Street Sweeper
Street Sweeper | Elliot Perlman

How breathtakingly close we are to lives that at first seem so far away. From the civil rights struggle in the United States to the Nazi crimes against humanity in Europe, there are more stories than people passing one another every day on the bustling streets of every crowded city. Only some stories survive to become history.Recently released from prison, Lamont Williams, an African American probationary janitor in a Manhattan hospital and father of a little girl he can t locate, strikes up an unlikely friendship with an elderly patient, a Holocaust survivor who was a prisoner in Auschwitz-Birkenau.A few blocks uptown, historian Adam Zignelik, an untenured Columbia professor, finds both his career and his long-term romantic relationship falling apart. Emerging from the depths of his own personal history, Adam sees, in a promising research topic suggested by an American World War II veteran, the beginnings of something that might just save him professionally, and perhaps even personally. As these men try to survive in early-twenty-first-century New York, history comes to life in ways neither of them could have foreseen. Two very different paths Lamont s and Adam s lead to one greater story as "The Street Sweeper," in dealing with memory, love, guilt, heroism, the extremes of racism and unexpected kindness, spans the twentieth century to the present, and spans the globe from New York to Chicago to Auschwitz.Epic in scope, this is a remarkable feat of storytelling."

#lovetorecommend #17BookLove I gave five stars to each of these books when I first read them. It's been awhile so wonder where they would fall in my rating system now, but I recall recommending each of these titles to friends when the books first came out.

howjessicareads I've recommended People of the Book a lot too! 8y
Amandajoy I read & loved Invisible Bridge & Cutting for Stone. I've been putting off The Dovekeepers because I heard mixed things. But seeing it recommended alongside those other two means it's moving up the list! 8y
MicheleinPhilly I have 4 of these. Unread. 😬 8y

Cinfhen Haha, which four @MicheleinPhilly ? 8y
Cinfhen @Amandajoy my first attempt at DoveKeepers didn't go well, but i picked it up a few months later and it clicked! Read it when your not rushed and have time to sit with it. There is a ton of ancient biblical history which is at first confusing but once it begins to seep in its like being transported to another kingdom. It's gorgeous and mystical and exotic! I loved it❤️ (edited) 8y
Cinfhen @jess.how that was another book that required time and a clear headspace- it was such a great work of ancient history, I loved how all the stories were interconnected 8y
TrishB Loved The Dovekeepers, it's one of my favourite books (and covers). 8y
MicheleinPhilly The Street Sweeper, Cutting for Stone, The Invisible Bridge, and Defending Jacob. I should probably use them for #LitsyAtoZ as I'm doing author last name/owned for over a year. 8y
Cinfhen A few of those are a little lengthy but well worth it, @MicheleinPhilly a quick but solid thriller and a must read (IMO) is (edited) 8y
shawnmooney Is this the same Elliott Perlman that wrote 8y
shawnmooney I guess it must be. I read that one years ago and thought it was flawed but quite remarkable! 8y
Cinfhen I definitely want to read the book you just tagged @shawnmooney Thanks😘 8y
