The hardest part of death is learning how to live. The last thing Alice expects to see at her husband's graveside on his birthday is a giant, talking frog. On closer inspection, it's a grown man dressed as Kermit. Turns out Alice's husband is buried next to Ben's older brother Harry, who--as a parting practical joke in his will--insisted that Ben visit his grave each year, on this specific day, dressed in an as-yet-undisclosed pageant of embarrassing fancy dress. With little but their grief and this one day in common, Alice and Ben form a very special, very strange friendship, meeting just once a year: same day, same time, same place--different silly costume. As the years pass and grief alters, can their unique bond help them cope with the hardest part of death: life?

Devoured this one in a day - oh, my heart. Halfway through, I decided that I need to check out more by this author, but then his acknowledgements said that this was a departure from his normal
content & tone, so now I wonder. Still will probably check out more of his, because I couldn't put this down & sobbed through the end. 🥹

julesG I didn't expect this book to be this book because I checked it out based on the author, didn't even read the blurb. But I wasn't disappointed. 2d
mom2bugnbee @julesG Have you liked his other works? 2d
julesG Yes, I liked what I've read of his. I like the humour, which was also well done in Grave Talk 2d

First book of the #OutWithTheOldInWithTheNew #YearEnd #20in4 #readathon

@Andrew65

When Alice met Ben for the first time, she was visiting her husband's grave alone for the first time. Ben was visiting his brother's grave, right next to Alice's husbands. Ben was dressed as Kermit the Frog, a stipulation in his brother's will.

Over the next years Ben and Alice meet once a year, when Ben has to wear a costume at the cemetery. ⬇️

This book is an intriguing exploration of grief. While it‘s marketed as humor, I personally didn‘t find it all that funny. It still has a charm to it. The author took a highly original approach to presenting themes of loss and healing.
The interactions between Alice & Ben, the unusual circumstances of their annual meetings, are very heartfelt & I enjoyed reading through them. It felt very authentic and touching.

JudeCC Though this wasn‘t entirely my cup of tea in tone, the writing was strong, and I appreciated the fresh perspective the author brought to the subject of coping with loss. For a debut novel, it‘s really impressive, and I‘d gladly read more from this author in the future. #gravetalk 1mo
JudeCC I‘d recommend this book to anyone looking for a reflective yet lighthearted take on grief and the unexpected ways we find connection and healing. 1mo

Went to the movies w/my daughter today. One of us was seeing Terrifier 3; the other was seeing Wild Robot. Okay, *I* was seeing Wild Robot. When it came time to enter the theatre I didn't think about the fact that my soon to be 19 y/o can pass for a middle schooler and handed her her ticket and I held on to mine. Naturally they wanted to see her id, which she doesn't have one, and w/o it or me going w/her she couldn't see her horrifying movie.⤵️

monkeygirlsmama ⤴️ So I, the one picking animated fun over gore and mayhem had to go into the basically sold out theatre with my daughter so she could watch her disgusting slasher film. I had no seat and had to sit on the wall riser, but I had my Kindle app. Thank you God for modern wonders and a slew of books at my fingertips, because that is how I managed to make it through the following 2+hrs without losing my sanity. 😂🫣 Now if only I'd had earplugs. 3mo
MonicaLoves2Read Thank Goodness for the Kindle App😂 3mo

rwmg But did you get to see “Wild Robot“ as well? If you sat through her film, it's only fair she sits through yours.

And aren't seats assigned in your cinema?

tpixie @monkeygirlsmama such a good mom! Yes! Thank goodness for the Kindle app. 3mo
Bklover Definitely a Great Mama Award! 3mo
monkeygirlsmama @rwmg I haven't yet, but will this week. 😝 I have a membership so can go again at no extra cost. And, yes, you choose your seats at the time of purchase, but since I didn't technically have a ticket for that movie that's why I didn't end up being able to find a seat. 3mo
