The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life | Mark Manson
In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. For decades, weve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Lets be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesnt sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it isa dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, lets-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up. Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

I found Mark Manson‘s approach in this book to be a breath of fresh air. Instead of the usual “think positive” advice, Manson keeps it real. He says it‘s okay not to care about everything and that trying to be happy all the time is exhausting. What really clicked for me was his message about choosing what truly matters and letting go of the rest. If you‘re over the constant pressure to be perfect, this book is a must-read.

You could pick worse from the self-help session. It‘s easy enough to read, you can knock it over in a single sitting, and it‘s ultimately a positive message: find out what you care about, care about it a lot, and disregard the stuff that doesn‘t serve you. We could all benefit from doing that a bit more, probably. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-fuck-mark-ma...

I'm not typically one for self help books, but this isn't your average self help title. Readers will laugh out loud while gaining a finer understanding or mindset on how to better accept the things worth accepting and free themselves, by not giving a f- about those that don't.

I enjoyed this one. It was engaging for me because I already have the mindset that he was sharing. I wish more people would read it because social media really has people messed up right now. At least, from what I see.

Listened to the audiobook. Some good/helpful ideas. Definitely written from a straight, white, male perspective - which was often a turn-off.

Overall a fairly good pop-psychology/philosophy book on how to determine your values and what matters to you in life. Wish he would have cited his research when stating sweeping generalizations.

I liked this. Nothing earth shattering, but it's a novel approach. I listened to see if it would be good for my Growth Goals & Grit students, knowing that the language wouldn't work for some. My worry would be the nonchalant way he discusses his history of drug use. I feel it normalizes it.

Meh. It‘s a fresh, modern way of saying all the self-help things that have been said and written a million times before over the history of humankind. Part stoicism. Part Greek. Part conclusions he reached through therapy. Manson doesn‘t necessarily add to the conversation as much as make it as blunt as a man-to-man locker room halftime speech as well as being more humorous than the typical self-help tome. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

1. I know the tagged book might seem like an odd choice, but I think if I had read this going into high school, my teen years would have been very different.
2. The House on The Cerulean Sea
3. John Scalzi. I think he'd be a great dinner conversationalist.

Took this metaphorically, so the word “therapy“ is not in the title, but, man, it helped me survive my last years of teaching with Covid + some insane parents. 😅

dabbe @Eggs It did, but I still retired a bit earlier than I perhaps should have. I've been subbing to help pay medical insurance until my husband takes SS at the end of this year. When subbing, I think of it as intellectual babysitting, and I think of this title if any misfiring-brain-celled student give me any crap. 🤣🤩😍 (edited) 2y

Started great with many laughs. The second half was still OK, but a bit repetitive and mild less interested.

Mark Manson gives a controversial view on how to live a good life. He also provides many stories and relatable experiences that make you think twice about how you can control certain situations. Its also helpful in the act of building self awareness. Its not like most books you will read. I highly reccommend to all.

This was an excellent and much needed book for me right now. Mark Manson throws no punches as he tells you that you can't care about it all! That you have to pick and choose what to give a fuck about and how once you decide what to give a fuck about your life improves. Great read. 5 ⭐

Wow. This book was garbage. There is nothing less interesting, intuitive, or helpful than white, male, surface level, neuro typical advice. The man is a millionaire, he can afford to not give a fuck.

This was okay and worth the listen as my commute audiobook. Some good insights of life, although I thought it was a little hilarious at one point in the book when he said something like, “now that I‘m in my 30s” stated with a sense that now he‘s so mature and has the answers 😅 I guess a little mansplaining.

I‘m going to be honest…I am already rather stingy with the f*cks I give, but when two friends recommend a book, you read it. There were a few good points in here, but nothing that I haven‘t heard before in some form. You are not special. Give a f*ck about things that are truly worthy of your time. I work in a hotel and while I am not nearly delusional enough to think that the rooms and staff are perfect, I can tell when someone stays up ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick half the night trying to think of something to complain about. Why? Because they have nothing better to give a f*ck about. This isn‘t perfect. Some of the author‘s hot takes might be a little sexist and he references his f*ckboy past often, but I find f*ckboys somewhat amusing, if ridiculous. I think I‘ll refer to this as I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell for it‘s now, hopefully, more mature audience.

Not sure why I continued reading this book other than that it was a quick read. I had serious issues with the first half as the author made grand declarations unsupported by research (at least he didn't cite any). The second half addresses five counterintuitive values for living a better life and these chapters resonated better with me. Not sure I'd recommend anyone else read this, but there is some value in it.

Quick, motivational, easy read that is fun because of Mark Manson's injection of quirky humor at unforeseen moments.

This book helps me shift my paradigm of how to live away from a self-centered, fatalistic, and victimized viewpoint to a more caring, empowered, and honest one.

I recommend it highly as long as you are OK with some foul language.
