We Are Free to Change the World
We Are Free to Change the World: Hannah Arendt's Lessons in Love and Disobedience | Lyndsey Stonebridge
56 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
A timely guide on how to liveand thinkthrough the challenges of our century drawn from the life and thought of political theorist Hannah Arendt, one of the twentieth centurys foremost opponents of totalitarianism We are free to change the world and to start something new in it.Hannah Arendt The violent unease of todays world would have been familiar to Hannah Arendt. Tyranny, occupation, disenchantment, post-truth politics, conspiracy theories, racism, mass migration: She lived through them all. Born in the first decade of the last century, she escaped fascist Europe to make a new life for herself in America, where she became one of its most influentialand controversialpublic intellectuals. She wrote about power and terror, exile and love, and above all, about freedom. Questioningthinkingwas her first defense against tyranny. She advocated a politics of action and plurality, courage and, when necessary, disobedience. We Are Free to Change the World is a book about the Arendt we need for the twenty-first century. It tells us how and why Arendt came to think the way she did, and how to think when our own politics goes off the rails. Both a guide to Arendts life and work, and its dialogue with our troubled present, We Are Free to Change the World is an urgent call for us to think, as Hannah Arendt didunflinchingly, lovingly, and defiantlythrough our own unpredictable times.

This is between a pick and a so-so for me, but manages to come down just this side of pick. This is a hard book to get through when our country is currently a flaming mess. Arendt also has some problematic views on race that are clearly due to when she was alive. One would hope, were she alive now, those views would be different.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics There is still some validity to her views on totalitarianism and her perspective of the last time hate ruled the world. Worth reading when in the right head space, but know some of this is going to anger you and even sound white supremacist in places. Stonebridge does a good job at calling out those points and adding her own updates to the ideas for today.

This is such a cool detail. It‘s also unsurprising. Someone spoke about and from a perspective he did not have, so he sought out that perspective. Plus, he reads. He reads voluntarily and happily. I‘m not sure the current resident of the Oval Office knows the difference between a stack of papers and a book. Both are to be ignored and are of no interest to him. Maybe he can identify the book as something to put his Diet Coke can on. 🙄

Bookwomble Diet Coke? I thought he drinks bleach to stave off the 'rona! 😄 2d

I‘ve got to disagree with Arendt. There is not a new kind of evil, a special, radical kind of evil that started with the Nazis. Every human being is fully capable of such evil. It is our better nature that allows us to override any desire to be evil and choose to be good people. When one starts to believe that this evil can benefit one‘s better nature is when these atrocities happen.

GingerAntics These are not monsters. They are not special. These are humans that chose to do evil. #LyndseyStonebridge #HannahArendt #WeAreFreeToChangeTheWorld #evil #humanity 3d

GingerAntics @kspenmoll I suppose it is. We like to wax poetic about freedom around here, but it‘s never been true freedom. It‘s always been freedom for the select few. 6d

GingerAntics @kspenmoll for all the founding father worship conservatives have become known for, this would be radical to them. Then again, let‘s be honest, the founding fathers were WAY more radical than most conservatives will admit (if they even know). 6d

This bothers me. This troubles me greatly. This feels just a little too MAGA for my liking. Peaceful protest is NOT violence by definition. Period. (Not saying everyone was peaceful, but to say that any entire movement is violent because some are is reductionist.)

This book was so dense and meaty that I pulled quotes for my review. I can say that I am inclined to read more of Ardent‘s books but feel it would take more than a year & I would certainly need buddy reads, because although I am fascinated the philosophy thanks to the exposure from classes my son took in college,I struggle with processing philosophical thinking. Any takers? #adventuresinphilosophy

Suet624 I‘m not ready right now but, yes, soon I would be interested (edited) 2w

Suet624 Oh yeah, that penguin reader looks interesting! We are overwhelmed with snow up here. It‘s like time is standing still. No cars, no plows. I feel like it‘s what Vermont used to be, with snow drifts over our heads. I walked to the bakery, a couple of blocks away and got myself a great big cinnamon roll. Just a few people out shoveling . It‘s gorgeous, but a lot. (edited) 2w

“‘-nication was possible with him, not because he lied but because he was surrounded by the most reliable of all safeguards against the words and the presence of others, and hence against reality as such. (EJ 49)‘

His words were empty because his mind was without resonance. Eichmann was thoughtless to the point that he no longer inhabited the real world—which was partly why he could wreak such terror upon it.”

Sounds familiar.

I have had conversations with die hard republicans and asked them, “have you ever asked yourself if maybe, just maybe, you‘re wrong?” You can imagine the responses. My response is, “and that‘s the problem. Until you have, there is no conversation to have,” and walk away. I have had this thought since I was a kid, and was told by my Catholic grandmother that it was quite an uncharitable thought to have. 🙄 Apparently people genuinely believe it is wrong to believe the world shouldn‘t need charity, but since it does, it is our duty to do what we can. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Go figure.

Apparently Ardent‘s The Origins of Totalitarianism includes three separate sections, which have also been published separately. This tagged book is taking me much longer to read than I anticipated because of its parallels to life now.
Interestingly, our freshman World History class just finished a unit on imperialism, & Cecil Rhodes & his crass attitude towards Africa & its people are duly noted.

As you can see, plenty of insightful observations & wisdom offered here on behalf of Arendt. Highly relevant today, though I‘d be hard pressed to believe there would ever be a time when it isn‘t.

Freedom is in plurality. However, it requires relinquishing a degree of sovereignty. (Cliche freedom isn‘t free.)

I had to laugh when Stonebridge points out shouting “stupid” into the void of social media is not effective resistance. 😆
