserve an Emmy! (edited) 1d
Liatrek Loved it! Sofia was an amazing character and I loved that they let the Penguin be 100% villain. The show deserves so many awards 🏆🏆 1d
Liatrek @Amiable YES!!! 1d
JacqMac It was good! The actors are all fantastic. 1d
TieDyeDude @Jess Totally understandable. It was a very dark show about a master manipulator gaslighting everyone until he reaches the height of power *sigh* I was able to turn off that part of my brain though because it was Batman-adjacent 😂 I hadn't heard of Rivals; can't go wrong with Tennent! 1d
TieDyeDude @stellaDz I hope you get the chance to check it out. Farrell is amazing, as is the rest of the cast 1d
TieDyeDude @Amiable They did some fun things with the character. I think the mother-relationship is mostly unique to the show
@Liatrek @Jacqmac I've been following Milioti since she opened the Broadway show Once. I'm so glad she was cast in this and crushed it! Honestly, everyone on screen crushed it

Serotonin My brother highly recommended me to watch this show. Alas, I no longer have access to Max 😞 1d

Pickpick

Reread. It's been a while since I've read Scott Snyder's Batman, but this comic is still amazing. While he would still play in the DC sandbox with Dark Nights, Last Knight is a proper conclusion to Snyder's iconic Batman run. The world has gone to hell, but that's not going to stop Batman from finding the truth, making a plan, and inspiring others to fight one more time.

Hated it. Knew I'd hate it. At least we can tick this one off the list.

If you like the idea of a nightmarish, Bat-adjacent dream sequence with some violence thrown in, this could be the high concept horror novella for you.

If, however, you prefer substance and plot to vibes, and don't like migraine-inducing visuals, give this one a miss.

Need some Adam West Batman to recover now.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

TieDyeDude I am a big Batman fan, and this is supposed to be an essential graphic novel, but I didn't like it at all! 3w
RaeLovesToRead @TieDyeDude I didn't like Year One, and I actively disliked The Dark Knight Returns too. I think I'll just have to stick to the Lego and the Rocksteady games. Man, I loved the Arkham videogames trilogy. 3w
The_Penniless_Author Adam West is and will always be the best Batman. 🦇 3w

RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Apart from Videogames Batman!!! 3w
RamsFan1963 @RaeLovesToRead I agree the visuals was headache inducing. I read it when it first came out and I remember buying the hardback edition, but sold it on ebay years later for about half what I spent 3w
RaeLovesToRead @RamsFan1963 Yikes, that would probably be worth quite a bit now! It wasn't my thing. All vibes, no story, and too grotesque. If you enjoy horror though, it's truly horrific! 3w

Batman so sad! Batman #705-707 from Chuck Dixon sees the Riddler forcing Cluemaster into a team-up, leading Batman and Robin on a wild goose chase while Riddler executes a heist. I love a good Riddler story!

100/150 I don't know if its caused by the constraints of the video game, but this is a very plodding Batman story. The identity of the Arkham Knight is pretty obvious, and the subplot of Batman fighting against the Joker's blood in his system was a total parallel to the later DC plotline, The Batman Who Laughed. If you love all things Batman, you might want to give it a try, otherwise I'd skip it. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

DieAReader 🥳 Fantastic!! 1mo
Soscha Marv Wolfman is pretty-old school. With all that entails. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1mo
RamsFan1963 @Soscha I love Marv Wolfman. From Tomb of Dracula, to Teen Titans, to Crisis on Infinite Earths, I've always thought his writing was top notch. I think he was boxed in by what the video game people wanted 1mo
KadaGul The game was freaking awesome. 1mo

Batman Begins...as in the Dark Knight 😉🦇...you bet I made that work 😂 (for those who do not know, I have a Batman Obsession).

This was the first regular book (without illustrations) that I have reread 💕📚🎬💝.

Batman/Houdini: The Devil's Workshop | Howard V. Chaykin, Mark Chiarello, John Francis Moore

While this Elseworlds has a similar feel to Gotham by Gaslight, it's set about 20 years later in 1907, and isn't related to that earlier story. This one has the huge draw for me of featuring Harry Houdini, and then the huge negative of Chaykin using racial slurs and misogyny in a way that comes across as "naughty boy saying naughty words" rather than as (unnecessary) historical accuracy. It's a disappointment, as is the plot that shoehorns in a ⬇️

Bookwomble ... a Renfield-ish Joker and vampires. It has the makings of a great story, spoiled by a hamfisted execution. 3🦇 solely for the very good watercolour artwork. 2mo
