An unputdownable memoir of love, desire, and personal growth that follows a happily married mother's exploration of sex and relationships--outside of her marriage. "An intimate portrait of a woman on an earnest search to reclaim her passion and her body from the quotidian obligations of her various roles."--Christie Tate, bestselling author of Group and BFF Molly Roden Winter was a mom of two young children in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with a husband, Stewart, who often worked late. One night when Stewart missed the kids' bedtime, again, she stormed out of the house to clear her head. At impromptu drinks with a friend, she met Matt, an unbelievably hot younger man. When Molly told her husband that Matt had asked her out, she was surprised that he encouraged her to accept. So begins Molly's unexpected open marriage, and with it a life-changing journey of self-discovery. Molly and Stewart, who also begins to see other people, set ground rules to start: Don't date an ex. Don't date someone you work with. Don't go to anyone's house. And above all, don't fall in love. Spoiler alert: They end up breaking most of their rules, even the most important one. Molly follows her sexual desire onto dating sites and to public places around New York City. In therapy sessions, fueled by the discovery that her parents had an open marriage, too, she grapples with her past and what it means to be both a mother and her truest self. Molly Roden Winter narrates her journey with warmth and style in this magnetic, intensely personal debut memoir.

A fascinating look into another's marriage. The whole multi-relationship prospect seems exhausting to me; both physically and emotionally. But I get the different partners feeding different facets of a person. I like my alone time more 😁 My favorite part of the book was Molly's mother, Mary--love her!

I grew up in the 60‘s and lived in a commune in the 70‘s, so I‘m not a prude. I spent time in my 40‘s wishing I could expand my marriage…but mostly I just wanted a relationship in which I could have my own little room to retreat to. This woman (and her husband) decided to open up their marriage and each of them became involved with other partners. I had a few problems with this because a) they must be independently wealthy and quite privileged 🔽

Suet624 Because they spent a fortune on hotel rooms, b) I can‘t figure out why the author chooses to have her heart broken repeatedly merely so she can feel beautiful and special to someone else for a period of time, c) did her therapy help her or is she still floundering about trying to get comfy with her and her husband‘s partners. When did she and her husband actually hang out as a family? Okay, enough of my complaining. (edited) 6mo
Tamra Honestly, my life has so many moving parts as it is I can‘t imagine intentionally juggling more. 😅 Each to their own - though I‘m wise enough to know every single person has their challenges so the grass isn‘t necessarily greener. 6mo
IndoorDame I‘ve seen almost exclusively negative comments about this book so don‘t have a great desire to read it, but as someone who doesn‘t strictly identify as poly and has been in both open and monogamous relationships, I do think it‘s worth knowing that open relationship tend to be radically different from one another (structure, rules, intentions) but people don‘t change and the problems in open relationships tend to be the same as in monogamous ones. Suet624 @Tamra Definitely each to their own - I have no qualms with them working through their desires. I just know, as you said, that the grass isn't necessarily greener. 6mo
Suet624 @IndoorDame Thanks for your comments. I was surprised by how high the ratings were on Goodreads for this book, actually. Now that I'm in my late 60's I'm so happy to live alone and not juggle anyone else's sexual or emotional needs. I remember having strong desires and I prefer where I'm at now, where I'm not buffeted about by my hormones. :) With kids and grandkids about, my happiness comes from other sources. It's peaceful. 6mo
IndoorDame @Suet624 I‘m so glad to hear you‘ve come to a place of peace! That kind of happiness is really the dream whatever shape it takes. 💜 6mo

I started reading this book and being very judgemental. Yes, the author can be very annoying and exhausting, and I felt that at the beginning she was just trying to please her husband and the partners she encountered along the way.

But I‘m glad I read it. It gave me a new perspective about an alternative lifestyle, how messy it can get, and how communication and both main partners not forgetting that their family comes first can make this work.

👫💍 +🧍I don‘t know what to say or think of this one! It‘s crazy, reckless, immoral, and mindblowing! I could keep going, but that‘s enough for now.

Emily Henry‘s backlist, Christina Lauren‘s books, and Abby Jimenez books! I also just ordered Chris Bohjalian‘s new book! The Princess of Las Vegas!

Beatriz Williams! Fiona Davis! Alice Feeney! So many others!!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Amor4Libros me too!! She‘s so reckless and I‘m wondering about stds…how are the kids affected? 😳 7mo
Amor4Libros @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes! And she doesn‘t even seem happy about her experiences🙄 7mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Amor4Libros I finally finished this one… I hate to give a negative review of a memoir but this woman has to be one of the most selfish, unhappy, self destructive people I‘ve read about… when she‘s not happy no one is! 😫 I also wonder how the kids dealt with this. (edited) 7mo
Amor4Libros @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I was waiting for your review! I can totally see your point, and I agree. I wish that there was more info on how it affected the kids, but I‘m also inclined to think that maybe they were OK 🤷🏽‍♀️ Kids are more resilient than what we give them credit for…(cont) 7mo
Amor4Libros @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks When it comes to her, even though she was exasperating 🙄 I appreciated the vulnerability…she went into this (I want to say blindly 🤔), and just got super-overwhelmed with everything and had a human reaction to something that she was not prepared to handle. 7mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️ How could this possibly go wrong? Blaming a trusted book friend for this one. 😂 Memoir is one of my favorite genres because learning about others‘ lives is fascinating and helps us better understand other humans. This was quite out of my wheelhouse, but I don‘t regret it. I did, however, want more on how this arrangement affected the children. Beyond cringy at times, but I‘m trying very hard not to judge. It‘s difficult.

Hooked_on_books I am a firm believer that so-called “open” marriages do not work and are indicative of a deeper, unresolved problem. 8mo

I didn‘t start this today (started yesterday) but it is making for interesting Valentine‘s Day reading for sure. Also, I chose not to take it to my PT appointment today because I took a steamy romance on Monday for my initial visit and I didn‘t want my paired reading to make my Dr. uncomfortable. LOL!

#audiorun views today on the East River. Just started this audiobook and the subject matter is shocking and fascinating, as advertised. But I‘m finding the main thing I can‘t get over so far is the fact that this woman ate an enormous, messy corn muffin during her first therapy session and had to be asked not to bring food to future sessions because she got crumbs everywhere. Truly psychotic behavior 😆

squirrelbrain Sounds utterly bonkers! 🤪 9mo

Bookish_Viking Your posts and pictures of the City are envy inducing. Do you know a good alley I could move into there? Preferably a covered one (lots of fire escapes and stuff to block the rain) 9mo
cariashley @Bookish_Viking 🤣🤣 NYC housing truly is insane. My very first apartment after college was so compact, I could open the fridge from my bed. It was still $1500 a month in 2005, but worth it!! 9mo
Bookish_Viking I‘m still wanting to move there someday. Though as time goes, I run out of “somedays”. I used to have a contact there that I went to school with, she was helping me with moving. But then Covid hit. I don‘t suppose you know anyone that could use a random quiet book nerd of roommate? 9mo
cariashley @Bookish_Viking you should! I just met someone who lived in other cities for years and moved to NYC a couple years ago and has zero regrets. She‘s loving it. I don‘t know any potential roommates at the moment but will keep it in mind! 9mo

I have mixed feelings about this audiobook. I‘m grateful that the author has written about her open marriage, a practice which is still a bit taboo and many people choose not to speak about openly. I can see why, as Winter and her husband have sons who are made aware of their parents‘ arrangement. Deep issues are brushed aside for a more soap-opera feeling confessional, which I must admit kept me listening! Unexamined privilege abounds.

AmyG Good review. I picked this one up as it was getting some buzz. I am old so I find this a bit fascinating. (edited) 10mo
Megabooks I ended up bailing on this. Definitely too much soapy drama!!!! 😩 10mo

I‘m old enough that I‘ve had several (perhaps many) conversations with friends and family about marital affairs. I hold no judgment because every situation has its own story. However, I‘ve never been in conversation about open marriage and found this memoir (read by the author) fascinating. I think the reason for this is she never paints anyone (including her husband) as having shady intentions. Her mom‘s support is interesting, too. ⬇️

marleed I did listen with AirPods while my 18 mo grandson was watching Miss Rachel. i vocally gasped a couple times making me chuckle and Canon wonder why I seemed particularly interested in this iteration of the bubble, bubble, bubble pop song 🤣 10mo
Megabooks I‘m next in line for this at the library and happy to see a good review!! 👍🏻 10mo
marleed @Megabooks opinions of the religious right never entered this narrative which I think made it more interesting to simply consider her perspective. Her concerns were about herself and navigating a meaningful marriage around their lifestyle. I think it helps that she seems to have a great therapist! I can‘t wait to read your thoughts. 10mo
