Repost for @BarbaraBB :
Thank you all for participating in #90sSpringFling. It was so much fun to see how we all over the world lived our lives through the 90s, listened to the same music and dressed the same way.
The Fight Club buddy read has really taken the book to new level. @Cinfhen thank you for organizing. I hope you had a great wedding party. 💕

Next will be a #BelowZer00s buddy read (& party 🎉🎈), Jan 10-12. Details will follow! 😘❤️

kspenmoll Veronica. Love to join in! 6y

Fight Club: A Novel | Chuck Palahniuk

Mehso-so

I realized that although I broke the rules with #90sSpringFling & talked about Fight Club, I didn't review it. A so-so as it's not the book for me--too grossly wacko, but I think Palahniuk shows some demented brilliance in especially the twist. My e-book's afterward about fight clubs in culture was fascinating. I never would have read it except for the #buddyread but now I want to watch the movie full on instead of the parts/pieces I saw before.

Cinfhen I think the movie is better!! The ambiguity of the book flows better on film. But it was still wacko and too violent and I think somewhat juvenile too. Thanks for joining in on discussion. It helped me appreciate the book way more. 6y

This, to me, is a crucial takeaway. Today, in real life, there's no Project Mayhem as such, but the angry people referred to here exist. They vote for Trump and Brexit, they become school shooters or stab people in the street, or they run off to join Daesh. The discontent of the disenfranchised and disillusioned is real and destructive.

This seems to be some kind of graphic novel/comic series? I know @Cinfhen won‘t be reading it, but have you seen it @britt_brooke ? It‘s on sale for $2.99 on Kindle. #90sSpringFling

britt_brooke Thanks for tagging me! I‘ve looked into it, but the hard copy is expensive and reviews are very mixed. I think I‘ll grab this deal and check it out. 6y
Cinfhen Yeah, #HardPass but I am curious about your thoughts @britt_brooke 6y
Cinfhen Are you buying it, Meg??? 6y

Megabooks @britt_brooke Great! I‘m very curious myself, but I‘m on the fence @Cinfhen 🤷🏻‍♀️ I sometimes like graphic novels more than written books, so it‘s very tempting! I‘ll decide tonight. (edited) 6y
DaveNeufeld I read this when it was coming out monthly and was pretty underwhelmed. I believe part 3 is either still coming out monthly now as well, or maybe it‘s finished already. 6y
Megabooks @DaveNeufeld Thanks for the input. I don‘t think I‘m going to pick it up right now. 👍🏻 6y

Cinfhen THIS IS OPEN TO ALL!! If you want to join in for a #BelowZer00s buddyread in January add your name and book suggestion ☃️ 6y
Cinfhen I‘m suggesting a female author 6y
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen I‘d love to read Case Histories 👍🏻yes from me (edited) 6y

madamereadsalot1 I'll throw this one out there. 6y
batsy Because I'm ashamed that I've had this book for a very very very long time without reading it 🙈 (But I also haven't read both the Atkinson and Ishiguro and want to vote for them both 😂) 6y
TrishB As I love Atkinson I could read again 😁 putting thinking hat one! 6y
Librarybelle I loved Case Histories but would happily read it again with others! I‘ve not read read either Never Let Me Go or The Known World. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I have Case History on my tbr shelf, don‘t mind reading it! But I‘ll put this out there too because I think it‘ll generate lots of opinions (edited) 6y
CarolynM I've read the other Jackson Brodie books but not Case Histories and I would certainly like to. I'd also be interested in Never Let Me Go. I'm also going to throw in 6y
Cinfhen Ooooh, this is gonna be tough!! Lots of good choices already in the first hour!!! @madamereadsalot1 @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM we‘re collecting titles until Thursday so I‘ll be curious to see what other gems appear @Librarybelle @TrishB @Cathythoughts 6y
Cinfhen Your choice does sound great @Cathythoughts but we‘re choosing books published between 2000-2009 😘 6y
BarbaraBB It was my pleasure, thanks for having me ❤️ 6y
BarbaraBB Most of the books mentioned above I‘ve already read so I‘m throwing an obscure one from the #1001books list 6y
Mdargusch Lots of good suggestions so far! And I haven‘t read any of them so that‘s a plus. Case Histories sounds interesting though. 6y
cobwebmoth I've wanted to read this one for a while, but haven't had a chance. 6y
Megabooks I love stories about North Korea! 6y
Megabooks Also this one: I‘ve been meaning to listen to the audiobook 6y
Cinfhen Ooohhh, they both sound good @Megabooks 🙌🏻and JSF Is a total hit or miss author @cobwebmoth but I think his books make for good discussions. It‘s gonna be hard to narrow down the choices 6y
TrishB Don‘t know if we can nominate more than one? 6y
Cinfhen Excellent choices @TrishB Thanks!! 6y
TrishB Whoops I just read it‘s only one selection!! You can choose either 😁 6y
Cinfhen Hi @BarbaraBB choose three books from this list that you‘re interested in reading, I‘ll choose three ( I‘m assuming we are each choosing our own suggestion) and then I‘ll make a graphic of the 6 books selected and we‘ll put them up for votes. 6y
BarbaraBB I think Case Histories will easily win and that one sounds good. I‘ll nominate that one, and Kieron Smith Boy and Veronica! (edited) 6y

#90sSpringFling

Question 7 of 7.

If you participated in #StepfordSummerParty and or #HellOween  buddy reads did you have a favorite book? How did Fight Club compare to the other two books? How did you feel about Palahniuk‘s writing compared to the others? Do you see any similarities between the three books? Would you consider Fight Club horror???

Megabooks I didn‘t do either of those buddy reads, but I have read The Stepford Wives. I think Fight Club is more suspense than horror, but I did find FC scarier! 6y
BookwormAHN I missed The Stepford Wives, but I really loved The Elementals. I liked the way Palahniuk writes but I didn't think that Fight Club was horror. I think it was more psychological suspense. 6y
BarbaraBB I agree, FC is much more psychological than horror. I didn‘t do either of the other buddy reads but I will be joining from now on ♥️ 6y
See All 20 Comments
Librarybelle I‘ve participated in all 3! Stepford Wives was the spookiest for me, I think. The Elementals I didn‘t really enjoy and thought a little campy, though I know I was in the minority on that. Fight Club is more psychological. All three have been fun to read, and I‘m excited to see what the next read will be! 6y
TrishB I loved The Elementals. Didn‘t do Stepford Wives and bailed on Fight Club. 6y
peaKnit I‘ve participated in all three as well. I enjoyed The Stepford Wives the most I think because the 70‘s were such an odd time. I didn‘t think any of them were particularly scary, but all definitely weird 😊 I‘m with @Librarybelle on The Elementals, campy is a good word. 6y
Kalalalatja I read The Elementals and enjoyed it way more than FC! 6y
thereadingowlvina I didn't join The Stepford Wives, loved The Elementals and bailed on Fight Club. I didn't like the writing at all 😔 6y
DebinHawaii I joined in all three & Stepford Wives was my favorite. All had dark elements mixed with dark humor. I agree that Fight Club was more psychological suspense than horror. I listened to The Elementals on audio which I think enhanced its campiness & made it fun-scary. Fight Club just grossed me out. So for me, I'd rank them in the order we read them. Thanks for hosting @Cinfhen & @BarbaraBB looking forward to another buddy read. 🤗 6y
CarolynM I wouldn't have read any of them without the buddy reads but I felt that all of them were interesting reads. I think The Stepford Wives was the best of them. It was atmospheric and insightful and I actually cared about the characters. Thanks for the party @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB 😘😘 6y
GripLitGrl The stepford wives was my fave the book had a more creepy vibe & diffrent ending to the film. So while i saw the movie the book felt diffrent & kept my interest. Elementals would be my second pick. fight club the book was so-so for me really translated better for me as a film. 6y
GripLitGrl I Definitely dont see fight club as horror genre. The other two books fit into the horor genre. 6y
batsy All three are such fascinating books that I probably would have put off for longer if I didn't do the buddy reads, so thank you for that ❤️😁 Stepford and Elementals win out over Fight Club, but I'm glad I read FC; it's definitely a book that disrupts one's perspective! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I didn‘t do The Elementals (couldn‘t get a copy on time), SW and FC were great reads though I liked SW better. Wouldn‘t have picked up FC if not for the buddy read. Both are thought provoking and have loads of discussion points. FC is definitely not horror. 6y
Cinfhen First to my triple hit players @batsy @GripLitGrl @CarolynM @DebinHawaii @peaknit @Librarybelle Thank you for partying with me through the decades! It‘s been super fun and I‘ve found our discussions really insightful. For me, SW was my fav too. The story just worked on all the levels and it‘s withstood the test of time. I too thought Elementals was more of a spoof and campy is the perfect word. It was more atmospheric than scary. Hated FC 6y
Cinfhen @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Kalalalatja @thereadingowlvina See above comments and THANKS for sharing your LOVE of reading with me!!! These buddy reads are only successful because of your participation!! So fun to share music, fashion and books with you all!!! Hope you‘ll be back for #BelowZer00s in Jan 2020😜 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I missed the Stepford Wives buddy read 🙁 but I've done the last 2 reads. I liked both The Elementals and Fight Club. I agree with others about Fight Club being more psychological and Elementals more horror (campy, yes). I think Stepford Wives would be more MY kind of book than the other two so I've got to read it someday. I have it, just need to carve out the time. I've read 2 other books from that author and LOVED them both!! 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen Count me in for #BelowZer00s ! 6y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yay! You can still nominate a book from the 00s - see @Cinfhen ‘s page! 6y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Great! Thanks! I will start thinking. 6y
