"I also meet some funny people who advise me to "trade" upon my nationality. They tell me that if I wish to succeed in literature in America I should dress in Chinese costume, carry a fan in my hand, wear a pair of scarlet beaded slippers, live in New York, and come of high birth... I should discourse on my spirit acquaintance with Chinese ancestors..."

So good. Grew up seeing her and always thought she had integrity! Well this book read by her lets me know she was a force and she made her own way. Her family, her struggles in a man‘s workforce, her tenacity and some good scoops! Dan Rather-NOT!!!😏. Went to the bookstore to look at the pics!!!;). Great memoir.

Reggie I watched her Intimate Portrait on Lifetime back in the day and I have so much respect for her. Her parents didn‘t have a son so she took on the role of which child would take care of them. And she‘s married to Maury! I can only imagine what their home life is like. lol I love her. 3w
Kboltz That‘s how I felt after listening to her story…she is class!!!! 3w

Very cute, but probably could‘ve been shorter. An enjoyable read, and I‘d be open to reading the other books in the series!

While this is a short book, it was not a quick read in that it is dense. It reminded me of Ocean Vuong's writing.

The story was well executed. It tackled the complex issue of gentrification (specifically in a Chinatown context) in an accessible way. At the end of the book, there were a few pages with background information on Chinatowns, gentrification, community activism, and a short note on the language used (Chinese dialogue is used throughout the story).

The Verifiers was one of my favorite books of 2022 so I was happy to see a Book 2 in the Claudia Lim series. I got notified that my library Libby had the ebook & audiobook & I got them both & traded off. While I didn‘t love this one as much as the first book (as it seemed a bit more muddled), I love Claudia the MC & enjoyed the smart & dry humor & will read the next one.

#Naturalitsy #MidWinterSolace #HyggeHourReadathon

Spending my #HyggeHour filling in my poster for the #OnceUponABookClub 2024 40 Book Challenge from StoryGraph so I can take a photo tomorrow to get my free book (Procrastination is my middle name). No snack tonight, but drinking tea & listening to the tagged book while I write titles/dates in. If I finish in time, I‘ll read some more on my Kindle.

Back to work tomorrow but off Tuesday/Wed.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this follow up to The Verifiers, and especially enjoyed the humor in it, I am rather frustrated with it. By the book‘s end, essentially none of the story is resolved and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I can appreciate elements of a story threading into the next book, but too much is left unresolved here.
