Allegedly | Tiffany D Jackson
Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myer s Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting debut by Tiffany D. Jackson about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home.Mary B. Addison killed a baby. Allegedly. She didn t say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it? There wasn t a point to setting the record straight before, but now she s got Ted and their unborn child to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary s fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?"

Woah 😳 No happiness or light in this YA novel. Mary “allegedly” committed an unthinkable crime at 9 years old. She‘s been in “baby jail” as she calls it, for years. She‘s now in a halfway home for delinquent juveniles and readers discover more about her past and the crime as her case gets another look. A page turner.

This was riveting from beginning to end! I absolutely could not put it down. I loved the way it was told through stream of consciousness narrative which made it work perfectly. It was enthralling, heartbreaking and twisty. What a fun yet dark read!

I really enjoyed this dark, twisty story of a young girl's journey through the intense juvenile corrections system. 16 year old Mary has served her time for killing an infant when she was 9. Mary is now pregnant with her own child and she would do anything to keep him and turn her back on her tragic past. But what really happened with baby Allison? Is Mary a cold blooded killer or an innocent victim of her own mother's demons... 4 stars!

Suddenly realized I didn‘t have an audiobook for my commute & frantically searched my library TBR w/o really reading the synopsis.

Follows a 9yo convicted of manslaughter (a dark, tense, & uncomfortable topic) & then layers on an even more dark, tense & uncomfortable look at the US justice system & beyond.

ALL the emotions in this book. Sat in my car for an extra 15min to hear more.

Highly recommend the audiobook, the narrator is fantastic!

Since my TBR is so long and sometimes it‘s hard for me to choose what to read next, often I‘ll go to random.org and have it pick a number for me and I‘ll read whatever book is linked with that number in my list. This was so good! I listened to the audio while working and Bahni Turpin didn‘t disappoint.

Mary is accused and convicted of a crime but did she really do it? This was Tiffany D. Jackson‘s debut novel and it was great.

I LOVED the book Allegedly by Tiffany Jackson. It stuck with me for a very long time. We follow a young black girl named Mary who is placed in a group home after recently getting released from juvie for allegedly killing a white baby. Mary is on the verge of becoming an adult so she is trying to find her place in a world where the system continues to beat her back down. I encourage everyone to pick it up!

I started this book intending to read just a bit of it because I had other things to do and, you know, life to get to....I read the entire thing in one sitting. 😮 I never got to that thing called “life.” Because the story was so gripping, the characters‘ voices so authentic, and my brain so intent on knowing what really happened in Mary‘s childhood. Worth a day of putting life on hold. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A young adult novel that kept me guessing all the way until the end. The story of a girl who allegedly killed a small child her mother was babysitting and her trying to make a future for herself years later by proving her innocence. I thought multiple times I knew how it all would end, but never got it right. Definitely better than I was expecting!

Wow. This book had me hooked from the start and all the way through to the end!

Accused of killing an infant that was in her mother‘s care at the age of 9, Mary has never known much outside of baby jail and group homes. When Mary finds out she is pregnant, she must decide how to tell her truth in order to protect and keep her own child.

This book is intense and has some really interesting twists!

We spent most of the day today on lockdown while police dogs searched the school after someone found bullets on the front walkway. I had to help the police search the girls bathroom every time a student used it (5 hour lock down...) since they couldn‘t go in the female restrooms. All is good, it was leftover from trap club and a student panicked when he realized he had bullets in his pocket and tossed them. Stupid, but made for a stressful day.

Johanna414 After school, I had to go to the DMV with two sick kids. I officially give up and I‘m eating this entire chocolate bar before bed. At least my book is good. 6y

This book...haunting, sad. I was cheering for Mary the entire time and so sad when she hit every roadblock possible. And then the end is so shocking and a tad confusing. Mary killed a baby, allegedly, and after spending time in jail she is put in a horrible group home. And then she finds herself pregnant. Will she be allowed to keep her baby after allegedly killing another when she was younger? 2019 SWON TRC

I loved this book. I had a hard time putting in down; I wanted to know the ending like NOW. But I have to say, it did NOT go where I thought it would! I thought all the characters were compelling and well thought-out. I caught some of the hints that lead to the ending, like puzzle pieces, and wasn‘t sure how they‘d fit together. The ending could have been fleshed out a bit more, but I was left fairly satisfied.

Both of Tiffany D. Jackson's books have been serious page-turners for me. I think she could rein her endings in a bit (when the rest of the story is so good, there's no reason to go crazy for drama at the last second) but with how strong her characters' voices have been and how riveted they have me I will definitely read anything she comes out with.

This chilly, rainy night is perfect for a bath and a book! I read Tiffany D. Jackson's second book Monday's Not Coming last fall and couldn't put it down. If anything Allegedly is grabbing me even more! Jackson may be an automatic addition to my TBR in the future. Both of these have some tough subject matter but she strikes a great balance of finding impact without getting gratuitous.
