#JubilantJuly day 2 in the books. I drove for 11 hours today through all sorts of nasty weather, but now I‘m here with my extended family. We listened to the tagged book on the way up along with a part of Lev Wood‘s book about the Middle East. Kept up with my chapter a day reads, and will read my book club cozy before bed.

Books read 1/6

mabell I wouldn‘t be able to read after that day - I‘d just pass out! 1y

The Baudelaires are shipped off to Lucky Smells Lumber Mill, where they encounter optimists, optometrists, and hypnosis.

"Optimist" is a word which here refers to a person, such as Phil, who thinks hopeful and pleasant thoughts about nearly everything. For instance, if an optimist had his left arm chewed off by an alligator, he might say, "Well, this isn't too bad. I don't have my left arm anymore, but at least nobody will ever ask me whether I am right-handed or left-handed," but most of us would say something more along the lines of "Aaaaah! My arm! My arm!"

Continued with this 4th one in the series. It is my least favourite of all the four. But still a good read. As the title indicated it is miserable indeed 😞 I like the team spirit of these kids.

I definitely think this one was the most dramatic of the series so far. The mill is definitely not a place I would ever want to visit.

1.5.20: I‘m enjoying the series, but I do find the story a little slow at times. Definitely feels catered to a much younger audience in terms of writing style, but the plot is good and I‘m curious to see how it all ends.

As I continue on my journey with A Series of Unfortunate Events, I do still look forward to reading more in this series, but I must say this was my least favorite this far.

The first three just has a bit more to the characters and storyline.

Obviously, it is all about the orphans and that horrid Count Olaf, but this one was more on the “scary” side than the others.

So overall not bad. Just not the best. Still would recommend.

Shley9225 A few years ago I tried to read this series and made it all the way until book 5, and this is the only one I can remember absolutely NOTHING from 5y
KristenDuck @Shley9225 right? It‘s just not a memorable one. 5y
OnlyYoo Yeah this one wasn‘t the best. I remember really liking book 7 though. Also the one with the boarding school. That might be 8? 5y

Book 21 of the year, finished March 7, audio.

Ugh. Usually I like listening to the author read their book but while Mr Snicket is a good author, he is a terrible narrator. His reading of Sir's parts were particularly painful.

As far as the book, eh? Nothing really stood out to me as particularly great or awful. It was there, I read it, onto the next.

I started reading these books after the Netflix series was announced. (I love NPH.) Show‘s been out a while and I‘ve yet to even watch one episode. This particular book was my least favorite so far, maybe because I listened to the audiobook and didn‘t really like taking in the story that way. Made my teeth hurt. The creepy harpsichord music did not help. Let me go back to the quick, fun reading of the physical books.

2. Thanks to Scribd, my kids and I are listening to the Series of Unfortunate Events every night at dinner.

4. I need to find a new one. Just finished Travelers - loved it!

Forgot to post about this! Just finished and loved it, although there was something about it that I felt had a different feel to the other books. Maybe it's that Klaus and Violet were well and truly hopeless, and pretty much swapped skills for necessity. Didn't really like that aspect of the story but the rest was good!

Whether it was Uncle Monty‘s library of reptile books, or Aunt Josephine‘s library of grammar books, or Justice Strauss‘s library of law books, or, best of all, their parents‘ library of all kinds of books - all burned up now, alas - libraries always made them feel a little bit better.

This was another fun installment. Things get weirder and weirder, and I do love that. These books are taking frustration to a whole new level, with the adult's incapability of actually protecting the Baudelaires from Count Olaf, and Count Olaf himself is definitely one of the best villains - he does have a thing for dressing up! I'm really curious to see what will happen next!

A Series of Unfortunate Events is #aneeyorekindofread because...well, don't the titles say enough?

But I also had to include Emma because although the book as a whole isn't Eeyore-like, Emma's dad is one of the most Eeyore-like characters I can think of: rather lovably and ridiculously pessimistic. He's particularly great in this BBC miniseries version (played by Michael Gambon).

So far, this book is my last favorite of the series. Count Olaf barely appears in this book, and I think that was the point. It forces the reader to focus more on the situation the children are in and to realize that not all guardians make suitable parents or want to take care of children or even know how. I hated their guardian in this book more than Olaf.
