The Street Sweeper
The Street Sweeper | Elliot Perlman
3 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
From the civil rights struggle in the United States to the crematoria of Auschwitz-Birkenau, there are momentous stories everywhere. But only some survive to become history. Lamont Williams is a black man from the Bronx trying to return to a normal life after serving a six-year prison term for a crime for which he was wrongly convicted. Historian Adam Zignelik is an untenured Columbia professor whose career and long-term relationship are falling apart. When Lamont Williams strikes up an unlikely friendship with a patient at the hospital where he works as a janitor, he learns about the Sonderkommando--prisoners forced to work in the gas chambers and crematoria of the Nazi extermination camps. Meanwhile, Adam pursues a promising research topic suggested by a World War II veteran, a topic that might just save him professionally and even personally. When the lives of these two men intersect, history comes to life in ways neither of them could have foreseen. The Street Sweeper is an astonishing feat of storytelling that addresses the personal and the political as it sweeps across the globe, through the seminal events of the twentieth century to the present. Honest, hypnotic and redemptive, this is a novel that explores the responsibility of the historian, the weight of history on all of us, and the crucial role that bearing witness plays in breaking the cycle of human cataclysm. From the Hardcover edition.

#lovetorecommend #17BookLove I gave five stars to each of these books when I first read them. It's been awhile so wonder where they would fall in my rating system now, but I recall recommending each of these titles to friends when the books first came out.

howjessicareads I've recommended People of the Book a lot too! 8y
Amandajoy I read & loved Invisible Bridge & Cutting for Stone. I've been putting off The Dovekeepers because I heard mixed things. But seeing it recommended alongside those other two means it's moving up the list! 8y
MicheleinPhilly I have 4 of these. Unread. 😬 8y

Cinfhen Haha, which four @MicheleinPhilly ? 8y
Cinfhen @Amandajoy my first attempt at DoveKeepers didn't go well, but i picked it up a few months later and it clicked! Read it when your not rushed and have time to sit with it. There is a ton of ancient biblical history which is at first confusing but once it begins to seep in its like being transported to another kingdom. It's gorgeous and mystical and exotic! I loved it❤️ (edited) 8y
Cinfhen @jess.how that was another book that required time and a clear headspace- it was such a great work of ancient history, I loved how all the stories were interconnected 8y
TrishB Loved The Dovekeepers, it's one of my favourite books (and covers). 8y
MicheleinPhilly The Street Sweeper, Cutting for Stone, The Invisible Bridge, and Defending Jacob. I should probably use them for #LitsyAtoZ as I'm doing author last name/owned for over a year. 8y
Cinfhen A few of those are a little lengthy but well worth it, @MicheleinPhilly a quick but solid thriller and a must read (IMO) is (edited) 8y
shawnmooney Is this the same Elliott Perlman that wrote 8y
shawnmooney I guess it must be. I read that one years ago and thought it was flawed but quite remarkable! 8y
