Expiration Dates | Rebecca Serle
'Rebecca Serle is a maestro of love in all its forms' - GABRIELLE ZEVIN, author of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow Being single is like playing the lottery. There's always the chance that with one piece of paper you could win it all. . . From the New York Times bestselling author of In Five Years and One Italian Summer comes the romance that will define a generation. Daphne believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it - the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she'd spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend. Daphne has been receiving the numbered papers for over twenty years, always wondering when there might be one without an expiration. Finally, the night of a blind date at her favorite Los Angeles restaurant, there's only a name: Jake. But as Jake and Daphne's story unfolds, Daphne finds herself doubting the paper's prediction, and wrestling with what it means to be both committed and truthful. Because Daphne knows things Jake doesn't, information that - if he found out - would break his heart. Told with her signature warmth and insight into matters of the heart, Rebecca Serle has finally set her sights on romantic love. The result is a gripping, emotional, passionate, and (yes) heartbreaking novel about what it means to be single, what it means to find love, and ultimately how we define each of them for ourselves. Expiration Dates is the one fans have been waiting for. *~* Praise for Rebecca Serle ~*~ 'I loved In Five Years but with One Italian Summer Rebecca has truly excelled herself. An extraordinary, beautiful, magical book' JILL MANSELL, author of Promise Me 'Startlingly fresh and utterly compelling, One Italian Summer is a spellbinding story of love, loss and hope. . . It's extraordinary storytelling - a book with magic on every page' - HOLLY MILLER, author of What Might Have Been 'Breathtakingly original and heartbreakingly emotional. . . I was floored by it' - LAURA JANE WILLIAMS, author of Love Struck 'One Italian Summer is the perfect escapist read. Compelling, moving and masterfully told' - LAURA KAY, author of Wild Things 'A gorgeous story that swept me away to Italy - breathtaking! - EMMA COOPER, author of It Was Always You 'Gorgeous and I am SO HERE for women's fiction that surprises - which this did in spades. Loved it and would read anything she ever writes - CESCA MAJOR, author of Maybe Next Time 'Rebecca Serle has crafted a beautiful love story which shows her character's grief slowly ebbing away and being replaced by something new' - IPAPER 'Wonderful on grief and love, and every reader lucky enough to still have their mother will want to hug her tight after this' - DAILY MAIL 'This haunting, touching tale is sure to get under your skin' - SUNDAY EXPRESS

#ReadAway2024

Finished last week & gets a soft pick from me, I liked it well enough, but didn‘t love it. This is the first book from this author I‘ve read & I liked her use of magical realism & the idea that the MC bases her relationships on the slips of #Paper with “expiration dates” that magically appear when she meets them. (fits for yesterday‘s #SchoolSpirit prompt) It had the easy predictability of a rom-com but went a little deeper.

A little later in the week than my usual Hilo visit but I get the added “fun” of being filmed for our company monthly update.🫣

Fueling up & trying to cram this one in as it goes back to the library today.

Daphne gets a note with a name and number of days on it - it is how long that relationship will last. Then she gets a note with Jake and no days - is he her long term love? We learn about Daphne, her bff Hugo, her work mates, and family along with past dates as her relationship with Jake progresses. ⬇️

bthegood I knew where this was headed and that was fine. The MC and her obsession with being different, not worthy of love due to a medical condition was tiring. It did hammer home the theme of living your life without fear of love and commitment. A unique concept, only meh in its execution. Overall, an okay read.

I think I liked it - the premise was interesting, but felt undeveloped. The story had emotional pull, but the conclusion of the book was weird. Magical realism was very down to earth, but reasoning was vague.

This is a short, sweet story about a dating woman who comes across papers that tells her how long they‘ll date. I liked how she is 30 years old, as it brings a different perspective on dating than I‘m used to reading. Especially with her experiences. The prospect is very well written between her past relationships and how nonchalant she felt with those versus present time relationship. Which is where the ending fell through for me.

Expiration dates was an unexpected delight for me. I really loved the different things (fate vs choice) that is brought up for discussion, especially at the end. It never once occurred to me that the thing that happened at the end would have been done, but it does make sense and I'm glad it happened because Daphne needed the wake up call. I loved how it ended and it was the warm fuzzy book I needed to read right now.

Really liked this story about Daphne who gets a note about how long the relationship will last, every time she meets someone new. She‘s so real, never a false note in her conversations with guys, friends, her family. In fact, a conversation she has with her dad near the end of the book made me cry. It‘s a book about the power of love and friendship and living the one life you‘ve been given.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I picked this book up on a whim last time I was at the library. Thought the cover was eye catching and the blurb, in turn, sounded cute. Never had read or heard of the author before, but decided to give her a go. So glad I went with first impressions because this book was amazing! With the exception of a quick pause to run to Starbucks with the youngest for a weekend treat, this was a read it one go book. So good I could hardly put it down.

Loved that I did not see the twist in the story coming at all, and the ending was perfect.

I just flew through this in one sitting and I am floored. The TWISTY genius of Rebecca Serle. For such a fantastical premise, this story still felt so grounded and relatable and real. I cried and laughed and cheered alongside these beautiful characters. Clearly I need to read more from her. I will be thinking about this for a LONG time!

While I wasn‘t always a fan of the constant timeline switches…I still found this to be another solid heartfelt contemporary romance from this author. I like how this author writes a story…she doesn‘t add extraneous unnecessary details and makes magical realism fun and oddly believable. The narration by Julia Whelan was fantastic.

If this were the first Rebecca Serle book I‘d read I‘d say it was wonderful. I love the magical realism in her books, and this is a good one to pull you out of a slump. However I read One Italian Summer first and I loved it so much that this book paled a bit in comparison. While I would read them both again, if you haven‘t read any of her books I adored One Italian Summer.

Daphne‘s love life is complicated…each time she begins a romantic relationship, she receives a note with a number of how long the coupling will last. She chooses and evaluates her boyfriends based on this. It‘s all tied up with a secret only she, her parents and a couple friends know…

I feel like Serle kinda moved the goalposts halfway through the book? I definitely didn‘t like the ending at all but there was enough in the rest of the book, even with the game-changing “reveal” that this was a nice book to spend a few hours with.

Oh, this is a good one. It starts out and carries on as a fun romcom with a touch of magical realism that fits the story so seamlessly it‘s like yes, of course, some people just receive notice of how long a relationship will last. But this is Rebecca Serle and her stories have delicious layers making this so much more than a romcom.

Since her debut novel, I‘ve been a fan of Serle‘s writing and the almost no-nonsense magic that she brings about within her stories. Here Daphne always receives a piece of paper of some kind with the name of the person and the duration of their relationship. The book opens with the first paper that doesn‘t have the time limit. In this quick, emotional and unexpected read, I really enjoyed it and can‘t wait to see what Serle writes next!

My first Serle book, it definitely won‘t be my last. It‘s a bit romantic comedy, friend fest, introspective deep dive, all tied up with a paranormal twist…wow, never thought I‘d put those descriptives together.
Daphne Bell, for over 20 years, has been living her romantic life through a series of slips of paper that mysteriously come her way. With each slip comes a first name and a timeframe…the exact period of time they will be together. As 🔻

robinb she‘s grown older, she yearns for the slip with a name…but no time limit. Enter Jake. As Daphne and Jake grow closer and begin to discuss future plans, Daphne wrestles with the dilemma of being both committed to a relationship and also being truthful about the paper slips and parts of her own life.
I really enjoyed this one! It was all over the place with emotions…humorous and light, deeply felt, heart wrenching. But ultimately it struck me 🔻
8mo
robinb for its growth arc of Daphne‘s character. She learns some very tough but valuable lessons as she sticks with a long-lasting relationship, and by the denouement, those lessons are fully realized by a wonderfully satisfying ending.
Whole-heartedly recommended. 5/5⭐️

This one had me weeping at the end. What if you knew exactly how long each relationship in your life would last (2 years, 3 months or maybe just 7 months)? Daphne finds random notes that give her these details but should she trust them or just fall in love and trust the universe? Such a fascinating premise that kept me gasping for breath!
