Two sisters navigate the thrilling, euphoric early days of California surf culture in this dazzling saga of ambition, sacrifice, and the tangled ties between mothers and daughters from the New York Times bestselling author of The Aviator's Wife. "A shimmering rendering . . . pairs the surf culture of the Beach Boys with the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll of Daisy Jones & The Six."--Entertainment Weekly ("Best Books of the Summer") Southern California, 1960s: endless sunny days surfing in Malibu, followed by glittering neon nights at Whisky a Go Go. In an era when women are expected to be housewives, Carol Donnelly breaks the mold as a legendary female surfer struggling to compete in a male-dominated sport--and her daughters, Mindy and Ginger, bear the weight of Carol's unconventional lifestyle. The Donnelly sisters grow up enduring their mother's absence--physically, when she's at the beach, and emotionally, the rare times she's at home. To escape questions about Carol's whereabouts--and to chase her elusive affection--they cut school to spend their days in the surf. From her first time on a board, Mindy is a natural, but Ginger, two years younger, feels out of place in the water. As they grow up and their lives diverge, Mindy and Ginger's relationship ebbs and flows. Mindy finds herself swept up in celebrity, complete with beachside love affairs, parties at the Playboy Club, and a USO tour in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Ginger, desperate for a community of her own, is tugged into the dangerous counterculture of drugs and cults. But through it all, their sense of duty to each other survives, as the girls are forever connected by the emotional damage they carry from their unorthodox childhood. A gripping, emotional story set at a time when mothers were expected to be Donna Reed, not Gidget, California Golden is an unforgettable novel about three women living in a society that was shifting as tempestuously as the breaking waves.

10-31-23: My 93rd finished book of 2023! I have to be honest, not one of these characters, especially the 3 main Donnelly women, are likable. Mindy and Ginger are the daughters of Carol, a woman who would rather surf then raise her girls. Spanning from the 50s through the 60s, from the sunny Beach Boy vibes to the turbulent Vietnam war, Mindy, Ginger and Carol go their separate ways but always have the surf as their common denominator.

Transporting readers to sunny 1960s California and Hawaii, this book is steeped in surf culture and complicated mother-daughter-sister dynamics. It‘s a difficult journey for these characters, and while I could empathize with their situations, I struggled to fully connect. #Aardvark #AardvarkBookClub

The ever-growing Madagascar Dragon Tree next to my reading chair had a baby limb pop out! Guess he likes my CO2!

Benjamin tells the story of a mother who feels trapped by 1950s expectations of motherhood and escapes into surfing. Her two daughters deal with abandonment issues while finding their way into the waves. One finds commercial success while the other treads a more dangerous path. Nice summer read that isn‘t too fluffy.

marleed What a cool tree! 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Coming of age story of two daughters of a surf champion mom in the mid-twentieth century. The surf culture setting was interesting, and the constraints put on women were stifling and infuriating. I found at least half of the characters more maddening than sympathetic, but still an interesting book.

I really enjoyed this coming of age story of two sisters , set in 1960‘s Southern California amongst the surf culture. It‘s also about motherhood, societal expectations and being a woman during a pivotal time in history. Great narration. Perfect summer listen 🎧❤️🏄🏼‍♀️ Devoured in one day 🥰 #ISpyBingo #Surfboard

I was 5 for 5 in my early #Aardvark predictions! ?

I ended up going with these three... because my TBR is not long enough as it is (being sarcastic, obvy), and my new house is done FINALLY so one of my first projects will be transforming the "den" into my home library, giving me a free pass (in my head) to treat myself to ALL THE BOOKS I WANT ?

JenReadsAlot That's exciting! 1y
TheBookgeekFrau There's Nothing more exciting than creating the home library! Can't wait to see pix 🤩 1y

swishandflick @JenReadsAlot @TheBookgeekFrau @Megabooks I'm SO EXCITED. I've got a carpenter coming to give me a quote on putting built-ins along a huge wall, all the way up to my 9' ceilings. They're gonna be a dark wood grain, and the wall behind will be deep blue (going for a bit of a "Ravenclaw common room" vibe, haha). There's an electric fireplace, and I ordered a deep cozy reading sofa for that room. Definitely the home project I'm most stoked for! 1y
Cinfhen Great job with those predictions!!!!! 1y
JenReadsAlot Let me know if you need anyone to take care of that room for you! Lol 1y
Amor4Libros Your future library sounds dreamy!! I have an ARC of California Golden, it looks good 🙂 1y

This is a fun novel about the surf scene (mostly CA) in the 50s and 60s. The "soundtrack" is excellent. Two girls take up surfing basically to keep their mother's attention. There are beach movies, war, cults and other aspects of the culture from that time period. I thought it was really well done.

Fascinating look at the 60‘s through the eyes of sisters, Mindy and Ginger who grow up surfing in mom‘s shadow, gaining stardom, joining communes, and falling in love (and those are just the nice things)! So many things I enjoyed: Gidget, The Monkees, Timothy Leary references…let‘s just say this book is BITCHIN‘! (Ok, I‘m old)🤪
