The Windy City isn't quite ready for Phoebe Somervillethe outrageous, curvaceous New York knockout who has just inherited the Chicago Stars football team. And Phoebe is definitely not ready for the Stars' head coach, former gridiron legend Dan Calebow, a sexist jock taskmaster with a one-track mind. Calebow is everything Phoebe abhors. And the sexy new boss is everything Dan despisesa meddling bimbo who doesn't know a pigskin from a pitcher's mound. So why is Dan drawn to the shameless sexpot like a heat-seeking missile? And why does the coach's good ol' boy charm leave cosmopolitan Phoebe feeling awkward, tongue-tied . . . and ready to fight? The sexy, heartwarming, and hilarious "prequel" to This Heart of MineSusan Elizabeth Phillips's New York Times bestselling blockbusterIt Had To Be You is an enchanting story of two stubborn people who believe in playing for keeps.

I read the 3rd book in the series and enjoyed. So I decided to start with book one. The plot was good but it was the character of Phoebe that really captured me. The story had all the feels and I enjoyed the journey of the main characters to each other. 4⭐️

I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I think the best part was the first sentence, the one I posted for First Line Fridays. After that, things quickly went downhill from there. Phoebe Somerville is a spoiled little rich girl basically disowned by her father, and I could drudge up little sympathy for her character with the exception of the scene in which she was raped and the aftermath when no one believed her. I'll pass! 🌟

Phoebe Somerville outraged everyone by bringing a French poodle and a Hungarian lover to her father‘s funeral.

Anybody use this site? It's a pretty cool resource for romance book readers.

Couldn‘t take the sexist, angry, abusive “hero” anymore.

Most unappealing hero I‘ve read in a while. Also that first role play scene left me feeling all weird.

A Chicago Stars reread marathon has been in the works for a while now. It's been a couple years since I read them for the first time... #osrbc #romantsy

🌟🌟🌟⭐⭐
The 1st chapter was POV weird but the book settled down. Very early SEP so it didn't have that lovely flair that her later work obviously has, though little signs of it poked through here & there. Those were the parts I enjoyed most. Dan I struggled with at times but I quite liked Phoebe. A decent read but nothing I'd write home about. #romansty #osrbc

I loved the most recent release in this series so I started it from the beginning. Pros: I love the characterization, particularly the secondary cast + how multilayered/complex the main character is. Cons: Parts of the romance + even a few things about the male lead gave me pause for part of the book.

Overall, I enjoyed + will be continuing the series ASAP 👍🏻

Tav I can't wait to see what your favorite is. Mine is 8y

"Like plantation slaves, the National Football League 's Chicago Stars had come to pay homage to the man who owned them"

Seriously??? I don't know if I can keep reading if this is how the book is going to be

I LOVE LOVE LOVED the most recent installment in this series (First Star I See Tonight 👇🏻) so now I'm starting the whole thing from the beginning and I couldn't be happier!

Has anyone read this one?? ⭐️🏈❤️

Lauren_reading Love her books!!! 8y
raelaschoenherr I have! Interested to hear what you think. 8y
intothehallofbooks @raelaschoenherr I just finished this, haha! I liked it overall, but I feel like there were some surprisingly wonky things with the romance between Phoebe and Dan. Maybe? But I love all of the secondary characters and want to keep reading! 8y
raelaschoenherr I agree! It's a bit dated, don't you think? 8y

I think SEP is now officially on the list of authors who I just can't read.....

melonbooks14 If you want to give her a 2nd chance try Heroes are my Weakness. I stay away from the Chicago ⭐️s. 8y

Mehso-so

Book 1 of #24in48 finished (last night around 1am - 76 pages, but wasn't able to post until now bc technical issues). Somewhere between a pick and a so-so. I liked the actual plot and twists at the end but there were some sexist-leaning themes that pulled me out of the book on occasion.

This is May's Old School Romance club pick. I don't know a lot about American Football, I don't like rape in the backstory and it's a bit old school for me (I'm in the group for the more modern recs and the chat) yet still I keep turning the pages. Sign of a good writer.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven't read this one, but I loved the other two on your screen. ;) 8y
Verity @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Charlie has been on my list a long time and I've been meaning to get around to her. The other was an if you like x then y rec from somewhere! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Verity I was recommended it by Amazon. Funny, quirky series about a bunch of nerds who find the computer code to time travel & manipulate the program (i.e. Life, matrix-style) & decide to go to medieval England & be wizards. It's goofy and silly, but a fun nerdy read. The audiobooks was good too. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa .....Of course Charley is always good. 8y
