A historical fiction novel about Adele Bloch-Bauer and Gustav Klimt, the artist who created Lady in Gold and Judith in Adele‘s image. The story moves between Adele‘s life before/during WW 1 and her niece Marie‘s life during/after the WW II, and her eventual pursuit of the paintings that had been seized by the Nazi‘s. Thanks to @Cinfhen for sending this to me ages ago and thanks to December‘s #Bookspin for encouraging me to pull this off my shelf.

I picked this book up because I remember reading about the court case. The story is captivating. It alternates between Adele and Maria. And I found I couldn‘t put it down.

My only hesitation is that this is a fictionalization version of a true story. While I‘m sure the author did her due diligence as to the history, I waiver on whether fictionalizing real people‘s stories is prudent (for lack of a better word).

Today is the last day for my library‘s summer reading challenge. I‘m super psyched that I read (approx.) 120hrs in 7 weeks and 28.5 books. 🎉🙌🏻🥳

A fascinating blend of fact and fiction, this is a story of Adele Bloch-Bauer, her portrait The Lady in Gold, painted by artist Gustav Klimt and her niece‘s quest to regain possession of the Klimt painting that was taken from her family during the Nazi invasion.

Beautifully written, I was easily transported back in time to the Viennese salons, studios and museums, bringing the Vienna Secession Movement and art culture to life. Enjoyable read

This one was really great. I love novels about art. Gustav Klimt has been a favorite for a long time. If you ever get to Vienna, the Belvedere is a must.

60 pages in and really enjoying this book so far. If you like art, history, WWII novels, and Klimt, I highly recommend picking this up.

“Everything and everyone had been stolen from us. We were broken-hearted but not broken.” Something about those words really resonated with me. The atrocities that befell the Jews of Europe still shocks me & yet they persevered. This book captures the painstaking rise of the Nazi party in vivid rich historical detail. I enjoyed learning the backstory of Klimt‘s famous pieces of art, especially since I got to see a few with @DivineDiana in NY🙌🏻

After The Celebration of Jewish Books event, where we met the author of this book, @Cinfhen and I visited The Neue Museum to see the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Gustav Klimt, “The Woman in Gold”. I could not photograph the actual painting,which was exquisite! So,this is us posing in front of a print hung in the lower level of the Museum. #bookinspiration #averyspecialday

This novel features two narratives: the first follows Adele Blockbauer, Klimt‘s “Woman in Gold,” and spotlights her desire to break out of the rigid roles prescribed for her as an upper class woman. The other follows Adele‘s niece‘s odyssey to flee the Nazis in late 1930‘s Vienna and her decades-long fight to recover the Klimt paintings the Nazis stole from her family. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm a sucker for books involving art pieces and the people behind the beauty. This was an enjoyable read and I loved the portrayal of Klimt and the ideas behind his work. I love seeing the lives of the people in the paintings so that they are more than just an image. Now to watch the movie...

What's the meaning of art? How does tragedy shape the way we see the world? Can beauty be stolen? What's legacy without love? I don't have the answers to these questions, but I enjoyed asking them.

I'm going to DNF this one, even though I'm 70% in. It's just...tedious. I'm not sure what the tension is for Adele and while Maria's story is certainly tragic, it's not compelling.

Unbelievably, I'm managing to knit and read at the same time!

The author is married to my cousin so I got an Advance Reader's Edition of this novel about one of Gustav Klimt's most famous models-- 5 months before it's on sale! Can't wait to read this one. Laurie's a great writer!
