Almost Famous Women: Stories | Megan Mayhew Bergman
49 posts | 52 read | 100 to read
From a prizewinning, beloved young author, a provocative collection that explores the lives of colorful, intrepid women in history. These stories linger in ones memory long after reading them (Star Tribune, Minneapolis). The fascinating characters in Megan Mayhew Bergmans collection of stories as beautiful and strange as the women who inspired them (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) are defined by their creative impulses, fierce independence, and sometimes reckless decisions. In The Siege at Whale Cay, cross-dressing Standard Oil heiress Joe Carstairs seduces Marlene Dietrich. In A High-Grade Bitch Sits Down for Lunch, aviator and writer Beryl Markham lives alone in Nairobi and engages in a battle of wills with a stallion. In Hell-Diving Women, the first integrated, all-girl swing band sparks a violent reaction in North Carolina. Other heroines, born in proximity to the spotlight, struggle to distinguish themselves: Lord Byrons illegitimate daughter, Allegra; Oscar Wildes wild niece, Dolly; Edna St. Vincent Millays talented sister, Norma; James Joyces daughter, Lucia. Almost Famous Women offers an elegant and intimate look at artists who desired recognition. By assiduously depicting their intimacy and power struggles, Bergman allows for a close examination of the multiplicity of womens experiences (The New York Times Book Review). The world wasnt always kind to the women who star in these stories, but through Mayhew Bergmans stunning imagination, they receive the attention they deserve. Almost Famous Women is addictive and tantalizing, each story whetting our appetite for more (Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

This is a really interesting read. It's an unusual format, and not what I was expecting. It's a collection of short fiction based on real women's lives, which in some ways I'm a little uneasy about - it feels like taking liberties with someone's actual life story to fictionalise it. The author makes it clear that it's fiction, though, and lists further reading if you want to find about more about the women. Very well written and thought provoking.

My #TBR shelf of books I might read soon is more of a messy stack (or three) but I‘ve found one of those fun library carts and plan to use it for my TBR! #TBRShelfie #LiteraryLuck

vkois88 Those carts are EVERYWHERE now. They were originally for crafts, but I use mine to hold baby supplies... then it blew up on Instagram and here as a way to hold books and I feel left out lol... I maaaaay have to get another one 🤔🤔🤔 6y

It decided to be Fall today so I moved my chair outside to read at work. It was a terrible mistake because it made me so sleepy right before busloads of FFA students arrived on a tour. Still worth it though.

They say that “well-behaved women seldom make history.” Unfortunately they can be forgotten from history. Thankfully this author is doing her part to immortalize the women in these pages. She does such a great job, I read it in one sitting. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

How I loved this historical fiction collection of #shortstories!

The author researched the lives of women peripheral to famous people like Dolly Wilde, Oscar‘s neice, Edna St Vincent Millay‘s sister, Norma, and the world‘s fastest woman, Joe. The collection made me want to read the author‘s source material to understand more about these fascinating women. 4.5⭐️ #yearofshortstories

Megabooks Nope! That‘s the one I‘m loving. Super interesting concept of taking the life of a woman near a famous person and coming up with a fictional story. For example Allegra, Lord Byron‘s illegitimate daughter, or Edna St Vincent Millay‘s sister. @Reviewsbylola 7y

Beautifully written fictionalized accounts of small moments in the lives of women who were nearly famous. It‘s a great examination particularly of our power as women and how it changes as we age.

My Christmas haul! The Sarah Winman book is definitely a #blameitonlitsy pick. The other 2 have been on my TBR long before I joined Litsy. None are available at my library, which is my criteria for gift books. I also got a bunch of @outofprint shirts/socks, some cat stuff, & candy. Pioneer Girl is a withdrawn library copy & the cover is bent in the middle, but I‘ll get over it. Looking forward to adding these to my #MountTBR stack in 2018!

It may have been the fact that I was listening to this book, but it was really hard to keep up with who was who. Some of the stories for me didn‘t made much sense. I may try this one in actual book form rather than audiobook another day because I did like the stories to a point but was so confused it made me dislike them. ⭐️⭐️

Historical fiction short stories imagine the lives of women on the periphery of fame, largely ignored or forgotten by history. I savored these stories. There was also a bibliography at the end for more information about these independent, daring, impulsive, creative, and reckless women.

Without question, my favorite book of short stories of last year, this is a deliciously quixotic collection of tales of women lingering just out of the limelight. The characters that populate these stories – conjoined twins whose show business career has faded, Oscar Wolfe's niece – are real, but Mayhew Bergman has reached into the shadows of untold history to conjure up these bewitching stories. The results are spellbinding. Not to be missed.
