Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it’s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.
More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.
Their only chance at survival is an elite rescue team on the surface led by professional diver Chris Kent—Shannon’s mother and Will’s soon-to-be ex-wife—who must work together with Will to find a way to save their daughter and rescue the passengers from the sealed airplane, which is now teetering on the edge of an undersea cliff.
There’s not much time.
There’s even less air.
With devastating emotional power and heart-stopping suspense, Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family’s desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them—against impossible odds.
Flight attendant turned New York Times bestselling author T. J. Newman—whose first book Falling was an instant #1 national bestseller and the biggest thriller debut of 2021—returns for her second book, an edge-of-your-seat thriller about a commercial jetliner that crashes into the ocean, and sinks to the bottom with passengers trapped inside, and the extraordinary rescue operation to save them.

Your basic disaster story. A plane goes down in the ocean, trapping some survivors 200 feet under water. A rescue plan gets underway. Plenty of cliches and dramatic moments. Would probably be good as a movie. Entertaining enough.

I just read the last of Newman‘s disaster stories and couldn‘t resist looping back for the 2nd installment. This was a fun ride, too, with all the characters one needs for a good disaster story. It‘s like ohhhh, this one‘s the ass. This one‘s not gonna make it to the end. This is the outsider that knows just how to save the day. You gotta have ‘em🤣

bthegood I love your summary of the characters needed for a disaster story - it is perfect!! 🙂 2mo

A plane crashes, survivors are trapped in it, it sinks into the ocean, where IT LANDS ON THE VERY EDGE OF A SEA CLIFF. With barely any oxygen left. Goodness me, despite being fiction, this is as claustrophobic and terrifying as it sounds, I could barely breathe. I survived it, but was on high alert for every one of the 287 pages and now need a lie down. If you like that vibe, definitely read it, it‘s faced paced and well written.

My favorite #12Booksof2023 from July was definitely the most fast-paced thing I‘ve read all year. I‘m not sure I breathed properly at all while I was reading it. I remember loving Newman‘s previous book (Falling) too. Her stories are horrifying, but I just can‘t look away.

Don‘t tell anybody, but I‘m a disaster movie junkie. Love ‘em all (except Titanic, THAT was just silly) Well, this book is just like a soul satisfying disaster flick. It checks all the boxes: lovable characters trapped together with interesting back-stories, engineer who keeps folk safe with his knowledge, lovely older couple, two charming kids, horrible a** hole, brave female captain, valiant rescuers, etc. Finished at 2AM. Just plain, fun read!

marleed I‘m right there with you on disaster movies! 12mo

The definition of suspense. Even better than her first book. This was filled with tension from the first page. A plane crashes in the Pacific six minutes after take off. An engine explodes, the ocean is on fire, the plane floods and sinks, with 12 passengers trapped inside. 5⭐️

In her first book she was falling and now she is drowning. Suspense from the first page, read this by a pool or by the ocean but not on the plane! Good read🫣, learn to swim!:)🏊‍♀️

I almost read this before a recent flight but decided against it…glad I did!

T.J. Newman wastes no time in this high octane thriller and follow up to “Falling”, about a commercial airliner that ditches in the Pacific Ocean.

You‘ll want to finish this page turner in one sitting.

Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside. Their fate depends on the elite rescue team above water and their own will to survive. It brought on all the Poseidon Adventure feels! Fun fast paced thriller with a tad bit of family drama. 4 stars.

Must read of you like suspense. First time in a while I couldn‘t put a book down snd finished in 2 days. Suspenseful but also touching and really enjoyed all of the characters. Now I can‘t wait to read Falling!

From this nail-biting first paragraph to the very end the tension in this story does not let up. The author did a great job of describing everything, making you really feel like you are there with the characters (which, for those in the plane, was terrifying for me as I‘m claustrophobic 😨). Somehow it‘s also a very character-driven story and you really start to care about these people and all they‘ve been through. Great summer read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

candc320 I should also say that, the reason I didn‘t give it 5 🌟, is because of the ambiguity and rushed feeling of both the beginning and the end. I had a lot of questions about how things started and how we got to the very ending that were never addressed. A lot of “why” questioned left unanswered. 1y

This was SO fantastic. I liked it even more than her debut (Falling) which I gave 5/5⭐️.

This is super intense and suspenseful from the very first paragraph, a true white-knuckle read. It never slowed down at any point. Several times, I had to make myself intentionally read a little bit slower-I felt hungry for what happened next the entire way thru. A great, great thrill ride. Just a lot of fun to read.

A very high pick.

Bklover Totally agree 😁 1y

Bk16 of my #BookMail is the 2nd thriller from the flight attendant turned author. Another plane based edge of your seat story, it‘s about a plane that‘s crashed into the ocean. Six minutes after take off Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During evacuation, the engine explodes & it drops to the ocean floor, taking 12 passengers with it. An extraordinary rescue operation is then undertaken to save them before the air runs out.✈️

#StoryGraph: fiction thriller dark tense • 4.5 Stars

I‘ve been reading a lot of horror lately, but no demon, vampire, or any unworldly creature is scarier to me than… Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it‘s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.

that being said, I read this in one day. When I woke up at 4 (cuz cats) rather than returning to sleep, I wondered: what‘s happening underwater now? And I had to continue. 😝 #catsoflitsy

Ok I liked it, BUT I found myself skimming portions and getting a tad overwhelmed by the constant assault of awful things that could go wrong. I prefer Falling over this one, and I realized it‘s because the best part of that book for me was the internal struggle of the pilot to weigh options and decide what to do. That wasn‘t in this book; it was straight action, suspense, and wondering if they‘ll survive or not. Great for plot-driven readers!

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m about 120 pages in, I‘m enjoying it but I‘ll forget the whole story most likely in 6 months. I liked Falling also and you‘re right on with your assessment. But I also forgot I had even read that one and got it out of the library again….lol…I think I read it about 2 years ago. 2y

I read her first book, FALLING, last year and it was one of my favorites of the year. Go grab this one, but NOT before a vacation where you have to fly ;)

4½⭐

Read this if you like:

- all the points above⬆
- very little character development (although the mom, dad, and daughter are fairly developed)
- a plane crash story that feels well researched
- a quick listen

Well, the first chapter did two things. Reminded me of FA training and what the commands where we memorized if God forbid we were in this kinda situation and two sucked me into the drama. One sitting read here.

Once you read the first chapter of this book, you will find it nearly impossible to put it down. How many of the passengers will survive? And what about the rescuers? How many of them will die in their attempts to save those who are trapped? It will leave you exhausted.

After having read Falling, knew I had to read this! Same great tension and pacing as a plane goes down soon after ascent…into the water! Will and young daughter, Shannon are aboard and terrified but soon-to-be ex, Chris (certified industrial diver) helps by doing what she can. Just avoid reading this on a flight!😱

After having loved “Falling“ I was thrilled to get my hands on this one, thank you NetGalley. It is an intense read from start to finish and while it was not quite as good as “Falling“, it was still very good. I loved the mix of characters and the fact that many of those were smart females. The story includes a lot of airplane and science tech, but not so much as to slow the pacing. I am thrilled to know both books will be made into movies. 4.5/5

Pure entertainment, you will be sitting at the edge of your seats for this one ..completely bingeable but probably won‘t recommend to read this one on the plane! A plane crash causing the plane to the bottom of the ocean and a very ambitious rescue plan with no room for a single misstep. Would love this as a movie !
