Teaching Banned Books
Teaching Banned Books: 12 Guides for Young Readers | Pat Scales
18 posts | 4 to read
Who hasn't read Blubber? And yet, published in 1974 and a New York Times Outstanding Book, it remains one of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books and is kept out of many school libraries. As a standard-bearer for intellectual freedom, the school librarian is in an ideal position to collaborate with teachers to not only protect the freedom to read but also ensure that valued books with valuable lessons are not quarantined from the readers for whom they were written. In this classroom and library-ready book of discussion guides, award-winning champion of children's literature Pat Scales shows that there is a way to teach these books while respecting all views. The twelve books chosen for inclusion in Teaching Banned Books, all challenged at one time or another, are jumping off points for rich and engaging discussion among young readers, their librarians and teachers, and their parents. Each guide includes a summary of the novel, a pre-reading activity, tips for introducing the topic, critical-thinking discussion questions, and an annotated bibliography of related fiction and nonfiction. Describing a literature discussion program she set up as a middle school librarian, Scales

IndoorDame @kspenmoll that‘s great news! 2y
Leftcoastzen Absolutely absurd! 2y
KathyWheeler This crap has got to stop! I‘m glad it was taken care of, but these people are scary and are trying to shut down any kind of thought that‘s different from their extremely narrow view of the world. 2y
Roary47 Maybe this is why my students mention girls going into STEM programs. 😢 2y
CaitlinR This reminds us how important down ballot races are — WTF indeed! 2y

Banned Books Week is almost here! It‘s September 18th through September 24th. With libraries and basic human rights for marginalized communities under fierce attack, this week feels more important than ever. My reading list for this year is a combination of my local library‘s recommendations and titles from the Top Ten most challenged books of 2021 and 2020.

alisiakae Great selection! I plan on reading this one during Banned Books Week from the 2021 list 2y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft I read that one earlier this year, otherwise it would have been on my list! 2y

The Onion is on point today!

“Under our zero-tolerance policy, any novel brought onto school grounds will result in the offending student‘s expulsion. Paraphernalia like bookmarks, highlighters, and library cards will be immediately confiscated. And don‘t think you can get away with hiding a paperback in your pocket, either. We will not hesitate to conduct a strip search.”

Welcome #BacktoSchool for all my fellow Litsy educators out there!

Graywacke I love the onion. I shared this with my teenage texans. 2y
Saknicole Horrifying and on point. I am about to start F451 with my juniors. 2y
Kimberlone @Saknicole that book will never not be relevant 2y

kspenmoll F451 soooo relevant right now! 2y
KT1432 This is unfortunately not too far from the truth as I received a voicemail for my daughter‘s ISD in Texas stating if parents don‘t want their child to have access to the library at all they can simply opt them out. 😵‍💫😬 2y
Christine 💯😂😭 2y
Christine @lele1432 OMG. ☹️ 2y
Kimberlone @lele1432 omg opt their children out of library?! 2y
TheBookHippie I just cannot...........OMG. 2y

TrishB Awful 😢 2y
CarolynM I laughed, but cringed as well. It‘s a very sad state of affairs. 2y
Chelsea.Poole So good. And sad. 2y
TheRiehlDeal WOW…. They‘re acting like bringing books, highlighters, and library cards to school is a bad thing. Like, what harm is going to be done bringing these to a school?? This is going too far in my opinion. 2y
The_Book_Ninja The real reason these bags exist it‘s quite depressing. 2y

My favorite week of the year is almost here. Banned Books Week starts Sunday. Like last year, I‘m hoping to get through a few new-to-me books and reread a couple of old favorites. I read Invisible Man the summer before my senior year of high school. I‘m not sure which Hemingway novel I‘ll listen to, as it will depend on when library holds become available. #bannedbooksweek

wanderinglynn I love banned books week! 🙌🏻❤️📚 3y
GingerAntics This is one of my favourite weeks of the year!!! I read Invisible Man when I was a senior in high school for a research paper. I don‘t remember any of it. I may have to take that for a spin. 3y
DGRachel @GingerAntics I was looking at my other reading goals for the rest of the year and I think I‘m going to have to put a reread of Invisible Man off until next year‘s BBW. I don‘t remember much of it either, but I remember loving it. 3y
GingerAntics @DGRachel sadly, I don‘t even remember that. I remember buying the book. I remember taking notes. I remember carrying the book around with me every day. I don‘t remember anything else. I‘m way behind on all of my reading goals this year. I‘m just happy to actually read something these days. 3y

Here is my book stack for the #24B4Monday #readathon #maymadness. Harry Potter, Margaret, & Pet Sematary are all listed as banned in one place or another. The other 2 books are just on my TBR. Photo of Judy Blume from HuffPost. @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65 @Clwojick @RadicalReader

BeansPage That's a good stack 👍😃👍 6y
Shley9225 What was Margaret ever banned for? 6y
Andrew65 Interesting choices. Good luck with the Readathon. 😊👍 6y
Eggbeater @Shley9225 According to Wikipedia, "frank discussions of sexual and religious topics." I guess getting your period is a taboo subject. Maybe they ought to read Stephe King's Carrie instead. 6y

Had to share the holiday gift for M‘s teacher...another big reader! Her teacher worked as the school librarian for the last 4 years and just transitioned this year back to teaching 4th grade.

The school mascot is an owl, hence all the 🦉 stuff!

britt_brooke Very nice!! 7y
Cortg Excellent gifts! 7y
RebelReader I love magnetic book marks! They are great because they don't fall out of your book. Especially if you carry books in your purse or bag. 😉 7y

I so rarely get to my morning coffee while it's still jot enough to read the books, that I had to take a pic yesterday. Heat-reactive banned books mug. :-)

Helped set up this display in the library today 😁👍🏻👍🏻! Each of the tiny book covers can be flipped up to reveal why that particular book has been banned. A loooot of patrons spending some time at it 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!! Quite a few of them took pictures too. @BookBabe 's donated bookmarks are in the center 😎👍🏻. #BannedBooksWeek #LitsyLovesLibraries

JSW Little House in the Big Woods?!? 7y
No_One @JSW wow, really? I can't see that detail. I wonder why!! Maybe Caroline Ingalls' feelings about the native indians? 🤔 7y
monkeygirlsmama I‘m with @JSW, I didn‘t realize Little House in the Big Woods was a banned book. Nor Charlotte‘s Web. What were the reasons?! P.S. Love @BookBabe‘s bookmarks. 7y
See All 12 Comments
MrBook @JSW @No_One @monkeygirlsmama Yeah, in the Dakotas, comments made by characters regarding Native Americans. As for CW, it was banned in Kansas because talking animals are supposedly blasphemous, and other places because Charlotte's dying is inappropriate subject material. 🙈🤷🏼‍♂️ (edited) 7y
monkeygirlsmama @MrBook Pfsh alrighty then. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
No_One @MrBook thanks! Sometimes political correctness goes too far. What's real is real. Not always pretty, but real! 7y
JSW Well I guess I've always been a rebel reader!! 💪🏻💪🏻 7y
KimHM I did a mini-read out in my classes today, a bit of 1984 and a bit of Beloved 📚❤️ 7y
AbstractMonica Amazing 😊 7y
tapgurl I'm sad that so far it looks like the high school where I work is not acknowledging banned book week - lame! 7y

For #marchintoreading yesterday, a favourite #bookbag - one side and then the other. Frequently banned books. (I also have a mug and socks to match!)

JoeStalksBeck I have the socks! Love them! 8y
Liatrek I have the socks too! So comfy 🙂 8y
Krysta The mug might be my favourite though.... it is heat activated! When my drink is hot, the black-out disappears so the book title is clear. 8y
Lmstraubie Great bag! 8y
