I don't know how I've never seen this tag before. The above is from my review, when I read this 5 years ago.
“Never in my life have I had a teacher tell me to be quiet because I was talking to somebody in class! It was the best feeling in the world! I felt like the rest of the kids.“
This book is targeted at older elementary students and middle school students. I think that this would be great for students to read because they get a different perspective from kids their age that they may not understand how they are.
This book follows a girl named Melody who was born with cerebral palsy and cannot walk or talk and just struggles with going through school and not feeling as if she belongs because no one truly knows her. Everyone believes that because she cannot talk she has no thoughts, but that is the complete opposite- she is thinking up a storm! Once she finally gets her “talker“ she is able to finally communicate.
This is a book about the power of language suitable for 5th-6th grade students. The story is told through the perspective of the main character, Melody Brooks. Who is a 10-year-old girl that has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She can't walk or talk. In the book she gets integrated into mainstream classes with other kids, overcomes her disability, gets to play on a quiz team yet finds out how judgmental and mean other kids can be.
Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper is a realistic fictional novel for young adults. The narrative centers on the life of 11-year-old Melody Brooks, a child with cerebral palsy. The book delves into her inner monologue and her battles to prove her intelligence to others around her. When she is put in a special education class, she gets dissatisfied with her weak social skills. She soon has more opportunities to interact with people.
Review:
It is about a girl named Melody Brooks, who is 10 years old. She has cerebral palsy and can't walk or talk. She goes to school with other kids, overcomes her disability, gets to play on a quiz team, and gets bullied.
As a special education teacher I appreciate how this YA novel brings attention to how we treat people with disabilities. Although I didn't always feel the author did a great job of portraying 10 and 11 year olds, she brought light to how often neurodiverse people can be underestimated. I also liked how she highlighted how neurotypical people tend to talk about neurodiverse students like they're not even there--a major problem!!

“Eleven-year-old Melody is not like most people. She can‘t walk. She can‘t talk. She can‘t write. All because she has cerebral palsy. But she also has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She‘s the smartest kid in her whole school, but NO ONE knows it.” Draper writes a delicate story with just the right kind of pathos and joy—in the sequel, Melody has a new device that helps her communicate👇
This is one book I think everyone should read, even if it makes me ugly cry! I got it from the library when I first read it, but I took advantage of the scholastic book fair at my school to get my own copy, and the sequel!
This book is amazing! I understand why it has received so many awards and is recommended for fans of WONDER. Funny, touching and anger inducing.
I‘ve had this in my Kindle library since July of 2014! I was prompted to move on it when I saw that a long awaited sequel was released this month. Great on audio as well! Sequel tagged ⬇️. #middlegrade

Picked this for my next book for my Foundations of Literacy class. Professor gave us five excellent choices, but this one was calling me. I‘ve read about 20 pages (have to stop and go to work. Boo) and I‘m already loving Melody!
This is such a wonderful book about overcoming adversity, owning who you are, friendship, and so much more. Highly recommend this middle grade read. @megnews you might be interested in this.

This RF, New York Times Best Seller and multiple award winning book tells the story of Melody, a girl with cerebral palsy. Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory, but her teachers and doctors do not know how smart she is. Once Melody finds her voice, will she also find acceptance? The novel is a great choice for a LC. The Read Write Think website gives a deeper insight into literature circles.
This RF, LC New York Times Best Seller is a wonderful book for students to read. This story includes themes about ableism, hope and adventure. Melody wants to show the world how smart and amazing she is, but she is barred by her inability to walk or talk due to cerebral palsy. This wonderful story follows her journey to show the world her authentic self despite the limitations she has due to her disability. Get your tissues ready!. #UCFLAE3414SP21
Sharon M. Draper‘s New York Times best seller book, Out of my Mind, is truly unbelievable. The RF story of Melody is one of my most favorites since I was in elementary school. Out of my Mind is about a girl who gets the technology to finally be able to say what she has been thinking this whole time! This book would be great for LC, and can engage students to think in ways they haven‘t before. #ucflae3414sp21
Spending our 2nd to last day of summer vacation at the Jersey shore. It is a gorgeous day. #summervacation #summerreading #beachread
Wow! This book is amazing and teaches such valuable lessons for all-- we all have our setbacks and aspects of ourselves that aren't perfect. It's so important to see that people with disabilities may have one aspect of their body that does not work properly, but that does not mean they are not intellectual beings with wants, thoughts, and needs like all individuals. Draper points out that while life might not always be fair, it is not all bad!
Wow! A tear-Jerking RF novel, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, revolves around an 11 year old girl by the name of Melody. Melody is not your average girl in grade 5. She has a disability. Her disability is called Cerebral Palsy, and this causes Melody to have muscle spasms, lack of control of her body and the inability to walk. #UCFLAE3414SU20
This RF book pacts a powerful punch. I would use this book for IR and also LC. Because if its powerful message I would love to see students first reaction what what they learned from the book through IR and come together to do LC at different times during the reading. The author is a two-time Coretta Scott King Award Winner, and this book will warm the hearts of students and adults.

“Out of my mind!” is a RF book by Sharron Draper.
It was on the New York Best Seller List for almost two years and received the Josette Frank Award. This is a great LC book; it encourages students to have thoughtful discussions and to develop a love for reading. After reading the first few chapters, I fell in love with Melody. Melody has cerebralpalsy, but through her struggles she wishes to communicate her thoughts and feelings.#ucflae3414su20
This book was 100% a lovely read. It made me reconsider some of my own actions and beliefs towards those who are differently-abled. I feel like everyone could benefit from this fantastic book. One thing I will note, is that I liked how Draper purposefully left out racial descriptors for Melody and all the characters so that everyone can empathize a little bit better. Definitely recommend!
I loved this book a lot. It had such a great and unique way to tell this story. It is a great read for those who need help with acceptance and over all just a great book. It really triggers emotions. It is a realistic fiction novel and a New York Times best seller. I would use the Literature circle teaching strategy because it‘s such a great novel and would be great for triggering conversation and learning
This RF novel is a MUST READ, it was the NY Times Best Seller for almost two years, and I understand why! Out of my Mind is based off the main character, Melody, whom has Cerebral Palsy. While everyone thinks she stupid, she‘s smarter than them all, but she isn‘t able to express that until she has her new—high tech—computer that helps her finally communicate just a little. I think this book would be great in a LC in the classroom. #UCFLAE3414SP20
This book would be good for SR. It can help students see the world from a different perspective and gain a better understanding for those who are disabled. The struggles the young MC goes through for acceptance can also be relatable for students. Resource: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/kriscia-cabral/teaching-out-my-mi...
I would use ESOL strategy 6. I would ask frequent comprehension questions to make sure students understand...
“When I sleep, I dream. And in my dreams I can do anything... When I wake up in the morning, it‘s always sort of a letdown as reality hits me.”
Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper is a RF book that pulls at the heart strings. The story is about 11 year old Melody with Cerebral palsy and overcoming the struggles in her life. This book would be great for LC in the class as students can read an amazing #1 NY times best seller. This book is great for UDL 3.2 highlighting critical features and ESOL 4, by incorporating students prior knowledge of cerebral palsy. #ucflae3414sp20
This RF book is a strong read for LC. Which is why I needed my reading buddy with me(: Throughout the story you learn about an 11 year old girl battling to show the world that she herself is like everyone else. Except she is not able to talk or walk. This book won the Josette Frank Award.
Eight 5th graders unanimously recommended this book to me. This is a great middle grade novel about a 5th grade girls named Melody who has cerebral palsy. She is bright, gifted with a photographic memory, and no one knows because she needs assistance to eat, speak, move - until she gets a meditalker and qualifies for the school quizbowl team. The book ends not so sweetly but Melody is winning throughout.
F and LC book. This book can open conversations about discrimination, differences, respect, courage, bullying, feelings, judgment, and so on. The theme of the book is Empowerment. It is the story of Melody, a brilliant 10-year-old girl, trap in her own body, wanting to say and express so many things but unable to do it. It is heartbreaking, but at the same time, it inspires greatness. She never gave up and found a way to be heard.

Out of my mind is a great book, it talks about a girl, Melody brooks who has a disease where it paralyzes her legs and she can only move several parts of her body. She is a very intelligent person despite her limits, but for her she doesn't think she's any different from other people.
Date started: 10/15/16 re read:10/22/19
Date ended: 11/1/16
Why I chose it: It talks about many aspects of life and even if you have limits, you can still do more.
Written by Sharon M Draper, this RF book follows that life of and 11 years old with Cerebal Palsy names Melody Brooks. This book coming from Melody's perspective, you get to feel what it's like to have all these words and thoughts in your head, yet you can‘t speak! This is a great book for IR! Scholastic has a great resource for this book as well! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/kriscia-cabral/teaching-out-my-mi... #ucflae3414f19
RF novel, Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper follows the story of an 11 year old girl named Melody Brooks who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Doing everything possible to live a normal lifestyle, Melody is on quest to fight to get her wishes despite her inability to communicate or move. This book would be best in a LC as students understand the importance of looking through a separate individual‘s “window.” #UCFLAE3414F19
Out of My Mind is a RF by Sharon M. Draper. It won multiple awards, some being Bank Street Best Book of the Year, Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award, and ILA Young Adult Choices. It‘s such an inspirational story about a 5th grade student named Melody who has cerebral palsy. She can‘t walk or talk but she‘s one of the most brilliant kids in her class. Everyone looks at her different because she‘s “disabled” except for her family, Mrs. V, and Catherine.
Out of my mind is a great novel if you enjoy realistic fiction. It is written by Sharon M Draper and has won the Coretta Scott King award. This story gives you great insight into the mind of a child who cannot speak, write, or walk. It would be a great story to use as a LC or even IR.
